I already have a hosting package with 1and1 ..... I get the impression they're not great for Symbiostock .... but are they completely out of the question?

Would like to get started with a Symbiostock site, but only have a small portfolio and don't really want to incur additional costs if possible.

Many Thanks

I seem to remember that one of our German members tried with 1and1 - try a search for 1und1 , I cannot remember whether he managed it or not.  Maybe he could get wordpress but not install Sybiostock - or maybe that was another host

I was on 1and1 - still am for most of my websites, but I had a lot of issues with Symbio in the early days - I moved to Bluehost after about 2 weeks if I recall and set up a new hosting package there.

Hi Steve, could you elaborate a little on the problems you were having? Are you confident that the problems were indeed to do with 1and1? Much appreciated, many thanks

Installing Wordpress is the biggest hurdle at 1and1 - I have an account with them and gave up trying to get it to work properly. JustHost have an auto install for WP which made the whole install painless - the theme runs fine with them.

I'm sure it was to do with the inability to handle large images - if I recall, you need to put the php.ini file in every folder in the Wordpress installation - and I found a script that did that somewhere on the web - but even when I did that, I couldn't get the amount of memory assigned to my account up to the level needed. I do have some issues uploading images to my other WP blogs on 1and1 when I have complex plugins installed (like the shopping cart stuff) and I think it is all part of the same issue. I contacted support at 1and1, but didn't really get very far at all.

As everyone was having success with Bluehost, and it was only $4.99 a month, I gave up on the 1and1 site for Symbio and went to Bluehost. Never really had any issues since.

I've had multiple 1and1sites (MS & Linux) for years - I couldn't install sym since I already had smugmug running from the root, and easrly on that caused problems. so I went with justhost rather than waiting for the issue to be resolved.   haven't tried to install sym since then, but my experience with 1and1 tech support has been excellent - they've been helpful even when it's been my db program code that's caused trouble.

I started with 1und1 (as my other sites are hosted there and  4 additional domains were for free), but 1und1 does not grant you enough processing power. You won't be able to process images larger than 10 MB there. My domain is still registered at 1und1 but the nameservers point to bluehost now, where I moved my symbiostock site. Bluehost will charge  $4.95/month ... even if you have a small portfolio, I would  invest this money as Symbiostock has big, big potential if you ask me (and it's fun ... you'll see :-) )

Thanks for the responses.

It should be noted that the $4.95/month deal with Bluehost does require a 36 month payment in advance ($178.20).

I am excited to get on board with Symbio but as I said, small portfolio (tiny actually), so need to keep start up costs right down.

Moving all my hosting over to Bluehost is definitely an option but a bit of a hassle and since other people are likely to encounter this problem, it would be useful to understand exactly what the issue is with 1and1.

Is it that over 10mb jpegs is the problem?
Or is it that over 10 megapixel images is the problem?
(both these have been mentioned).

1and1 support did have this to say, but I dont know how these memory quotas actually relate to Jpeg sizes?

Apparently my standard hosting package at 1and1 gives me 30mb PHP memory ... (4.99/m +vat).
If I upgrade to 1and1 Unlimited package then I get 60mb (6.99/m + vat).
Upgrade to 1and1 Business package I get 80MB. (9.99/m + vat).

Would this additional memory actually solve the problems?

Having said all that, it looks as though it would probably just be cheaper to switch anyway :-/

My problems with 1und1 are almost forgotten  :) ... but if I remember it correctly I was not able to process an image larger than 10 MB (quite sure that it was like that) and if I remember Leo correctly your host should offer you more than the 80 MB php memory you can get from 1und1 (I guess it was at least 96 MB or even more, but I'm not sure about that ... anyone around who remembers that? )
