Excuse me for starting a new thread -but I think this is pretty major news that has got somewhat lost in the thread here http://www.microstockgroup.com/index.php?topic=27342.0

Around post 10, James from Alamy dropped the news. With the forthcoming new contributor tools at Alamy you will now be able to choose a new RF Editorial category. Why is this important? Well it means that those of us that concentrate on editorial images on microstock (which are RF) will now be able to upload the same or similar images to Alamy - exposing our work to a whole new set of buyers. For anyone not clear about the current situation -editorials on Alamy have to be under a RM (Rights Managed) license and they do not allow you to upload images that are available under a RF license elsewhere.

With the new RF Editorial category you will no longer have to make that either (Alamy) or (Microstock) decision. Of course, I understand that many contributors may wish to continue to keep their portfolios distinctive on both -which you can. For contributors like me who have their editorial ports as RF on microstock (and, therefore, currently excluded from Alamy editorial) this is great news!

I'll be interested to see the price.
At the moment, some small sales (under the UKNS, which we can opt out of) which are RM can result in many repeat sales (if we find, report and eventually get paid for them).
It won't be so good if the RF prices were the same as the tiny RM prices, but the files could be reused many times. Hopefully the RF price will be set considerably higher.
RF is a curse for contributors.

It's a smart decision.  Looking forward to adding my RF editorial collection to Alamy.

It does not make a difference for me (like many other macrostockers) as I like to be paid per each usage (RM) and keep better control where my work is used, so no RF then.

About Alamy's position on the right side - I think we can expect to see it even above SS, on the first place soon, as sales are increasing nicely for many people. My friends who joined Alamy last year, sold first images in first weeks/ months, even few files at once. I'm still surprised to see microstockers complaining that they have no sales and at the same time they push their work to micros for 1/10 - 1/100 of the price... It's nothing unusual that (some) clients will choose the cheaper option = less sales on Alamy.
I said it long time ago and keep saying - support good agencies and good sales will come ;)

James,

Just out of curiosity. Will RF Editorial still be unedited? It will be like if we choose that we dont have releases for a property or person a RF image will get automatically the status Editorial Use Only?

Thanks!!!!!

Hi Mirco - well, you're now veering into asking support type questions for things that are not yet live! :)

There will be an editorial only option you can select for your RF photos on Alamy - as far as that being automatically assigned etc, that would be logical and is in our plans for testing but I can't confirm that things will work exactly in this way just yet until we've finalised everything.

We appreciate your patience.

Cheers

Mebbes aye, mebbes naw; but now Alamy will be offering RF Editorial, they will be swamped by content already on the micros, which presumably they are well aware of and welcome.

Added: I'm not remotely excited about this. I'm in Alamy particularly to support the RM model.
Be careful what you wish for!

I for one will be happy that I no longer have to do two different shoots of editorial on different set ups one for Alamy and one for the rest.

It's not possible for us to give solid dates at the moment as things change and we don't want to give inaccurate info, but it will likely be a few months from now.

Thanks

Exciting news!  I would also be interested in exploring the possibility of migrating RM editorial to RF.  Not a big deal for me since I am fairly new to Alamy and haven't uploaded a lot as of yet.

Is Alamy going to give video a nudge any time soon?
