Hi everybody

I'm a programmer and microstocker at the same time and today I'm pleased to present my piece of free and open source software. It's named Xpiks (Cross-platform Image Keywoarding Software) - keywording and uploading tool for microstock photographers and illustrators. It was written from scratch with aim to make it more usefull, convenient and quicker than existing tools.

Program is available for OS X, Windows and Linux.

Main features:

  • keywording capabilities as well as setting additional XMP/IPTC metadata (title, description, author)
  • uploading images to Stock Agencies' FTP hosts (keeping encrypted list of credentials)
  • keywords suggestion based on Shutterstock API or local library
  • search through loaded images by any metadata (keywords, description, title)
  • ability to upload vector (eps/ai) files with images with same name (useful for illustrators)
  • automatically zip vectors and previews if needed
  • checks for potential problems before upload (insufficient resolution, missing metadata etc.)
  • spell checking

Can you use this application to 'stamp' metadata like title, description and keywords back into the exif/iptc fields of the image itself? When I save the image from within Xpiks it puts a .xpks file next to it - presumably this is some kind of sidecar file that contains the metadata I added?

Hi

.xpks file is just the backup. Title, description and keywords are written to the exif/iptc fields of the image itself. Backup is useful if you made some edits and then somehow exited the program without saving or blackout or etc. Afterwards you can restore everything from the backup.

You can always turn off/on creation of the backups in Settings ->  Behavior -> Create backups for items

I love your program. It took me a little bit of time to realize I didn't have to save separate backups of every file, but it's been smooth sailing since then.

I love this program. I am having an issue with the latest release. It loads fine, and imports photos fine, but when I go to the Upload screen and then click Start Upload, I'm getting a weird error, and the uploads do not go forward:

"The program can't start because VCRUNTIME140.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

Hi. Thanks for ringing the bell. Can you please go to downloads and download Xpiks again? I've updated zip archive. It should have name Xpiks-v1.1.zip. Looking forward to hearing from you

There's a new bugfix release available. It should have reached you via auto update. Now importing/exporting of files takes literaly 10 times less time than before.

What exactly about vectors?

Xpiks can upload them and zip if necessary (if you will tick the box). What else?

This is very strange since I have around 80 users on Win10 at the moment and none of them experienced such a disaster. I'm looking forward to receiving a log from you so I can investigate it.

"on Windows they should be at C:/Users/USERNAME/AppData/Roaming/Xpiks/ directory"

When Xpiks is launched it writes to logfile. Doesn't matter about installation files.
if your username is cgartist on your computer, than please take a look at

C:\Users\cgargist\AppData\Roaming\Xpiks

Also you can just type '%APPDATA%\Xpiks' (without quotes) in your explorer path edit line

cgartist, if there's no crash window present how would you know if it's a "crash"? Is there a Windows crash window? (Like "Application Xpiks stopped working. Check the solution online blah-blah-blah"?) If there is one, it contains some useful information - I would appreciate if you would grab it and send me.

The log file you pasted here looks like absolutely healthy. Maybe you accidentaly clicked "Disagree" and Xpiks just closed?

And please - send logs and bugs-related stuff to the Support forum on the xpiks website http://ribtoks.github.io/xpiks/support/. Maybe it will be useful for other users as well.

Never run it as admin. It's should be working just fine from your default user account. If there's no crash from Xpiks than it's very strange.

There's a possibility that you have third-party software (antivirus, firewall etc.) which closes/quarantines Xpiks, because Xpiks closes itself only if you disagree to the Terms and Conditions (and in case of crash, of course, but then you will get at least Windows standard crash window). So you can check your antivirus/firewall if it blocked Xpiks.

Yes I have avast antivirus and when I run Xpiks it scans the software automatically and then it closes. I think you are correct, this is some compatibility issue with my antivirus.

happy to see this one coming out: finally a nice one!! Currently working with several command line tools (which is about okay) and online "solutions" (which is not). It's great to see that we do not have to bend over backward to Adobe and similar outfits (or run emulator stuff etc) just in order to make keywording and EXIF manipulation etc a tat easier.

Thanks for you work, will check it out as soon as I fixed a bunch of dependencies on Debian/GNU Linux (Linux Mint), details attached as footer below (general update didn't fix it and didn't touch the "old" libQT packages).

Hi Cliff

You're free to take a look at Debian's package specs https://github.com/Ribtoks/xpiks/tree/master/src/xpiks-qt/debian. What distro are you using?

If you will fail with satisfying all the dependencies, you can always try to build Xpiks alone (debian package anyway is a few bugfix releases outdated).

Thanks a lot for sharing this software with us. Really a useful tool.

Some bugs(?)
- Cannot always detect spelling errors in keyword list. Probably it happens when a set a keywords are copied from one image to another (not sure).
- Replace option in spelling correction tool doesn't work properly for keyword list. I had a correct spelling keyword (First I didn't notice that correct one is there) and wrong one in the list. I selected to replace wrong one with the correct one select from suggestion list. However, it didn't remove the wrong one from the list.

