Title: Sales at Alamy. Any updates?
Post by: litifeta on June 03, 2008, 18:10
Just wondering how you lot are going.

I saw a thread on another site where a guy had sold 60 odd images.

It is 280 subscription sales on micro.. :)
Sharpshot, are you selling on Alamy a different content than on micro? Or the same images only in biggest sizes?

I began a few weeks ago, have about 50 images on Alamy. 140 views, one zoom and no sales yet. Looking ahead, building portfolio..

6 sales in May for me (BME), 4 RF an 2 RM, ranging from $65 to $350.  I have 285 pictures with them.  It took a while by now I'm getting consistent sales every month.

Last month Alamy was 60% of my total stock photo income.  I hope the same trend will continue in June :)

How long was "a while"?

I started with Alamy on June 2006.
Had my first sale on December 2006.

Then had a couple of sales every other month or so.

Since October 2007 I had at least one sale every month.

hey guys

Just wondering.. am i alowed to sell the same images rights managed on alamy as photoshelter RM?

Cuz i know they are non exclusive but just wasnt sure

you can sell RM anywhere as long as it is RM everywhere (cant sell an image as RF in one place and RM elsewhere) and each place is not exclusive.  If one site sells an geographically exclusive licence (ie exclusive use in USA for 3 years) then you will have to inform other places you are selling image through that it is not available in that location.

Yes, photoshelter and Alamy are both non-exclusive.  Like Phil said just make sure to sell a RM pictures everywhere, and not RM on one site and RF on the other site...

I am selling different images.  I don't like the thought of losing a big sale because the buyer finds the same image on one of the micros and then doesn't go back to my portfolio on alamy.  I might change my mind in the future but I am going to try and keep them separate.

The one I sold was an ordinary landscape that probably wouldn't make $10 on the micros.

No sales for me there yet.  Been there for over a year.  Currently 298 images on-line (some recent uploads). Measure: 5,794 views; 46 zooms

I must be doing something wrong...

In fact, I have been considering pulling all my RM images and making the RF - obviously, I'll have to wait for the 3 or 6 months for them to come off the RM sites before I can submit them as RF.  Just mulling...

:o :o :o :o :o

The day after I posted the message before this one.  Guess what?  I had a sale at Alamy!! :o

Woohoo!

It was an RF sale for $85 of which I get $55.25.  Better than a slap in the face with a wet fish.  ;D

Nothing yet but I just started uploading a couple months ago and only have about 25 images there of mostly one subject.

At last yesterday got my first sale with $85 commissions.

Interesting that this sold illustration had no zooms. It denies theory that without zooms can not be sales, like I red in Alamy forums.
In fact on search results page customer can add image to cart and can buy it without zoom.

I began upload 5 weeks ago and now have ~300 online with them.

This is not a micro site so Alamy work differently and have thier own research request team that will do a search for a customers requirements, and present the customer with a lightbox of images that match the requirement, these do not show up in the views as they are viewed offline.

I have has a sale the same way when I had only 10 online images, same as you with a net value after commision and fees $85  ;D

Thank you Adeptris for clarification.

I was desperately checking and counting my views and zooms as I thought that without zooms there are no sales :)

Of course they matter to CTR but now I know that sales can happen suddenly without them.

wow,  such large amount in commissions with so little sales.
i am impressed. congrats ppl, and it's definitely more worthwhile
to work at your images for Alamy, instead of peanuts in micro.

btw, one thing, are the images you submit to Alamy different in context
or composition to the ones you had in micro. In other words, are your Alamy sales more creative and less sterile?

Just curious and wanting to learn the market differences. Congrats again.

The short answer is yes and no. My portfolio at Alamy is fairly diverse, and I see sales from both straight stock and the more quirky images, although I'd have to say that many of my better sellers are from shots that probably would hit the trash bin of the micro previewers. Not suitable for stock or poor composition and such. It's really a good thing because it helps divide where images go. My low sale at Alamy is $39 and high is $1635. I get 65% so that would be around 3200 DL at .33/DL in the micro world. However it's a lot easier getting a DL than a $1600 sale. No decision is straight forward.

I've been getting a few questions off list about where to put images and should they be RF or RM etc. The answer to most of these questions is, you need to try for yourself. If your images aren't selling on macro I don't need to look at them to know that they may not be suited for macro, same goes for micro. Which image will sell best? Who knows, the market is large and diverse, soon as some one needs it and you have it it will sell. As far as RM and RF is concerned, that's another who knows. You need to place non released editorial in RM, that's a given, after that it depends on where you want it placed. The only real way to become an expert in this game is experiment, asking questions is fine, I do it all the time but get out try different things, then you can tell me.

