Ok, I have been chatting a bit with Adorama and we have come up with a 'beta' solution for giving / getting a deal.  Beta because things are not necessarily finalized in how things will work in the long term, but this is how it will work for now at least.

Adorama has agreed to give a discount (amount unknown as of yet) to microstockgroup members.  To keep the discount somewhat under control (ie - not giving the discount to everyone on the www), it is going to work this way.  I will give a list of email addresses of everyone who is interested in the deal with Adorama, and then they will send out emails with a promotional code.  I cannot just send the entire MSG email list as this would be breaking privacy ethics of the members here, so the only way you are going to get a promotional code is to go into
PROFILE > Forum Profile Information
and looking at the very bottom for the Adorama 'opt in' check box.  Here is a quick link to your profile
http://www.microstockgroup.com/index.php?action=profile;sa=forumProfile

feedback and other thoughts are welcome and more details will hopefully be finalized in the next couple days.

edit - things are now confirmed

If you want to get in on the deal you must be 'opted in' before October 27th
An email will go out (from Adorama) which will contain a coupon giving you a % discount on any purchase over $200 with the max discount of $100.  The coupon will be valid for 30 days.

The discount will be
5% for Premium (paid members) and Diamond Members (those with over 1000 posts)
3% for all other members.

Your membership status will be determined by it's status on October 27th when I send the email list to Adorama.

The deal is sort of a 'one time' deal, but there is a definite possibility of future deals of this one goes well.

And for anyone who missed it before - to opt in, go to...

Well, this IS an interesting turn of events.

NAPP members have a deal with the major Adorama competition.
I am hoping that Adorama can best the other 'deal' as is not all that spectacular.

Time will tell  ;D

I'm in and I hope like the others it's a bit better than the NAPP/B&H discount.  Free shipping is nice, but it's nothing to write home about.

I anxiously await the news....   I just ordered 3 Pocket Wizards on Friday, but today I was looking for a module for my flash meter.  http://www.adorama.com/SKT.html?searchinfo=RT-32%20%09&item_no=1

They are $49 at Adorama. and $149 in Canada.  My guy here is giving me $20 off, bringing it to $129.

Adorama's site says "free shipping on this item.".  Shipping is actually $33 to Canada.  If I add Canadian exchange and duties, it brings the Adorama module to about $100 Cdn, so I just asked my guy to bring it in for the $29 difference and I'll have it in 2 days.

Now that our dollars are close, shipping is usually the deciding factor if I buy Canadian or from B&H or Adorama.  $33 on a tiny little module that *without packaging* takes up less than a square inch of space seems a little impractical to me.   (I know, I know, it's not us.. it's UPS.)

But... I was going to buy a SB-900 this month too.  I guess I'll  hold off on this purchase to see how attractive the Adorama details are.

Great news. I hope some of those deals involve reduced shipping. The ridiculous shipping rates for overseas purchases ($60 for 1 CF card as an example) was the only thing stopping me from buying off them.

What if one will be in NY during, oh, I don't know, maybe the largest photography exhibition in the world, PhotoPlus Expo, which finishes on October 25, and they leave NY on, let's just say, October 26.  Wouldn't that be a little frustrating?

Might have to head down the street to B&H!  ;)

The trip to B&H is definitely worth it ... it's quite the store!

You need to be aware that it's run/owned by Hassidic Jews, and they strictly adhere to established customs/traditions/holidays. To wit:

I have been a customer of B&H for about 20 years (back when they were down the block from Adorama).  IMO, B&H and Adorama are some of the classiest businesses out there.

Unfortunately, I have never been to the new B&H store.  I hear that it is pretty impressive.

yes, they ship to Europe and as far as I can tell they also accept paypal, which is good for european microstock photographers because they dont have to get they money changed at the poor paypal exchange rate.

I suppose it depends on where ou live, but i know buying in the states, and paying shipping is a lot cheaper for me than buying in Norway.

Have found out the answer to this...

Your purchase is locked in at the time you go through the checkout so even if the item is back ordered you will still receive the discount.

You need to be aware that it's run/owned by Hassidic Jews, and they strictly adhere to established customs/traditions/holidays.

You can't even shop online with them during Sabbath.

Some history background: they have originally come to Brazil with the Dutch that settled in the Northeast in the 18th century (the oldest synagogue in the Americas is in Brazil, now a Jewish museum), then they moved to "New Amsterdam" a few years later.  Hadn't they moved, we would have B&H here in Brazil.  ;D

I pre ordered the 5dII a couple of weeks ago. Has anyone else who pre ordered been asked to fax a copy of their credit card statement? I have not faxed it yet because I am not very happy about it. Is this normal business practice in the US? I have never been asked to do this before.

Helen:

No, I haven't.  I used to frequent your store (and B&H) when I lived in the city (which was over 15 years ago).  I have since moved far away from the city and have not had a chance to see the new stores.  I'm glad to see that the both of you are growing, you both deserve it.

looks like there will be delay in expected arrival time, which was early nov,
quoted from Helen's post on canonrumors.com

I apologize for any confusion or inconvenience that may have been caused.
At Adorama we were initially informed - by Canon - that delivery was expected 27th October, and based our subsequent information to customers on this.

I am unable to comment upon what information was given to other retailers at any point during the past months.

However, as you are all now aware, Canon revised these estimates.

I apologize for not responding earlier - somehow I missed your posting. I hope that by now you have received your order, however, I wanted to explain: if you are placing a first time order with Adorama, and the delivery address you request is not the same as the address to which your card is registered, we are required by our banks to request additional verification for security purposes. This protects Adorama, the bank - and most importantly, genuine customers from potential fraudulent transactions from being carried out on a customer's card.

We do appreciate the inconvenience - and sadly, you may begin to see more merchants having to adopt the same or similar procedures as time goes on.

If there is still a delay with processing your order, please get in touch with me, with your order number: [email protected]

Sincerely

Hi Helen,

Thanks for replying. The delivery address is the same as my credit card address, that is why I am so puzzled. Fred also asked for a copy of my credit card, but there is no way I am transmitting that. I have sent my credit card details, but have heard no more.
I hope I am going to get a camera eventually!

This sounds like you physically have coupons (in your hand) and will be mailing them out, but my understanding was that we would receive an email with a promotional/discount code.  Am I misunderstanding something?

Thanks Leaf!

Just a quick question for Helen.

What happens with people ordering from Greece, are we allowed to order from the international site or do we have to  order from adorama.gr?  I cannot find Greece in the drop down menu in the international site. The reason i'm asking is that i'm looking at a lens and there is a 200$ difference in the price.

They have been having some problems with this so you have to email the adorama contact directly after you make your purchase.  Send me an PM and I will give out the email address.

I ordered some stuff on the 25th so that it would get here before I took off in December, no problems with the discount (except I had to order something else to kick it over 200$ - but that is fine, another toy to play with). The package got here the 26th! wow, nice surprise.

on a second note on Adorama, a friend ordered something and later that day the price was lowered and after she called, they switched her to the lower price. Nice. It sure beats some of those fly by night bait and switch places.

what are the chances of doing another of these, now that it about 6 months later (and I'm in the process of changing systems) ??

(or does anyone know any working discount codes for b&h or adorama)
