Hi guys.

I cannot find any information relating to how I get my Paypal IPN?
Could someone shoot me a link or tell me please?

Thanks :)

I went through that a couple of weeks back. But I needed assistance too, so I called PP support. They emailed me the following directions:

*********
With Instant Payment Notification, PayPal sends payment notification messages with encrypted code to the specified URL for each payment you receive.

Go to the PayPal website and log in to your account.
Click Profile at the top of the page.
Click My selling tools.
Click Update beside "Instant payment notifications" in the "Getting paid and managing risk" section.
Enter the notification URL and select "Receive IPN messages."
Click Save.

********

I didn't understand what the "notification URL" was, but it turned out just to be my website URL. Knowing that would have saved me a lot of time, because I ended up having to talk with Bluehost support as well.

Give those directions above a try, and if you use your website URL as the "notification URL" it should work.

Good luck!

Hi Martha

Thank you for a quick and very helpful reply, that saves me a lot of Googling and pulling my hair out :)

When following your directions, is my IPN then www.mysite.com?
Its just that Symbio puts in http://mysite.com/symbiostock_ipn/ as an example of an IPN address

Ron, things aren't always easy when you're first trying to figure them out. There's a slew of essential information scattered all over the place. Easy to get overwhelmed.

Yes. That's what I did and it worked for me. Try it.

Glad I could help! I've certainly benefited a lot from the experience of others here. Happy to pay it forward.

The address that Symbiostock puts into the Paypal space should be correct and you do not need to touch it.  Worked for me anyway

If you want Paypal to return your client to the customer and download page after payment you need to fill in bits on paypal (I believe this is only available with Premier and Business accounts)

Yes, this is the correct ipn. It only needs to be in the blank on your SY site. You do not need to fill it in on paypal at all. The address is delivered to paypal at customers checkout.

See this thread

I will add though that i have a personal paypal account. If you have a different type, then what christine said may be correct about filling in other blanks.

Well, gee. Now I'm confused about something I thought I had figured out two weeks ago. That Paypal email I shared with gejam was dated Aug 2.

This is an example of what I meant when I said that essential info is scattered all over the place. I don't recall reading that thread you referenced from Aug 11, but that's probably because I thought I'd already figured it out. I was about to start mud-wrestling with Yoast at that point.

Maybe my PayPal setup is wrong, and maybe I gave gejam the wrong advice last night.

Sorry, gejam! I'm heading back into my site to fix that now.

OK, my IPN is now set correctly in PP, using that notification URL provided in Symbiostock settings (which I hadn't looked back at since I set up the basic site about 6 weeks ago). It was easy to do once I knew what to do.

Thanks, Christine and Cathy, for the clarification.

No worries. I would not have known either, had Paypal not sent me that warning. I got the email on one of my sleepless nights and worked on it in the wee hours. I was surprised Leo was even awake, though he is at least 3 hours earlier than where I am, and he gave me the answer, fortunately. And you are right...info is scattered across tons of threads here.

This thread is labeled with a good subject title, so others who are having IPN issues should be able to find this thread. It makes a great case for labeling the title of threads with good info...this one, compared to "Help! I have problems" or something very generic like that. :)

But I think I will create a new thread with this info because those of us who started early on might have the same issue I did.

If you google PayPal IPN its the first two results. Its quicker and easier than opening a thread here. You can stick a minus on my post, but its a fact. The OP said he couldnt find anything on PayPal IPN, I dont even see how that is possible on the internet. I also dont understand why every post that is slightly critical needs to get a vote down, even if its just an observation and factual.

As far as googling for Paypal IPN info...I think the OP was referring to it in relation to how it works with the SY theme, and google won't have any answers about that.

Sometimes a vote down just means someone disagrees with you. Do you like it when you get plusses? For me, it means others feel the same way I do and agree. Likewise, if someone minuses something, it tells me that someone disagrees, and that's ok too. I might rethink what I said, or I might stick to my guns. Or it could be just some a-hole. I take it as seriously as I do when someone unfriends on facebook...not very seriously.  :)

How can you disagree with a fact?  :)
