I have signed up and now I am looking at the QC portion with the 4 test shots. What are they looking at for the testers? Quality. Saleability? Composition?

I basically going to keep images that I shoot for them separate from stuff I shoot for Micro. I want to expand my horizons without getting rid of what I am trying to do already.

I have read through this section on here so I see all the great info on up sizing and other things so more for me to absorb and learn.

Ah, old hippie hit one heart!   ;)

I can't tell what they look for, but I would do the same as in any other site: variety, sharpness (original), color, exposure.  If I remember it right, I sent architecture, animal, flora, landscape.

Broken Record Mode... ON  ;D

Alamy only (honest, they even answer questions like this) only review for image quality. Not composition, or content or anything else you can imagine.

Exceptions are what they call glamor and objectionable materials.

Good exposure, no heavy shadows, sharp with contrast, no interpolation errors, no jpg artifacting, no fringing, not over manipulated, no dust bunnies, no flaws, and the photo of a brown rock in the brown sand will get accepted.

Broken record stopped skipping.

That brings up another point. How many young people have actually heard a broken record? Destined to become a historic term that will have to be explained.  :) Hey it's like film. Analog music.

Hippy didn't hit one because I knew of Alamy since I journeyed into Micros. That site has also come up a few time in one of the Online Photo Boards I am on as a place to make money so its been on the back burner for me. I wont stop doing Micros so Hippy missed on that. Alamy will be alongside with different photos.

Still not sure if I even want to try out Getty.

Thanks Race. I am 37 so I have enjoyed 2 Record sizes... 8 Tracks .. Cassets... CD now MP3 and MP4. My first record was Snoopy vs. the Red Barron...lol. Wish I still had that for a Collectors Item.

Remember the Original DVDs? Laser disk as big (or bigger) as records.

A biggy racephoto missed that causes many rejections is SIZE! your image must not be less than 5200 px on the long side and no less than 48 mb in size. So if you use a crop sensor camera you are going to be faced with upsizing and a dreaded soft focus rejection as a good chance.

He didn't ask that question?  :) Maybe my fault for assuming someone read the submission guidelines.

But if he had, I'd say 48.2 is absolute minimum. If you make them 48mb the file will be 47.8 and you'll fail before it gets to the review.

There is some debate on how big. Some members say they get better sales with bigger photos. (which isn't an option for those who have to upsize to start with) but Alamy says there is no sales advantage to making larger than needed photos. If you make your photos 48.2 to 50mb photo file size, not file size on disc, you'll be fine.

While we're adding. They say don't sharpen at all, but that's with a wink of the eye. The truth is, minimal sharpening is allowed, but not so much that it can be seen. For first submissions, don't do it!

The upsizing I had already read about in here. I was just wondering more about if they wanted certain subjects like the Micros. Didn't see that so I asked but might be handy for someone else looking for answers too. I think I am going to stick to RM with Alamy since I got RF covered with the micros... hence Different shots for each. I know I don't have to but just a personal preference. Now it's time for me to go get some shots for my first attempt.

Makes me wonder what it is all about, you say you are not sure if you want to try Getty, then post that you submitted images to Alamy that were soft and you thought would fail, if you are posting images that you feel are sub-standard for a submission to an agency, don't hold your breath waiting for a sale, and I would forget the other traditionals for now  ::)

Congratulations on getting into Alamy  ;D

The Getty thing is what I read about them. Not sure if I want to try them with they they operate.
The Softness thing was not sure how sharp they wanted..like all over because I dont have an infinity setting (I have Kit Lenses). They get a little soft towards the edges or at max zoom. I guess some lack of confidence in there too. Never know until I try. Now I  see they were good enough upsized (and remaining sharp enough) for the QC People. Its more about learning Stock Shooting at this point for me but with the possibility  of earning some money.

So when do I learn the secret handshake?

Alamy QC you only on the first shot of the batch. This being the bona fide assumption that you submit only your best shots to Alamy, so they don't need to check on you for each and every image you submit.
That being said, if you knowingly upload a soft image or not up to par, you only cheat yourself as no one will buy it.
Congrats and welcome to the Alamy team ;)

According to Alamy's "Prepare Images" page (http://www.alamy.com/stock-photography-guide.asp) they actually check ALL four images for your test submission, and "a sample" of each subsequent submission - so you can't rely on it being just the first shot of the batch.

So congrats and welcome, you passed!
