Hi, all.  I just uploaded a batch of about 30 photos to Alamy, and I've decided to go exclusive with those images.  I've been with Alamy for about a year, uploading nonexclusive RF images, and have one sale.  With this latest batch (a beautiful blonde model with various facial expressions, varied wardrobe, etc.), I decided to do a test and make them exclusive to the site.  If you were in my position, would you go RF or RM?

Since you're interested in doing a test, how about making them RM, and just upload them to macro sites? Alamy does not require exclusivity, and -  as I understand it - if a buyer is interested in exclusive usage rights to a particular RM image, Alamy can contact you.

I'm guessing you feel these 30 photos do not have a "typical micro look" (I'm using that phrase very loosely, of course) -  otherwise, it might not be the batch to pick for your test.

If you make them RF, and then place them also on micros, you may find you're in competition with yourself - with a potential buyer searching for the image (tineye/image.google/ImageExchange's) & buying it for less.

(You should not make them RM and then place them on micros (RF), since that would be breaking Alamy's guideline about not offering same/sister images as both RM & RF.)

According to some of the people on the Alamy forum, the assumption that RM makes more than RF is flawed. Seems like the same question keeps coming around month after month and the whole reason behind it is "More Money". If RM doesn't bring in more, then the premise is false, so the whole debate over mixed licenses is a waste of time.

There's no reason not to just put everything up as RF, that's already RF on Micro sites.

As someone else so aptly pointed out. the Alamy RF is more like an EL, and that's why the higher prices.

The only reason I have 93% RM is the motor sports photos have no property release, no model release, no trademark release... and are edited with News Editorial standards in mind. There's no way they could be RF and in fact as I click No Model Release, Alamy easily blanks out RF and makes them Editorial RM. It's nice and simple.

But please don't assume from the start that RM makes more than RF. Like everything else, what's the subject? What's the use?

Subject and use are irrelevant as far as RF is concerned, I suppose two things that recommend RM are 1) the chance that you may get repeat orders (but that amounts to nothing if they sell a 20 year license) 2) the chance that you might be the guy who hits the jackpot with a huge exclusive-use RM sale.

As far as prices go, they are all over the place. Some RM uses may net more than RF but often they are much the same. Of course, with RM you know what has been done with your image.

Yes, and that is the biggest difference that I've found as well. Although it still doesn't tell me who the customer is, at least I know it went into a book with a four year license. Good point.
