for news hounds with the latest scoop photo, you can now bypass regular alamy qc and get it quicker to buyers. it will also accept min 5 mb (uncompresses) images. how does this translate into mp?

It's probably more like a preview to be seen by prospective buyers.

Citizen image had a similar service, you would send images to an email they would check on cell phone and would offer to buyers.  At least this is what I understood.

I had a 2mp file printed in a paper at quite a large size and it looked OK.  They could get a few million great images that other sites would reject because they are too small.

Given what sells in micro for me (mostly XS,S,M), and what I've sold in macro (mostly 1/4th page), 2MPix would suffice for most applications.  Even a bookcover, if the original image is good, would print well.

But then here, in this case, it's not general editorial images, right?  It's photojournalism.  Sports events fit in this, I guess, but not a school basketball tournament.

Every newsworthy picture is photojournalism. The school basketball tournament is newsworthy for a local newspaper.
There are some smarter people than me :

Dook, I don't think Alamy is aiming the local newspaper, but things that can interest worldwide buyers. You know, Tiger Woods playing golf, not your neighbour. :)

I think you are right, but it is worth to try  with uploading a few local pictures if you have some on your hard disc, or if you shoot local news.

Thank you so much for reporting this here!
Being in Manhattan/Long Island, NY area, I'm often photographing news events and contribute a bit to Alamy. Last night I took photos of astronaut Fred Haise and former Grumman President Joe Gavin at dinner for 40th anniversary of Apollo 13 mission, and was all excited I could submit them this way, but the application process doesn't seem to be in place quite yet.

Great development . It levels the playing field for all those film premiers which need to be seen by picture desks ASAP. Unless you are a macro agency or are savvy about how to supply news pictures directly yourself, then this is great.

I also like to historical pictures / archival pics from 5mp upwards. It open's up a new channel for those older pics lurking scanned into a hard drive.

Go to: "My Alamy"

(look down the page a little on the right)

"Additional revenue opportunities"

"Apply to join the Reportage/Archival upload route"

You need to apply and be accepted to get access to the upload path for News. It's not automatic.

They ask for a website, and I don't have anything newsworthy at mine. I guess I have to upload some, I have several sports events photos - the latest was the Red Bull Air Race last weekend.

I've never had a website, just sent in news pics by FTP / Email for 10 years. I am not sure why a website would be a prerequisite for supplying news material. I'd investigate further as my guess is that they are just they are interested in what type of news pics you can supply.

They still make wads of money from red carpet arrivals for anyone living near civilisation, unlike me who has the odd stray sheep. Bizarrly though, the Queen is heading over my direction for a visit, come to see the commoner's and check on her estates. I'll keep my camera handy, if I can avoid the crowds and press with Royal rota passes.

I think I tried last week without a website address and the form didn't accept it.

That's the problem with forms, no intelligence!

I will have the same problem as you, so a quick email to their support could be an idea. Hello, lots of newsworthy things happen near me, my portolio is full of great stock, however I am a technophobe with websites I have to run by myself. What should I do with me wonder newsworthy images as your editors will love them. Lot's of love etc.

I used my alamy portfolio link as a website :)

Cannot tell whether this works or not, no reply from them

Modified. Posting here was sufficient to get instant rejection. Do not use my approach :)

Though I shoot newsworthy events regularly, I didn't have any of those pictures in my online porfolio until recently. So I added a "reportage" gallery with carefully selected images and sent my submission form around the end of April.

Just received my approval email one hour ago  8)

The new upload for reportage/archival is a Flash application, but I still haven't tried it.

Congrats, ErickN.  I have several sports images - surfing, marathon, the panamerican games, the air race - and a couple of other events - New Year's fireworks, Christmas parades, even a protest in Riga.  I'll select some and put them on my website too.
