My last Alamy sale was through a distributor and the distributor got 40%, Alamy got 20%, and I got 40%. The sale price was $49.35 so my cut is $19.74 which still beats most other sites by a mile but it isn't the 60% I know and love. I was wondering how many others have had distributor sales and if they end up being a significant percentage of total sales (this is my first, but I haven't had very many Alamy sales).

They turn up from time to time. I don't see a trend towars it though. You can always opt out if you like but I've had an $800 distributor sale, which still left me $320.

It's better than 17%- on iS.

Totally normal.  My last one was on January 11th.  The image is to be used in a Canadian textbook

Gross - $92.17
Alamy - $18.43
Distributor - $36.87

That left my share at $36.87.

Your results will also vary by the monetary exchange rate.

If it makes you feel any better, through a complicated/convoluted scheme, at one of my other traditional agencies they had a distribution agreement with Photolibrary which got acquired by Getty and whose images ended up indirectly at Thinkstock.  The net to the photographer was $12.5 cents.  In July, the agency severred the relationship with Thinkstock for this very reason.

Quote from Distribution Details (My Alamy/Distribution)

Quote
You receive 40% of a distributor sale, whilst continuing to receive your standard commission for sales through Alamy (i.e. non-distributor sales).

I get at least a couple of distributor sales every month.  I think it says a lot about Alamy as a company that they take a smaller cut of these sales than the contributor gets.  I'm happy to participate :D

Agreed.  Even more impressive they are able to sustain giving 89% of their profits to a non-profit medical research foundation.  I'm more than happy to work with Alamy and sincerely appreciate being able to contribute to a worthy cause rather than some greedy *insult removed*'s bottom line.

I had one earlier this year for $236, my cut was $94.40.  I would rather have had 60%, but that is still probably more than I will make on some of the smaller sites all year so no complaints.

Thanks for the answers everyone. It sounds like they happen, but they aren't taking over. I agree that it is nice that Alamy takes a smaller cut on these so that we get 40%, which sure beats some sites I won't bother naming.

Mainly, I am promoting just Alamy! They deserved it...
Some of agencies and my portfolio there, I will never promote...
It is the only tool for us to try change something on this stock market...

Promote better deals for you!

P.S.

Yesterday, I had one sale of 80$... How many images I have to sell on IS to get same money, even ELs?

Occasionally, I make sales via distributor agents for Alamy. One of several sales I made this month turned to be a ridicolous amount for an Italian website:

Country: Italy
Usage: Low res for electronic and web use
Media: Editorial website
Placement: One placement / one website
Image Size: up to 450 pixels
Start: 16 May 2012
End: 16 May 2013

Alamy Distribution Commission   20%   0.77   USD
Distributor Commission   40% 1.54 USD

total left to me: 1,55 USD (just little more than 1 !)

Just enough for a cup of coffee  :D

If anything, my distributor sales are going down. The first year I was with Alamy, about half of my sales were distributor, and I get very few now. (out of a small number of sales). I'm ambivalent about that, as while 60% is nicer, 40% is better than nothing, and better than I get on iStock.

I get 1-2 a month.  Nothing to worry about.  What I don't like is that I don't see anymore $150-$300 sales.  All crummy $29 sales now.  Alamy is turning into microstock for me. They have cut commissions than change pricing schemes to ensure that the bulk of our sales are $29 bucks. Too bad.  But they do STILL pay a better than the other RF agencies.  It's just frustrating to see my sales go from $400-$500 a month to $200.  Same shi_t different agency.

It is very confusing trying to follow the threads about sites that I don't use but am interested in.  When you are discussing Alamy in this thread is it about RF or RM sales?  Or, is this tread about both types of licenses?

Warren - you have both options. Basically if your RF images on MS are RF there.  RM will be anything else you may want to have there.

I understand that, Mantis.  What I was wondering is if "this" thread ... the commissions ... is about RM sales or RF sales?  Or, is it the same for both?

My comment related to a RM sale through a Canadian website for use in a Canadian textbook.  I have many more RM images on Alamy than I do RF

However, the commission is the same RF or RM. 60% for direct sales, 40% for distributor sales.
