Title: why is 123rf FTP server so slow?
Post by: Peter on July 01, 2008, 12:52
On every agency I upload, I can use my maximum uploading speed alowed by my ISP which is about 25 kb/s. But only 123rf has the slowest FTP server, and upload speed is half of it - 12 kb/s. Why is it so slow always?

The management of 123RF have carefully designed the website to tweak people just to the edge.
Hidden into the website are features that at the end of the day allow
the admin's to kick back, while they open a beer, put their feet up and laugh at all the contributors.

It's a sorta hidden camera in the lady's dressing room if you will.
Hidden into the software are 2 key features.

The first is an algorithm designed to throttle back uploads to the site
so that maximum torture is extracted from each contributor. Maximum effect is achieved with 3 or more files.

The second is a hidden cookie embedded secretly into your browser, that requires you to log in every time you visit the site.
Maximum frustration by the user is achieved exponentially with each subsequent visit.

I know if I owned a micro site I would do the same thing. I would take it one step further though.
I would also require one of the those captua boxes....you know those squiggly letters you have to type into a box then hit submit.

Only mine would be programed not to work the first time and require a second entry.

LOL!

Moneybookers already did it - if you type those numbers too fast, it says they are not correct, and you are forced to try again. lol. The minimum time for enter is about 2 seconds I guess, any less is error. hhhhhh

You can always try our ftp proxy and see if that changes the experience for ya.

Ok, I will try it in next batch of upload, in a few days. Thank you.

(So I have to change host name (from submit.123rf.com to ftp.123rf.com, and use my user ID instead of username? and add @submit123rf.com after it? And password is just my password, or is it 123rf+password?)

HI peter,

let's say your 123rf user id is peter
and your password is peterpw

so...

server: ftp.123rf.com
username: peter@submit.123rf.com
password: peterpw

is that clearer?

Thank you!

Alex.

Very slow for me as well. I didn't try what you suggested yet tho Alex.
It uploads for me at about 21 KB/s when the usual speed for uploading is about 120 KB/s.

I uploaded one large batch of files yesterday and another today over FTP and it went at my maximum capacity of 46KB/s, so no slow-down here.

I try all the combinations and every time I connect to the FTP it rejects my password!
