Title: Veer deleted several thousand pictures from my port
Post by: eclaire on May 12, 2013, 04:32
Veer deleted several thousand pictures from my port without notifying me. I'm talking about 4000 pictures most if not all have been ported over from Snapvillage-days. The thing that astounded me most was that some of these pictures had pretty good sales over there and I have uploaded them only because of the higher prices Snapvillage once had (no other microstock-agency ever got them) so absolute no reason to delete them actually it looks not too smart to delete exclusive high-quality content on their part.
Did anybody else got his Snapvillage-images deleted?
Personally I will stop now to support them with images they have never been really good (got some decent sales though) and their upload limit is just a pita.

My portfolio shrank by about 1,400. There has been no comment or explanation from Veer.

Sorry to hear about that.
It is really unfair and incorrect!

I removed all my photos from Veer and closed the account.
And I know the reason why :D

I lost about 1000 images. I don't know the exact amount or the reasoning behind this :(

That trash can is going to get pretty full, the way the agencies are acting.  :D

Regarding the issue at hand...when I read the first post I was skeptical. But sounds like it's happening to a lot of people. I quit Veer a long time ago, because I had only one or two sales after a year, and also because they wouldnt allow an opt out on something (subs?). So I don't follow their forum at all anymore.

Could this be a problem with their database or something?

edited: to include the "so I don't follow..." sentence to make more sense.

I opened a thread here about the same thing about a month ago. Less images missing in my case (about 200) and certainly nothing to do with Snapvillage (never been there). Still have no idea what has happened, but I have to admit that I didn't bother asking Veer directly yet...

I also just realized that I lost about 300 images there. Bummer. It's gonna be harder and harder to get payouts there if they keep doing this.

I haven't been keeping meticulous track of my image numbers there.  I'm not aware of them dropping (currently at 5500 ish) but I doubt I would have noticed if they cut a couple of hundred of them.

You're right about the difficulties of making a payout though. I was doing better there a year ago with thousands fewer images.  I used to get at least a payout a month there and recently took three months to make payout.

It seems that all the images transferred from the old Snapvillage are gone. So if you started up with Veer after the Snapvillage era you may not see any deletions, but if you are an old Snapvillager you do. It's a shame that there is no official comment from Veer on this.

What a joke.  I lost out when they were paying for uploads because most of my portfolio was transferred from SV.  Now that's all gone.  So by having some loyalty and sticking with SV, they've punished me twice.  This better be temporary.  I'm so fed up with Veer, they used to communicate here but now they ignore us.  They used to sell quite well but lately its slowed down.  I used to think they had a future, now I'm thinking they're a waste of time.

Exactly. Maybe they are deleting old non-sellers like Dreamstime? Just guessing...

Hopefully Brian from Veer can give us an update.

Initially Brian did a fantastic job keeping us in the loop of what's happening at Veer but once again it appears that they also started running a tight ship where staff is overwhelmed and communication suffers. It just sucks.

Same story over and over.

Hi all

We've temporarily deactivated some older content from the Veer UGC collection to bring more stability to our platform as we prepare for the launch of our new site.  We'll be reactivating this content once the new site launches.

I'm not always able to check in on this forum, so if anyone needs a quick answer concerning their Veer account, the best way is to send an email over to [email protected].

Thanks!

Is there any chance that we could be told in advance of such events in future?  It doesn't seem to have affected me, but it's obviously quite scary for people to see their hard work disappearing with no clue as to why.

This voting system is nuts.  Why give a site admin that replies to a thread here -1?  Makes no sense to me.
Thanks for the info RyanB, you have a +1 from me.

It wasn't me, but if I was at Veer, I'd probably want to -1 them for not telling people in advance. The nippy note about contributors needing to send you a note doesn't help; you should have told everyone first, which would surely be easier than replying to a flood of concerned emails.

Thanks RyanB for letting us know what happened. It is much appreciated.

I'm still a bit confused though, because I'm sure Veer management didn't come up with the idea to move to a new platform a couple days ago. Such transitions are (hopefully) long planned strategies and I simply cannot understand how Veer would remove content (what does UGC stand for anyway?) without informing its content providers?

Not only that, buyers might have bookmarked images that are now gone and cannot be purchased.

I cannot tell you or your management how to run Veer but this sure is one messed up launch if content needs to be disabled. Somebody didn't do their homework right if stability of a long standing stock house is at stake...