Just curious if most people here will sell their RF images on micros AND Alamy or if you just sell an Alamy RF image on Alamy.  I just got accepted there and was thinking of loading my micro portfolio RF there....the issue is to leave it up on micro as well or pull them as (and if) they get accepted to Alamy.  I had a few responses on another thread, but not many and just wondering what most folks do.  My gut feeling is to pull them from the micros as I go but I want to get a clearer idea if that would be dumb or not.  Most of my stuff is nature oriented which hasn't sold real well on micros...maybe $175 in 5 months on SS and hoping they will sell better on Alamy

Pull them once they are on Alamy!

Howard it can be done the way you say, but Alamy is a lot slower that the micros, but revenue for a sale is better, they have a lot of accounts clients so you could have a sale today and the buyer pays in 30-90 days, and they pay when paid, that aside it is not good practice to have the same image or similars on both at the same time, some have had refunds for finding the same image on the microsite after a sale.

I do not know your style, but you say nature etc:, Alamy will accept images on quality only, they do not edit the collection, so you will have no "Don't need this" or "to many" type rejections, if you have had these from the micros then you could upload these images to Alamy to test the water, without compromising your micro's.

Like Alamy some micro's have time restrictions on deleting or disabling images, bear that in mind when choosing what to upload.

On Alamy you can create  pseudonyms, I have ones like "David - Cox Nature" and group my images like this, my advice is to create pseudonyms that do not link you back to the microsites in a search, I am no longer with the Micro's but I may venture back when the price is right, and I have a different name on the micro's, than I use on the macro's, so a search for "images by" will not bring them all together.

Welcome to Alamy, there seems a trend here of photographers looking to Alamy and Photoshelter.

Right. I'm only uploading my junk to the micros now, and if it gets rejected 'tant pis' as they say round here.

I have a feeling that the micros are gradually going to discover the truth in the saying "If you pay peanuts you get monkeys". And it's possibly one reason why IS is pushing its exclusivity deal so hard.

I got accepted back in February 2007, didn't really start uploading until June/July.
First sale in December 07 for $144
Then one in March 08 for $100
And then in May 08 for $115
And one in August 08 for $332

Four sales, total of $691, of which I get $449.15

I had far more images keyworded with Shutterstock back in the day, and didn't see anything like this for the average return per image.

Just recently keyworded about 400 images to the piddly 100 or so that earned me the first four sales, and have about another 800 accepted that I have to tag and put up for sale.  Hopefully that'll bring a big boost in sales.

I have around 1500 images, and have for about two years, mostly RF but a few hundred RM. I was averaging about two sales per month on Alamy for the last two years, and the first three months of this year I had three or four sales each month, that was until July. No sales in July or August (and May and June hand only one small sale each month). I uploaded a bunch of images and i think that screwed up my ranking, however under general search terms many of my images show up on the first page so I don't know what happened. Around the beginning of the year I was considering only focusing on macro but now I've made a 180 degree turn and I'm thinking about just focusing on Micro. I've uploaded a few hundred new images to Alamy, Acclaim, and Photoshelter and nothing to show for it for the last three-four months. Maybe my particular type of images fare better in the micro world, don't know. Anyway, uploading and keywording images for Alamy, Acclaim, and Photoshelter is a lot of work for no sales. By far the majority of my income comes from the micro world with fewer images. So I'll give this new uploaded batch until the new year but unless i see at least one or two sales I may take everything down and send the images to the micros. I really hate how Alamy ranks (penalizes)  images based on similar keywords because photographers who specialize in a niche are essentially screwed. I do a lot of business conceptual still-life's and they all require essentially the same keywords but i get penalized for that. i can create a new pseudonym but the ranking of that new pseudo is low and from experience I know a new psuedo usually takes a year before it sufficiently climbs in rank, so either way it's bad for me to create images that I enjoy creating.

Hmm... I've got a notion of why you're seeing a drop.

Alamy went from like 6 million to over 13 in a relatively short time period.  You're competing with a TON more images than you were before, and based on what people have reported in terms of sales, I'd imagine a huge number of people 'just getting into' alamy did their very best to imitate (and out-do) many previous submissions.

I'm also gonna go ahead and guess that a huge majority of images produced a year or more ago aren't going to have much use for a while.  What was 'cool' or applicable last year certainly doesn't look current today.

I think I've found a bit more of a niche for what's selling, at least for me.  I'm going to try to put a great deal more of that type of image up, and see where it takes me.
