Title: 123RF seems to be tough - initial review 6 in, 4 out. What next?
Post by: Nemo1024 on June 16, 2008, 13:49
I try to enter 123RF and submitted a batch of 10 files this weekend for initial review. They were hand-picked from my newer work and each file sold between 3 and 60 times on IS and/or DT. The results of inspection have just arrived - 6 accepted, 4 rejected with poor lighting/composition. I can live with that, though 123 will be missing on some sales. (See, I have a relaxed attitude towards rejections after a year of tutorage at IS :D)

I have some questions, though:
1. The accepted images are not in my portfolio - does it take some time before they show up there (like in IS)? Currently I can only see them in the history (nice feature, by the way).
2. Can I upload more images or am I still in review mode?
3. Is this the normal approval rate at 123RF, relative to IS (I have 50% AR at IS and if 123RF offers 60% of that, I can only expect 30% AR at 123FR :) )?

For the curious, here are the rejected files:

I was rather surprised that I had a batch of 6 last week, 5 of which were refused. So far I've found them to be one of the easiest sites to get images accepted at.  The same files were subsequently accepted at Shutterstock, Istock, Stockxpert & Dreamstime.

I don't know if 123RF are tightening up their act, or one of their reviewers had a wonky monitor. However a further 5 I submitted yesterday and all were  accepted.

Ha ha, I've just seen another more comprehensive post on this same subject here http://www.microstockgroup.com/index.php/topic,4908.0.html (http://www.microstockgroup.com/index.php/topic,4908.0.html)

hence the edit

My issue, which confuses me the most is that the 6 accepted images do not show in the portfolio. Do I have to resubmit these 6 + another 4? What is my next move?
I couldn't find any clear guidance on the subject.

I believe it takes a day or two for the images to appear in the portfolio section.

You should be able to submit more images anytime.

They are all getting tougher. I believe we have reached a saturation point for our standard micro shots.

BUT. This must be a good thing I think. I think we are on the verge of discovering new types of images that the buyers are looking for. We just need to work out what they are.

My suggestion to you is BE SELECTIVE.
it's not how many you submit that matters, it's how many gets accepted.
Less is more.
If you are more strict with your selection, you will be less disappointed as more , if not all, of your submissions will be accepted.
To be honest with you, I discard more images than I submit to 123RF.

Finally, just because SS takes your images , why should it be that 123RF has to do the same?  :o
It's absolutely irrelevant.  ::)

I agree. Some of you ppl talk like SS is Corbis or Getty.
Get real ! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Maybe it was a fluke shot too! ::)

Hi everyone!

If you're not too happy with your latest reviews, do kindly email [email protected], we will definitely look into your rejections and do list down images you feel will perform well but have been rejected, please just give us the image ID, we'll give it another whirl.

We're tightening up standards here at 123RF, so do keep contributing as getting things right after an order has been issued is at times very tricky.

Do email us, our doors are always open for discussion and dialogue :)

Thank you, Alex, I will send a "second chance" request. It is great to deal with an open company!

A reply to the other folks - I did not compare 123RF to SS - I am not even an SS submitter. All I said is that these files were approved AND sold multiple copies at IS and DT, so I felt that they had quite strong potential...

I think the response  about shutterstock may have been directed at me Nemo, as I did mention that images had been rejected at 123Rf had been accepted at shutterstock   (as well as several others). I was just surprised that  a site that I had an acceptance rate of well in excess of 95% suddenly rejected 5 out of 6 shots, that were subsequently accepted at other sites. I thought that it may have been relevant to your rejection, especially as it appeared to be a one off.

Good for 123RF if they're  looking to improve their standards, I like the site and have seen a regular improvement on my sales there this year, albeit with a small portfolio.

I upload exactly same images to many sites. Some allow me to upload a lot some like IS or BS are limiting upload.

My acceptance rates are:
FP 96%
YAY 95%
123RF 60%
DT 39%
BS 37%
StockXpert 30%
SS 25%
IS 21%
CS 13%
FT 12%

I think 123RF is one of the easiest to upload.

After having now uploaded my entire portfolio with 123RF, I tend to agree - they are not as bad as I feared, in fact they are pretty good! :)

Here are my approval ratios from various sites:

MostPhoto (http://mostphotos.com/index.php?referenceid=5134) - 100% (duh! :))
YayMicro (http://yaymicro.com/register.action?referredBy=Nemo1024) - 99,82% (only 1 rejected)
123FR (http://www.123rf.com/src_nemo1024/profile_nemo1024) - 72,07%
CanStockPhoto (http://www.canstockphoto.com?r=27166) - 69,12% (before they started to get tough)
iStockPhoto (http://www.istockphoto.com/Nemo1024?refnum=Nemo1024) - 61,29% (with resubmits, it's only 42,21%)
DreamsTime (http://www.dreamstime.com/resp514226) - 48,68%
Fotolia - 24,24%

PS: You have here enough info to calculate the total size of my huge protfolio :D

If you learn from your rejections, you acceptance ratio will grow with your portfolio.

My (all time) ratios are:
123 93%
DT 83%
SS ~83% - estimation, hard to say precisely not having data from the agency
FL 76%
IS 73%

IS has acceptance stats. Click on "upload" that is on the left side of your profile page. You will see your acceptance rate under Misc Stats.

Thanks, so my official IS acceptance rate is 73% :)

I suppose 2% difference(I estimated 75%) is either my estimation error, or different way IS and I counted re-submissions.

1- they will show up soon
2- as I know you can upload now, if they didnt change it recently
3- there is no normal rate of a site.. it depends on you.. I am %100 at 123rf.. never been rejected..  maybe because it is vectors, I dont know.. but question yourself, not 123rf..

finally, for the rejected files: %100 right decision..

no offence by the way, I am just too direct with people.. good luck..

And by the way, where did that come from? "initial review"???

it does not exist on 123rf.. only if it's a new thing?!

you just start submitting right away, and even if you are refused you still keep uploading new files..

also, they take everything anyway, so they don't need a review:)

I am not talking just about myself, a friend of mine who tried SS many times and got refused, has a good sized portfolio on 123rf..

good to hear they are getting tougher..

I do  not find that reviewing on 123rf has changed at all. If they reject, that either means than image is of not so good  quality or they do not want any more images of the kind. 123rf acceptance rate is very high in general.

ironarrow, thanks for the comment, but it is a bit too late - as I wrote in my last post, I have finished uploading my complete portfolio to 123RF. :) Oh, some files got accepted after a second chance request.
Another thing. On IS Lupins sold 8 times, Forsythia - 3 times, Chopper - 2, Tallinn panorama - 1 time (on DT within a week of being uploaded), so I can't agree with you agreeing 100% with those rejections. :) In my books, any file that sells is a good file.

till this day, i haven't had any images rejected except for two .
one was due to less than adequate lighting (a propellor underwater),
and the other was a little overprocessed.
so, i think 123RF is more than reasonable, and an excellent site to work with.
just keep trying,  8)  good luck.

Thanks, I do that with all the sites :) And as I said in my next to last post, I have become rather fond of 123RF's review process. :)

Nemo, as I said, it is no offence, just my opinion.. I have a different approach.. For me quality is a different thing than just that image selling..

I have many images in my port that I don't find good enough.. I have an image that made me $100 in all sites.. but I don't like it.. I think it is not good, but somehow it sells..

It is not because my image is wonderful, it is because maybe they don't have many similar images so the buyer has to go for mine..

anyway, good luck..