Some suggestions:
- Display some of the image details below the thumbnail, such as the date taken. Those data are useful when editing editorial images
- Enable full preview option of images (or an option to open the original file from the disk.). This is useful when we need to seem more detailed view of images.
- Enable bulk edit of the images (select multiple images and edit them at once).
- Show the number of characters in the title (Some agencies, such as SS, has limitations on that. Therefore, it's useful to know the number of characters.)

Hello.

Thanks for the suggestions and bugs descriptions.

1. Bulk edit is already implemented! Select multiple images and press "Edit" button.
2. Full view of the image is implemented as well. First of all there's a "larger" view if you double-click on the image or click "Edit" under keywords. Also true full view is available if you click on the Image title under the image preview. There's a 100% view button.
3. I will add "Date taken" field to the preview. Thanks for the suggestion!
4. Regarding the number of characters, it's not displayed anywhere, but if you will exceed max number of characters, you will get a warning from Xpiks before upload.

Regarding bugs.
1. About the "unable to replace" bug. You cannot edit a keyword to an existing one. If you have "keyword1" and "keyword2", you cannot edit "keyword2" so you will receive two "keyword1"s. So if you have a correct keyword and the one with error it fails to replace the one with error to the correct one because it's already there.
I know it's not obvious at all, but I'm thinking of how to notify user in the most friendly way about it. It will be fixed with the next releases.

2. It can detect wrong spelling. It's just not always submitted for spellchecking (will be fixed soon). To force spellcheck, just simply Select All items and press Tools->Check spelling.

Thanks for your reply. I definitely haven't fully explored all of its functionalities.

4. Regarding the number of characters, it's not displayed anywhere, but if you will exceed max number of characters, you will get a warning from Xpiks before upload.

What is the max number of characters in current settings? (In SS, it's 200)

So if you have a correct keyword and the one with error it fails to replace the one with error to the correct one because it's already there.
Yes, but it doesn't remove the wrong one. It's great if it removes the wrong one while keeping only the correct one.

One more suggestion:
- Add real-time word suggestion function (like in SS). While typing a keyword, the program should be able to suggest list of possible words and a user should be able to pick one from that. (please check the attachment)

Xpiks is already really good. I hope my suggestions will help make Xpiks even better. Thanks again.

Thanks for your reply. I definitely haven't fully explored all of its functionalities.

I guess you should explore the first post in this topic. There're two "HowTo" blogposts and "TipsAndTricks". I think they cover 95% of Xpiks features you will want to use.

Max number of characters can be set in Settings -> Warnings

Real-time suggestion function is already in the TODO list along with some others. So it will be available in one of the next releases (1.2 or 1.3). Thanks for the suggestion.

Regarding the word removal - we'll see how to do that best.
Thanks for reporting this!

I've downloaded the program, gonna give it a try. I'm using lightroom so it's quite nuisance. ;) Out of curiosity how are you going to monetize the software? I didn't see any pricing on the website.

Hello. Please, describe your system, what did you actually download and when do you get the "Qt5Core" missing info?

If it's Windows version, what was tricky in the installation? You just have to unzip 1 archive.

Ta!  I downloaded from the yellow button on your site for Windows. When I clicked on the Dld file I got file called (more or less) Cpix q t 1.1.3.

In this was a list of subfiles - starting Bearer, then Dict. But nothing installed.

So I transfered these into a file on my computer, found an exe which looked hopeful, and the screen did indeed appear as per the demo - but when I tried again (can't remember quite how - set up the icon) - I got that error message.

I'm not tekky, as you can gather.....!

If you will run it from a shortcut from wrong directory you will get this error. Can you please confirm if you run extract archive somewhere and afterwards you just launch xpiks-qt.exe from extracted location, it runs OK?

Extract archive????

I downloaded the zip file from your site.
Nothing opened.
I found what looked to be a likely Exe and ran it.

If I ran something from a wrong directory it was just because that's all I found!

Hi. Categories via metadata are not supported by microstocks. Submitting categories via Xpiks will be available in future releases via plugins.

Thank you for the fast reply.

I might be confused - if micros don't use categories why submit with them?

Or by "submitting categories" do you mean "submit category-A to micro-A, category-B to micro-B"?

Great software btw. Very classy.

All microstocks use different categories. Description, title and keywords are standart Exif/IPTC metadata of image files (jpg, png and almost all others). Categories are not. So microstocks can read description/title/keywords from image files but want contributors to choose categories manually.

By "submitting categories" I mean that Xpiks somehow will overcome this limitation in close future.

Xpiks release 1.2 is out! http://ribtoks.github.io/xpiks/blog/2016/third-stable-release
Windows and OS X build are available, Linux build soon.