Not happy.

I voted it down, for the reason Sue mentioned, Plus, the OP had 4000 images removed, how do you think that affects his income? Plus, if your platform is so wonky you need to deactivate thousands and thousands of images, then something is wrong.

So for those 3 reasons I voted it down. I dont see the problem with that. Or do we need to swallow everything an admin tells us and be happy with it.

In addition to file disappearance I am noticing a mess with picture order in my veer portfolio, there is no way to properly sort it by upload day.

Thank you for explaining, though the proper way would be to inform contributors before something like this takes place. A short email to contributors or announcement on the contributor main page could have avoided all this confusion and ill will towards Veer.

To be honest, having 4k images removed from veer probably didn't affect his income much.  Sales there have gone from poor to absolutely DISMAL, even with me uploading the maximum every week.

But I do get your point.  This type of thing should be announced in advanced and hopefully remedied when the new site is up.

I thank Ryan for coming in and facing the angry crowd to offer an explanation though.  It's much appreciated.  And I sincerely hope that the new site will be able to sell images in much higher and more consistent volumes than the current one.

I think its wrong to shoot the messenger.  Its veer that caused the problem, RyanB has helped us by informing us about what's going on.  We have every right to be angry with Veer but I still think it looks bad when we complain about a lack of communications with sites and as soon as an admin posts here I see they have -2.  I much preferred this site when we didn't have the +1 -1 nonsense.  Should I -1 Leaf for that  :)

Nobody shot the messenger.

Yes it is a privilege to be able to read Veer's "official" responses to our questions. However we are also free to voice our opinion about how we feel about these responses with the means given by this forum.

I didn't like or dislike Ryan's post (as in clicking the heart or -1) but rather wrote a response to make a point why I'm not happy about Veer's decision.

Just because Ryan is the messenger does not mean that we have to like what he says...

Also I'm sure Ryan knows that it's not him we're mad at... Hopefully our posts will clarify that.

I have also experienced a HUGE slow down in sales at Veer. Despite my portfolio increasing. Doesn't look good.

As for the new site Ryan talked about, I heard nothing about this before - anyone else? It seems not.

I just looked and found this tiny little piece of info stashed in the Veer News section from February...

"In all seriousness, Veer would not be Veer without you. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your enthusiasm, patience, top-notch content, and for sticking with us. 2013 is a big year - we're renovating and rearranging to make searching and buying a breeze for customers. There's other stuff in the works, so keep your eyes peeled! "
http://www.veer.com/more/contributor/news/ (http://www.veer.com/more/contributor/news/)

But seriously, who reads that? I am all for a new site upgrade, but surely this is news to spruik and tell everyone about via email, facebook etc.

Anyway, I seriously hope this new site upgrade can start turning things around for Veer. I really liked them but lately they just seem to be falling flat.

I don't get why a site would have to delete a bunch of stuff just to roll out a new site. I've never heard of that.

I agree, sounds prehistoric. Imagine one of the big 4 micro sites disables large sections of contributor portfolios for weeks on end just to work on a site upgrade. There would be huge riots such as never seen before.

It might be because the Snap Village files were key worded differently and some of them were hard to find?  Perhaps they're going through them to sort that out?  Or perhaps they just want to review them all again as their standards have changed?

I think its appalling that they didn't inform us about this.  Something changed there, they used to be quite communicative but now they're like several of the big sites that seem to think its fine to keep us in the dark.  That's a bad attitude for a site that's now down in the low earners.

Again.... some people that were NEVER on SV are reporting missing images, its not related solely to Snapvillage.

Exactly. And I never heard about the "Veer UGC collection" that Ryan mentioned, so I have no idea if any of my images were in there and that's the reason they have disappeared.

I think UGC is user generated content. Old line agency speak for the great divide between "professional" photographers and crowdsourcing. I hate the term (and I don't think it really covers current agency content; it's no longer people selling their vacation snapshots)

They have clearly learned nothing about communication - it would have been trivial to send out something about this in the recent newsletter or an e-mail just about this. Two or three sentences would have done it.

Whether or not this is the case, their attitude conveys an impression that they don't much care about UGC contributors and keeping them informed.

Why on earth would any images need to be deactivated for that? With just an ounce of competence, there's no need for anything to happen to the current site you can sandbox . out of a new concept on a subdomain or whatever gives without anybody ever noticing anything at all until the finalized shiny new sites pops up.
