Does anyone know if it is possible to convert images into vector graphics?

yeah you can do it with adobe illustrator.

unless the image is very simple, they don't turn out very well, and it is still a lot of work if you want to submit them as stock.

Thanx leaf, so if the image needs to be more simple, is there a filter in Photoshop which makes it more simple? For example that all yellow tones become one yellow tone, so in the end that you have only lets say 5-10 colours..

I believe that CorelDraw will also automatically convert images from raster to vector.  It also seems to have a way of merging colors (to reduce color variations).
