Title: Do food photos sell on Alamy?
Post by: HappyBunny on December 22, 2016, 02:37
Do food photos sell on Alamy? I have uploaded the same images I sell on microstock to Alamy but have not had one sale yet. My portfolio is small with about 220 images. I also uploaded editorial images but no sale. It seems such a waste of my time. I am doing perfectly fine on microstock even though I uploaded only 290 images so far.

Anything can sell. I had a sale of pills on white background for 200$ gross. And also another sale 195$ gross, different subject, both files also on MS. I suggest you shoot local food, for example traditional food for your country, and tourist places etc....

Also, as others said, it takes a while before you get any sales, I went a year without a singe sale, now I have them, not many, but they're there. Had 5 sales in november and 1 this month and expecting one more to be reported in January because I found one of my images used on www.telegraph.co.uk (http://www.telegraph.co.uk)

Most of my sales are RF and I have them also on MS sites....but it's also true I don't have many RM images at alamy, probably less than 30.

There's probably nothing wrong with your images or what you're shooting, but 220 images is a tiny portfolio on Alamy. In order to have regular sales you'll need a few thousand images.

Given you think uploading on Alamy is a waste of time, how much do you make with 290 images on microstock? a few dollars a month? maybe less? isn't that a waste of time? remember, Alamy is not microstock. The sales volume is less, but the average price per image is much higher.

I think to make a real go of Alamy you have to shoot images that suit their market whether its worth it or not is a personal judgement and depends on how much time you have. Next year I'm planning to shoot more and spend less time on low earning sites (for me). Best to concentrate where your style/abilities where get best returns I think.

I am good at shooting travel photos but I am not going anywhere on holidays in the near future. When weather is bad I do food photography . However, the few travel photos I shot are selling well on microstock but no sale on Alamy.

For "Travel" I think alamy needs documentary/story telling pics rather than pretty postcard travel agent type stuff. Doesn't always need to be anywhere exotic

I only took the postcard type of travel images. I only started with stock photography 11 months ago that's why I don't have more images yet. Of course I don't earn lots of money on microstock but my images do get bought. I have not sold one single image, not even an editorial on Alamy.

You don't need to be a tourist yourself to shoot travel photos. Think of your own place as a travel destination for others.
