Following on from this:

What are everyones guess.

Note:  This is what you expect, not what you want. (ie like gambling against yoru favourite team because you are postive they will lose (that you you at least get some satisfaction from their defeat)).

I thought about having a sweepstake but with only 11 plaecs avaliable, thought it would fill up to fast.

My opinion is they could probably afford up to 10c.  However, Jons post seems to be conditioning us into the risks they fact and therefore my vote was only 5c.

I guessed 3c - a 10% raise.
It'd be nice to get 20%, but this seems too high to me.

Not sure if you are aware as you have only started recently but this time last year they gave a rise of 5c from 20c to 25c.  I think before that it had always been 20c.

Does that change your mind?

They also increased prices to buyers by about 25% recently.

either 5c to 30c per download or 8c to 33c per download.

8c would be nice.  123rf now have a guaranteed 30c and it comes out at 33-35 each month.

Any increase will put pressure on IS and DT.

Umm..not on IS. IS was the one that raised prices first and that increased commissions per download a lot more than any commission increase SS is considering. It is IS's actions that allowed SS to raise prices, not the other way around.

and DT just raised there prices. But their subscriptions are still .25c.

If they raise it to .33c or something even higher I can see a flock of new photographers joining who didn't before because they thought .25c was a rip off.

Didn't the subscription fee go up from $189 to $199 (for a single month)?
I guessed a 5% increase because this reflects the subscription fee increase.

So a 1 cent increase?

SS is the first site I started with and the most consistent site for me as well. Any Increment would be nice and I hope it will be a minimum of 5c to raise it to 30c.

However do note that SS is the only site so far whereby if the subscriber download up to their max limit daily(which they willing to take the risk that it seldom happen) they will be in the RED.

750 images at 30c per commission. That will give them a -ve $25.

I'll be shocked sh*tless if they raise it anything other than 5 cents, like they did last year. If it's only 1 penny, a lot of people are going to be very disappointed.

Incorrect.

The monthly price increased from $159 to $199, or about 25%.  Other subscriptions (quarterly, yearly, etc) increased about 25% as well.

Oh.

We should see a 20% raise then.

Can I change my vote to 5c?

Percentages don't work properly on calculations like this.  I look at it this way:

The increase for subscribers is $40.  If every subscriber downloads the maximum of 750 per month the 'income' to SS is (750 x 25c = 5.3c per image).  So on this basis SS could increase commission payments by 5c and retain a small operating profit increase of 0.3c per image.

However, the bet SS is making is that most subscribers won't achieve their maximum download limit.  Let's assume that the average subscriber downloads only half the maximum ie 375 images per month.  Then the 'income' to SS has increased by 10.6c per image.  On this basis SS could easily afford 5c extra per image or even 8c extra taking the download payment to 33c and still retain increased operating profits.

Of course SS as a start up business will have planned to book operating losses in the early years with profits to come later.  It may have already reached the 'need profits' stage.

But it seems that a 5c increase is affordable, with 8c a possibility if SS wants to send an important message.  It all depends on the subscriber usage numbers which of course only SS knows.

Don't forget a good volume of their income comes from those submitters ( probably around 20-30,000) who may have accumulated $ 50 in their accounts and may never reach minimum payout. regards, Grizzlybear

I think John was a bit of a twit for even suggesting a payrise was coming, I would have notified people of what it was when I knew, not beforehand. It would stop all this pointless speculation and probably upset members when the realise that the payrise will be another crapo 5 cents and that they are still being ripped off.

I'll take that crapo 5 cents and the check I receive every month from SS. Jon is one of the nicest men I know of in this business. He did me a great service the first year I was with SS that he didn't have to do and for that I will remain a loyal contributor.

One thing I was very surprized about was according to that posting at SS the entire operation is based in Manhattan 25 staff and two offices. Quite a surprize with globalization with most other sites having their workforce spread out around the globe usually in places with lower rents and wage costs. I guess very few subscribers are DLing anything like 750/month to support some of the highest overheads in the business.

Though one question is what are they charging clients for extended licences the going rate is somewhere between $50 and $100 and at SS we only get $20 maybe this is how they support their business model.

How do people extended licence sales compare at SS most of mine are at DT or FT.

I would image the payrise will be between 1-5c hopefully nearer 5c.

Those who though 5c (as I did) were partially right.  It was a 20% increase to 30c but only if you have total sales of over $500.

I just joined about 10 days ago with a small portfolio and am still $461.68 away from the goal  :'(
I guess that means finally making the investment in the lighting equipment and hope it pays off.

Anyway, it's good to have a goal - however ambitious it might be.

At least I think the $500 goal is achievable in SS and definitely something to work towards for those who have yet to reach $500

Those that continue to work and upload will make $500 a lot quicker than you think. I think the threshhold was to avoid racking up the AP account on people that have never reached the 1st payout and probably won't.

Just my .05 worth

Ok, to keep things organized I will lock this thread since we now know what the raise is, and to move the conversation over to the thread started about the announcement
