Congratulations Kathi !!

Your story is an inspiration to all of us. Especially when you said, after reading the article you didn't think you would make the cut. And you don't shoot people because you don't want to, and you shoot flowers (because you love them, I assume).

Many of us think we have to conform to others opinions of whats good or not, but all we have to do is photograph what we love, like you do. A couple of years ago, I use to do color blocking, not because I saw it anywhere - it wasn't the trend then - but just because I like the way bright colors work together. I used to do backgrounds with red and orange blocks of color, and pink and orange, and crazy things like that. But then I stopped - because it didn't look like anyone else's and I thought maybe it was stupid. And now they say Color Blocking is the new trend - and I could kick myself !

I would love to see your portfolio, if you would like to share with us.

Congratulations again !

I sent it my application and I can login to my Stocksy account almost on the very first day itself. I did update my paypal and other information. I'm sorry, I'm don't think the ability to update our profile considered as our application has been accepted?

What happened to Kathi? Was this a hoax? :(

Seems odd. Unless the post by onepointfour made her go back and check and maybe she misread what she thought was acceptance. Strange.

EDIT: The link to her Flickr page (which she posted here) is still active, I just checked.

My guess is... she misread the Stocksy tea leaves, was embarrassed, and deleted her posts.

No reason for embarrassment, Kathi. It could happen to anybody.

Still putting my portfolio together so when I saw the request for more info knew it was part of the process but can see how it could easily be misinterpreted.
Kathi - I love those white roses in your port - don't leave us cause you're embarrassed, as you can see, we all understand and hope we'll be hearing that you're in for sure. And if you're not we'll commiserate.

It was the same with me! :D I opened Supply Agreement and the first sentence is: "We love your photos and we want to license them for you." My first thought was "They accepted me!!!" But then I came to realize that I just sent my application so it isn't possible. Now I'm waiting for their response. Kathi, did you experienced something similar? :-)

That, to me, reads like "You're in."

Unfortunate choice of wording if that is in fact not what it means.

They love our photos without seeing them?
Extremely disappointing.
I thought that Stocksy was different from others stock agencies, managed by honest people. In reality they can be liars just like their competitors are.

Yup, I was happy a split second too then I got back to reality pretty fast.

I feel terrible for the misunderstanding but seriously by looking at the link below I don't think Stocksy is at fault.

They love our photos without seeing them?

I think these pages were initially for those who received Stocksy invitation, so they saw their portfolios already. It was last year. They changed the application process and photographers have to create their account, send portfolio and sample images at one time so this sentence from Supply Agreement could be confusing now.

I'll assume it was originally an oversight, but you'd think with this thread, they'd have changed that opening sentence by now.
"We love your photos and we want to license them for you" is pretty unambiguous, so strange if someone then gets a rejection.

Congrats!
But show us the numbers, what we can expect on Stocksy, they still don't have any poll results visible...

Probably because the number of contributors participating in it is too small and/or the global impact compared to all others is too small.

And quite honestly, it's not comparable to all the other numbers in the list. Mostly you are submitting non-exclusive images to those agencies, so you have to add them up. With Stocksy, you submit images (series) exclusively, so you can't sell them anywhere else. Then again, you can sell other images at other places.

So what would be the use if you get a number saying "the average Stocksy contributor makes 5% of his total royalties compared to Shutterstock"? It wouldn't say anything because it could be that (like in my case) they have >2.000 images on micrstock and <200 images on Stocksy. Or it could be that they have about even numbers on micro and on Stocksy. Or they could have images on Stocksy only. So what use would it be to compare an image exclusive agency to all those non-exclusive microstock platforms?

I love data, I love numbers, so I would love to see stocksy jump up into the list. ;)

Many have exclusive images on dreamstime, fotolia or are fully exclusive and still their data is in there somewhere.

would also be interesting to have data on getty, corbis etc...

How you interpret the data is then up to everybody, but no numbers no fun.

