I wonder how long it will be until another Calgary office will be closed?

It does make you wonder, the way things have been going. I was speaking to someone in the SS/BigStock office a few months ago and when I asked how many people worked there nowadays the answer began "Hard to tell, new people arriving every week ...". Bet that's not happening in 'another Calgary office'.

So the business is relocated, this should have no effect on us. But I wonder what were the reasons behind this move.

http://www.techflash.com/seattle/2011/10/corbis-folds-in-veer-adds-seattle-jobs.html

Seattle’s Corbis Images is moving its Veer microstock images operations from Canada to Seattle, opening up 67 jobs locally, including tech and marketing positions.

The move involves closing Veer’s Calgary, Alberta, office at the end of the year. About 80 workers have been given notice of the move, said Jen Morgan, director of communications for Corbis, told TechFlash.

Corbis, which is owned by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, purchased Veer in 2007. Veer launched in 2002.

Veer’s Calgary office has gone from 150 employees in 2007 to about 100 a year ago to the 80 affected by Corbis’ decision to move the operations to Seattle, according to the Calgary Herald.

In Seattle, Veer will maintain its brand, Morgan said. Veer provides user-generated photos and images for customers to use in ad and marketing campaigns on websites, corporate brochures and other formats. Veer’s stock photography and stock illustrations are aimed at customers looking for bargain-priced images.

Photo contributors will continue to have access to Veer’s platform to market their images.

Corbis has spent the past several months beefing up its images offerings to media clients, including the Splash News acquisition, the photo-distribution partnership with The Associated Press an investment in the freelance photo agency Demotix.

And now the Seattle-based digital images agency is looking to do the same for its commercial business that provides stock photos for ad and marketing campaigns and corporate reports, including Veer’s microstock offerings.

I read that Microsoft are trying to buy Yahoo again, they own flickr.  It will be interesting to see, if that goes through, what will happen to the Getty relationship with flickr?  It would be a lot easier if Bill Gates just bought Getty/istock.

^^^So nice to see our friends Hellman & Friedman are interested Smiley  It would make sense for them to get hold of flickr, going to be interesting to see if anything comes of this.
