123RF is introducing geographic weighting to the search, based on the country of registration of the contributor.  See the announcement from the newsletter below and the link to the press release.

Can't wait to disambiguate my incorrectly associated images.   >:(  Really, I shot that teapot in France, and then flew to Brazil and shot it again, that's why it should get geographic weighting in both regions...

"NEW: 123RFs New Search Tab: GeoRank and how it affects you?

123RF has just released a new search ranking system called GeoRank a couple of weeks back (refer to our Press Release here). GeoRanks purpose is to float up results from contributors that are closer to the region of the buyer who is making a search and will produce a more localized search result. For example, a buyer in Europe searching for business images would get more European models compared to when the same search is conducted in USA.

For the time being, GeoRank takes the geographical information from a Contributors registered country. We understand that this has a few shortcomings - What if you shot the photo in Canada and the buyer is in USA and youre registered in Europe? To overcome this, we are rolling out a CSV import tool that you will be able to use to designate which images should be GeoRanked differently. So stay tuned for more developments as we crank up the accuracy of 123RFs GeoRank!"

Agree. I could be an Indian photographer in Europe shooting Asian models.

At least it's just another tab selection for sorting the search and not the default search option.

yeah not a big fan of this. Seems those in locations (such as me in Australia) other than the US and Europe (where the VAST majority of buyers are from) will lose out, as my images wont be as 'relevant' as theirs.

I haven't uploaded to 123rf (although I have left my portfolio there) since they announced the commission cuts new RC-like scheme. I am not going to spend any time doing anything to help them tag images - all my images that are exteriors have keywords for the location. Where I'm living has nothing to do with any of that.

Sales there have been surprisingly good over the last couple of months, but I think they're delusional if they expect contributors whose commissions they just cut to help them out with scut work on the site.

So let's see...I am registered in Canada, but most of my images were taken in Ecuador or Japan... do I have to go back and redo my images for the little I make from this site?  I think not.

Think about it, how many people are going to do this? I think not many, so what happens is they end up with a database full of images pinned to a location that dont make sense. grsphoto is a good example, so he has a Japanese businessman posing in front of the Tokyo Skytree pulling up in front of a buyer in Canada as supposedly a Canadian businessman.

Classic move to be expected from an agency that sells cutting royalties as a good thing.

Just for laughs, I am not going to it, and all my Dutch locations will pull up for Irish buyers.  8)

Think of it, it might actually hurt my sales, LOL

Absurd

If I am a buyer living in Lichtenstein, in Andora or in the Baker Island I am surely more interested by images shot in other parts of the world  than by images shot close to home

I am baffled as to the decisions 123 is making that will drive their business into the ground. There is no differentiation in this decision that makes them "one up" on their competitors, no obvious logic that inherently improve sales for THEM or us.  And what about image quality/content? They will promote less popular images, poorly produced images in some cases over more appropriate, more aligned images for the buyer.  Who is the customer here anyway? It's the buyer.  The buyer deserves to see the best an agency has to offer regardless of where the photographer lives. Really very disturbing decision.

I don't think this is a big deal.  It's an option, not the default.  I think the idea is that photographers who live in a particular area are likely to have more and better images of that area and models who look like they are from that area simply because of better access - someone who blows through in a couple of days for a photoshoot or vacation is only going to get the highlights but will miss a lot.  Makes sense to me.  Could also lead to commissioned work if someone needs a photographer in that area.  For me it will hurt as I don't live near anywhere interesting so my images of everywhere else will get pushed to the back, but I suspect few buyers will use it.  As for disambiguating images - good luck with that, not going to happen for a 25-cent sub sale.  I remember when DT introduced the geotagging option for travel pics.  I did a few at first but it just took way too long so now I never bother.  Maybe it's hurting sales, but I doubt it - probably too much trouble for buyers as well.

Lots of local stock photographers never leave their studios and if they do, they choose a generic location. When they cast model shootings, they often try to get a multicultural mix, even if that isn't really reflected in their area. They shoot what sells.

I'm not going to bother with this Georank. Waste of time and I'm pretty sure it won't change anything in terms of (more) sales.

I agree, this seems like a bad idea!

This explains why my sales have dropped by 50% the last month or so.  Most of my photos are not geographical in nature and sell worldwide given the chance.

Old thread alert!

BTW my sales dropped more than 50% since May 2015!
They changed something and I will stop uploading my new images because of this!

Thank you for pointing out the old thread.   Interesting that you and I both experience 50% drops at the same time.   Wonder what could be the reason??

Old thread or not, I still think this is very relevant. Seems limiting. Surprised to see no change over the years. Photos should have no bounds, especially stock photo.

I didn't realize it was an option.  I assumed I wouldn't be able to submit if I didn't select a location.  But that's why I'm here today - to see if I'm the only one who doesn't like this "feature".

Good to know I can leave that alone. Next time I upload, I will disregard.
