Title: Special Invite to Participate in 123RFCares - for Japan Tsunami Relief Efforts
Post by: alex123rf on March 22, 2011, 01:54
Dear Contributors,

123RF.com would like to offer its sincere condolences and prayers to the victims and extends its support to those affected by the disastrous earthquake and tsunami that struck the north-eastern coast of Japan on March 11, 2011.

We are deeply saddened by the tragic images of loss of life, family and homes. We would like to offer compassion and support to the survivors and have set up 123RFCares - Tsunami Relief Fund. 123RFCares is a special account created for 123RF.com users to donate through downloading images.

We wish to invite you to donate an image (or several) for the Japan Tsunami relief efforts. 123RF.com pledges to match dollar for dollar for every image downloaded from the 123RFCares account throughout the campaign period. We are going to route all proceeds to the Hong Kong Red Cross society and we also have their support of our campaign.

For more information please visit: http://www.123rf.com/blog/blog.php?idblog=b1000179 (http://www.123rf.com/blog/blog.php?idblog=b1000179)

Here are some information which you should know if you’re interested to contribute your works to the 123RFCares account:

A simple act of contributing an image can make a big difference. Every contribution will provide services and comfort to those in need and in distress. Let's do our part for the affected communities. I wish to personally thank you in advance if you do indeed join us in this special donation drive.

Thank you,

We have a local office in Hong Kong, but no offices in Japan. Also please note that we've made this campaign REALLY official, we wrote in a proposal to the Hong Kong Red Cross and sought their opinions and secured their approval (we have a letter too) before kick starting anything. What with a lot of people creating scams that say they are going to donate etc. to a certain cause but that proceeds never get to the proper aid channels. We just want to do things credibly and properly.

Hope that answers your query?

Thank you!

Alex.

Do I take it that you are matching the commission that would go to the photographer from these images, so if the photographer commission equals a dollar you put up a dollar?
I'm not sure what percentage commission you pay but I strongly suspect it is less than 50%, which suggests to me that you will profit from the sales of these donated images. If so, that's just plain wrong in my view.
ALL the proceeds from sales of donated images should go to the charity and anything you give should be on top of that.
There is the world of difference between (some) "proceeds from all downloads will donated to the Hong Kong Red Cross" and "ALL proceeds from downloads will donated to the Hong Kong Red Cross".
Corporations seem only too willing to see other people's misfortunes as a cheap marketing opportunity to promote a "caring image". I said it about iStock's announcement and I feel just the same about this one.

Thank you for your input.

ALL commissions to that account shall go to the Red Cross.
+ 123RF Limited will match the commission value as our own contribution.

Example, commissions total up to $500, 123RF shall also donate $500, making it $1000 to the Red Cross.

I hope that's sufficiently clear. 123RF.com has always split 50%-50% Nett commissions (credits) and paid $0.36/download for subscriptions with our contributors.

There is no element of "gain" or "profit" from this. We didn't even do any Press Releases. This is totally from our hearts. This is a donation drive, it is only proper that everything should go to charity. Correct?

Thank you.

Alex.

That's clearer, thank you.
So will donated images get an ordinary search ranking or will there be some special treatment? Also, can existing images in the collection be nominated or do they need to be new? And is the license they are sold under going to have the standard terms?

Cool :) going to drop some images in.

Forgot 123 offer 50%, we should promote them more (especially when I've had strong growth there past 3-4 months :))

edit: how do you add an image? and is it only images relating to helping (like the examples) or any image?

Hi all,

We will promote all the images on Facebook, Twitter as well as special sitemail, blogs and newsletters.

The License shall be under an RF or Editorial nature - depends on the Content.

@phil just submit them to [email protected], we'll help you do the rest. Any image will do really, we just had a theme going because we want Red Cross to know that our cause is a noble one. A new image is much more preferable, it's easier to manage it that way. (I know you may want to remove the image later once the campaign is over, and then accept it into your own portfolio).

Thanks everyone, we hope we manage to get some good donations going here.

I think it's a great idea and I have no doubt your intentions are sincere, so I'll send some of my new stuff once I get it done.
So the images aren't automatically transferred to the regular collection when the campaign is over ? We have to resubmit ?

Thank you for your support, really!

We can channel your submission into your portfolio -- all you have to do is instruct us to do so and we'll get it done for you.

Thank you very much.

Officially it's until March 31, 2011. However, the very last date we can wire money to the fund is April 9, 2011. So we're trying to maximize the length of time :)