Actually this release was supposed to be later, but because of tons of users experiencing cannot find Exiftool on Mac problem, I decided that some features will slip into next Xpiks 1.3 release and this one will be publicly available ASAP.

Major features of this release:
  • switching between list and grid view options
  • ability to explicitly attach vectors to previews
  • automatic exiftool detection for OS X users
  • upload progress reporting in taskbar on Windows
  • ability to correctly upload vectors to Dreamstime (to the additional directory)
  • logs are now highlighted

"uploading vectors" is processed transparently for you. Almost no need to specific actions.

You either drag'n'drop vectors with previews to Xpiks (images with attached vectors looks like here http://pasteboard.co/20K3feor.png) or select in Xpiks Settings -> Behavior "attach vectors automatically" and Xpiks will search for vector with the same name as preview.

When you upload you have an option to create zip with vector and preview (in the Upload dialog in the Tab "Advanced").

---

No, video is not supported yet.

Nice program ;) Thanks ! Keep up the good work !

Would it be possible to limit the number of keywords at the "suggested keywords" stage ?
I saw that you can "Check warnings" but I think it would be more useful at the keywording stage.

Hi

Well, there's a counter so you will always see how many keywords you add when you use "Suggest" feature.

I uploaded my images yesterday with xpiks for the first time. It really saved much time and thank you for that. I might be wrong but uploading time seemed longer comparison to fetch. Besides that i liked whole thing. Thumbs up!

Hi. Glad you liked it. I didn't quite understand what do you mean by "uploading time seemed longer comparison to fetch". What fetch? Where?

Previous version was working with no error.

Hi

That's sad to hear. Can you please post the logs and give more details?
http://ribtoks.github.io/xpiks/blog/2015/how-to-report-an-error - this is how to get/see the logs

Details I need: operating system, xpiks version, which stock/s you were uploading to, did Xpiks fire any errors?

Also sometimes it takes some time for websites to process FTP queue so you have to wait a bit.

Uploading in Xpiks is absolutely same for all stocks. If some of them worked and other didn't, we have to look for a problem outside of Xpiks scope of work.

Did you read how to upload to MostPhotos? Maybe they process files longer than usual today because of some internal reorganization etc. There're chances your photos will appear after a while.

Also in the MostPhotos FAQ it's said you have to upload vectors to specific folder
3) Upload it to the ftp, in the folder that is called vectorimages

Currently Xpiks does not upload files to "specific" folders. This will be addressed in future releases.

Doesn't Xpiks keep images once added? When I close Xpiks the images are all gone. If I want to upload to more agencies I have to import them again. Am I doing something wrong?

No, Xpiks does not keep images once added. Xpiks is not a file browser tool, but rather processing tool. You open something, process it, get rid of it.

You can access recently opened directories through File -> Recent directories.

Thank you. What does file back up mean? It asks me if I want to back up my files. What happens if I click yes?

When you write metadata to your images (Saving) there's an option not to overwrite the image you opened, but to create a copy of it with metadata written to the copy.
(Usually people don't use it and it will be removed from the interface in future releases)

I tried to use Xpiks for Canstock  but when I try the connection it comes up as red. I have not used it for Canstock before. I used the password I use for logging in to Canstock website. But it comes up red when testing connection.

Please read information in the CanStock of how to use FTP or ask their support.
Maybe you need to use other username, other password or other ftp address.

I downloaded the update yesterday but can't see how I get it to install. Have sent an email to your website.

Suggestion - can updates be constructed so that when you download the new version it just auto updates?

Hi
I have answered you in the support forum. No need to "install" it. Just unzip and open xpiks-qt.exe

Yes, there will be auto-update implemented in future versions.

Hi

Can you confirm that at the same time old version was able to provide you with results and new version is not capable of doing so? If yes, can you send me the logs please and provide with the request itself so I can repro it?

Hi, really appreciate your work on software.
I have question about 123RF, just registered there with 3 photos accepted. Later I put some bunch of photos trough Xpiks and uploaded to Alamy, Fotolia and 123RF. Alamy and Fotolia got the photos just right over ftp, while photos sent to 123RF (connection test and everything else was green and OK) uploaded but were nowhere to be found on 123RF... Do you know what could have caused this?

Hello,

I don't even know if it is possible but are you planning to add keywording option for video?

Any future version that could work with video too? We like the combination of keywording from different sites.

If future version will include video import (even if only screengrabs are in thumbnails), it would be great to export metadata in .csv form.

Well, I can't even get the program to open. As soon as click on it, I get a message that "xpiks-qt has stopped working".

This still happens even when I've disabled my Avast shields. :/

Hi,
I've been using the software for a bit and it is really good! Would you be able to add capability of opening PNG files and adding metadata? Some agencies and most PODs accept PNG files as well.
Happy new year to all :)