Well, maybe it will take a while before enough people share results with the community. It would be wonderful to see stocksy lead that list, so we can see that a fair trade business run by artist is immensely successful.

Might encourage more artists to get together to start their own stocksy if they can't make it in.

We certainly need more successful fair trade businesses.

I sincerly hope the visible success of stocksy can be the spark to inspire other artists to take the business into their own hands. Also being high up on the poll, plus the public announcement that stocksy is already profitable after just one year, can help those that want to aquire funds for starting a fair trade business.

http://www.vicnews.com/news/258039681.html (http://www.vicnews.com/news/258039681.html)

"“After a year of operating, we’re getting close to that magic number of $200,000 in royalty payments per month,” Livingstone says."

The inspiration of stocksy can go way beyond those that make it inside.

And it will be a reminder to the agencies that are trying to ripp us off that the artists have other options.

We are more than just mindless providers of endless image streams.

.

nice sentiments, but i don't understand why Stocksy is said to be a leader in fair trade?
i see others too, eg. 500 px have pretty much the same culture.
..only the hype is less because they don't have the IStock owner behind the hype.
Also, Lee Torrens Canvas.

we forget, IStock started giving away free pictures , and then sold to Getty...and suddenly there is fair trade???  how do you know lightning will not strike twice in the same place with Stocksy
as with IStock?

and at the same breath, everyone is crying foul with dollar club and fotolia. and yes, everyone seems to be ripping you off. that's the nature of the beast, you believe what you want to believe
and i just say, don't be cheering too soon just yet.
IStock exclusives were cheering the same way too, here in MSG before some, many, lost their shirt
when Getty bought it.

but at least you retain objectivity with your final statement... I agree with that...

Well, stocksy can't be sold by the management, it is a coop owned by the artist. That is a major advantage.

I have read that 500pix offer 70%, but I personally don't know anyone getting regular sales there. Are they out of beta and offer a regular producer workflow?

stocksy also pays out all the profits to the artists and work team plus 100% of extended licenses.

I don't know any other place that does that.

If 500pix becomes a strong force in the industry it would be great.

Maybe someone can tell us more in the 500pix thread how things are going. Does anyone know their revneue? That could give people an idea how many artist they might be able to feed. And how many artists have been accepted etc...

i am very impressed with the success of stocksy. They are selling images into a market that has a total oversupply of product, I think it is very difficult to do.

And yes, I certainly see stocksy as an extremely generous fair trade agency.

ETA: Congrats Mark :)

Okay, I just spent the entire day going through photos to find some that would work on Stocksy. Fortunately, I have LOTS of animal photos, especially birds (since I'm a birder) and ended up choosing a bunch of pics that have never been online. Also added a few wildlife photos and some still life photos from my iPhone. Really excited about getting started at Stocksy if they take me, please, please! Fingers crossed.  :D

Many photographers have separate artist pages alongside their normal facebook page. It is a commercial prpfile used to advertise your work. Especially those doing lots of assignments have them anyway, it is just part of their overall advertising. Others keep a photography blog, not just about their own work, but about themes that interest them in general.

I think if you have interesting feeds it is simply a way to get noticed in the industry. Or to cpnnect with other artist or people interested in the same subjects like you.

I don't think I would start a blog or a feed just for a stocksy application. I would only do it if you enjoy doing it or see a general need for it.

Just like keeping your website fresh and interesting with your latest work.

Actually that would be interesting info..  Using your example numbers, it would mean that images earn about half what they do on SS so something a little better than DT or FT except harder to get approved.
Very similar vibe to what exclusivity at IS had in the past but with a fraction of the revenue?

Well, good luck. I have HDs full of natural history, but never felt that was what Stocksy wanted or would sell, one issue being whether a serious natural history buyer would think of looking at an agency called 'Stocksy', which sounds a lot more downmarket than its prices.
Hope you prove me wrong. I guess it would depend on Stocksy's marketing strategy.

