Title: Goodbye, Symbiostock
Post by: Shelma1 on January 08, 2016, 14:34
Well, the inevitable has finally happened: Bluehost has shut down my Symbiostock website for performance issues. And they also shut down my personal portfolio site as well, since it was hosted under the same account. So now at the very least I need to find a new host and rebuild my personal website, since I need that for my real career.

Any suggestions for a portfolio site?

What a waste of time and money the whole enterprise was for me. Sad.

i think you can copy your folder tree from the server and upload it to another hosting server, I think that is possible, but depends on certain factors. sorry to see this happening to you

Oh no, not one more minute wasted trying to figure out hosting and whatever else. My personal website only needs a few examples of my work, so I'll concentrate on that. It's good that the decision was made for me, I suppose.

have you talked to bluehost?   I've had similar shutdowns thru justhost; their tech support is excellent &  it didn't take much to get going again, as long as you are comfortable working with phpadmin, sql, cpanel stuff;  all your files are likely still there

it's pretty straightforward -- WP leaves a lot of trash behind - I empty the analytics history table, then optimize the bigger tables (repair & optimize are just commands you click on)

https://my.justhost.com/cgi/help/496  has details for justhost but should give an idea of how to proceed

I have 2 sym sites with about 10K images each, and I now need to run this every 3-4 mo; takes just a few mintues once it's familiar

I was using bluehost once as well until they one day simply decided to shut the lights off because the site was using too many resources.  Fine that they have limits but just shutting things down without notice doesn't seem very professional to me.

I ended up going with siteground

again, justhost shut down my sites and sent an email with no prior warning; but they were just as fast to give excellent advice and I had my sites online the same day

as webmasters we need to play well with others on shared hosting systems -- the problem is partly that most users aren't aware that wp db  are slowly degrading performance -- it may take a year or more for these problems to show up

I just found a simple wordpress portfolio theme and use that, hosted on JustHost. I built it a couple of years ago and have only had trouble with it once. One day a client told me all the images of my work on my site were missing. I googled it, others had the same issues, found the solution and fixed it. Something in code, not even sure how it got messed up, maybe one of the wp updates. Other than that, all has been good.

Just so there's no confusion, this relates to the old platform and has nothing to do with the current Symbiostock plugin.

I use BlueHost too - I have two other WordPress installations on the site as well as my Symbiostock site.

I've never done anything with the database but looking at cascoly's post thought I should perhaps start :)

BlueHost has myPhpAdmin in the cpanel tools and their instructions on Repair/Optimize are exactly the same as Justhost's. I have no idea if that made anything better, but all three installations are working fine (it said to back up first, but I didn't).

If it's as simple as getting BlueHost to turn your site back on if you promise to run these utilities, it took less than 5 minutes once I figured out where things were. You may be OK to keep going for a while longer with just some trivial maintenance

just so there's no confusion - the problem is with how WP handles tables - particularly post-meta -- have you made changes that address these problems?  if so, that would be a reason to look at the new sym for those with many images

I was looking for a hosting company a year ago for my website and it took me about a month of researches coz I just couldn't make up my mind - I wanted unlimited space, good uptime, decent reviews, not too pricey. So, what I remember from that time was that Bluehost had so-so reviews and some of the worst "uptime" statistics meaning a lot of downtime for the websites they hosted and the websites shut down etc. Here is a good resource to compare the hosting companies and read reviews: http://www.whoishostingthis.com (http://www.whoishostingthis.com)
And it really should not be a problem to move all your data to another host once you've found one - all hosting companies do that (and you probably paid them for the back-up), should be much easier than rebuilding the whole new site..

Thanks for all the advice! But it's too late...I cancelled my hosting and even changed my avatar...see how relaxed I am now? :)

Not sure if you're just looking for a new host or a completely new platform but I'd suggest checking out Photodeck or Photoshelter.

Obviously, any company can leave you stranded but I think you're less likely to run into problems like this when using a service provider.

I tried using a Wordpress theme from Graph Paper Press on GoDaddy hosting but the problem I've found is that affordable hosting has crappy performance. They're budget slow. Buyers don't like slow. Google doesn't like slow. So if nobody can access your site and Google doesn't index it, what's the point? Fast hosting costs a lot.

Photodeck and Photoshelter I believe both have plans starting out at $10 per month. Photodeck I really like and any problems I've had they've been receptive to fixing. Photoshelter I also like but the experience has been a bit more bumpy.

Hope you find something good. Setting up a new site is a ton of work.

ETA: You may want to remove your Vector999 link which is advertising BlueHost  :)

how many images did you have on your site before shutdown?
this was the reply i got when emailing bluehost to ask why shutdowns happen:

Bluehost does not set arbitrary limits on the amount of disk space a Subscriber can use for the Subscriber's website, nor does Bluehost charge additional fees based on an increased amount of storage used, provided the Subscriber's use of storage complies with these Terms. Please note, however, that the Bluehost service is designed to host websites. Bluehost does NOT provide unlimited space for online storage, backups, or archiving of electronic files, documents, log files, etc., and any such prohibited use of the Services will result in the termination of Subscriber's account, with or without notice. Accounts with a large number of files (inode count in excess of 200,000) can have an adverse effect on server performance. Similarly, accounts with an excessive number of MySQL/PostgreSQL tables (i.e., in excess of 1000 database tables) or of database size (i.e., in excess of 3GB total MySQL/PostgreSQL usage or 2GB MySQL/PostgreSQL usage in a single database) negatively affect th
e performance of the server. Bluehost may request that the number of files/inodes, database tables, or total database usage be reduced to ensure proper performance or may terminate the Subscriber's account, with or without notice.

if new members are not allowed to ask questions on posts over a certain time period please let me know so i'm not making a problem anywhere.

Why wouldn’t you just start a new thread and ask about bluehost? Are you building a symbiostock site? See the confusion?

I figured since I saw someone with an actual shutdown experience with bluehost I wanted to find out the details of their experience so I and others could make a better decision about hosting there or not.  Would still like to know the info...would help in knowing if bluehost is a fit by learning what was not a fit for them already.

Considering making a symbiostock site but hosting it on bluehost, or other place depending on info learned about previous bluehost shutdowns.

Thnx for any replies.