Hi everybody!
Two words to introduce me: I'm a photojournalist, 50 years old, my market was destroyed and a couple of years ago I started the business of microstock without too much involvement. For me it is a matter of photographic language, that is too simplified in microstock. I have discovered Stocksy, and
before apply I spent half day to see hundreds of images uploaded in it. Then I have applied in few minutes with 30 pictures stocked in only one of my HDD, I mean without looking for the best of the best of my portfolio. The reason is that I can see creative difference comparing microstock agencies and Stocksy, but not qualitative. Most part of the pictures offered by Stocksy are ordinary pictures, and was not clear for me what kind of style, matters, technical and so on was the right one for the application. I opted for "random selection". My website (for ever under construction) is  (http://www.franzgustincich.it). Now, I don't understand the reason why Stocksy is capturing the attention of the customers, but I hope that will grow, also if I will be rejected, increasing quality.

That was my opinion. I looked at the trend of images "approved" and thought my stuff was 10 times better than some of those images, but not a single response to my account approval request.

its like they dont take me seriously, like my work is so bad, they wont even bother to respond. I have 1200 images on SS and istock so i dont know why my exclusives dont make it on stocksy. They surely are bewildering.

they make you advertise for them?? WOW classy

isnt bruce already mega rich in the first place?? why wud he need to tap his contributors to get air space...freaking weird.

Why are you so angry at Stocksy that you feel the need to bump as many old threads as possible?

And no, they don't actually force anyone to spam their Facebook friends.

Do I sound anggry? haha HELL YES IM ANGRY.

are they really promising to share profits? why dont they just give 90% or whatever upfront? Why this game of "sharing at end of year" Sounds like a corporate trick.

And that guy is already mega rich...how many gold tipped, ivory back scratches does he need to afford?

he should be giving back to photographers, not taking from them, he is ASKING US to spend OUR MONEY to advertise for him?? OUTRAGEOUS!!!

Are you just angry because you can't get in?

If I were an editor I'd be doing my darnedest to make sure I didn't let someone like you in, even if the quality and subject matter of your photos was exactly what I was looking for. Manners matter. You're not doing yourself any favors.

Or it's like they have over 4000 applicants for only 500 slots, and a very small team responding to everyone.

are they really promising to share profits? why dont they just give 90% or whatever upfront? Why this game of "sharing at end of year" Sounds like a corporate trick.

Because a company needs to spend money to grow, and because a company costs money to run?  Contributors get 50% royalties, 100% on extended licenses, and an annual dividend.  That's just how the co-op is set up.

And that guy is already mega rich...how many gold tipped, ivory back scratches does he need to afford?

Do you realize "that guy" is no longer the CEO?  The CEO of Stocksy is Brianna Wettlaufer, and Stocksy has a board of directors making decisions.  There is no "that guy" swimming around in his Scrooge McDuck vault while cackling at the misfortune of photographers.

he is ASKING US to spend OUR MONEY to advertise for him?? OUTRAGEOUS!!!

Once again... no.  No one is asking contributors to spend money to advertise Stocksy.

Hi Über...,

I have to admit from reading your posts, I didn´t think you had applied at all. I mean, it is obvious with any kind of application, wether you are applying for a job, a business partnership, a scholarship…that being polite is a normal part of human interaction. Why should anyone let you in, when you are already rude and aggressive while waiting outside?

Even if your images were better than those of the 4000 other applicants, a small agency lives through teamwork, a coop even more.

Many people are sad or frustrated because they are waiting for a reply or because their application was declined. But you don´t see them being rude about it, the way you are.

It is perfectly possible to express frustration and also critique in a respectful way.

I'm glad it's finally out there: part of your acceptance into Stocksy is based on your behaviour. Those who have been mouthing off here are showing that they aren't going to be good on the Stocksy team. I'm not sure why it needed to be said.  You know Sean is here, and I've spotted a few other eds, and a few contributors (some keep it quiet), and you've no idea what influence they have at Stocksy, why would you mouth off if you wanted to get in?
