Title: Should I opt in Alamy Novel Use?
Post by: sugarthepunk on July 14, 2015, 02:22
I'm a vector artist and have been submitting my works to the Big4 sites for years. Recently I decided to try Alamy. Only uploaded 5 artworks so far which of course haven't gotten any sales yet (they are some of my best selling work though). I was wondering if I should opt-in Novel Use to get some sale activities going on. I did research and saw that some people don't like it because of the very low commission like $1 and such. However, since I am used to small commissions from the other sites anyway, should I just opt-in? Beside the small commission, is there anything I should be concerned of?

I think they are phasing out Novel Use. I used to get lots of them but the last ones were in May 2014.  So I don't think opting in will make much difference now.

Sharpshoot answered your question. They said they were phasing it out and I too haven't had a novel use sale in about a year. It doesn't hurt to opt in if you don't mind the low prices (50 cents to $10) but I don't think it will make any difference.

I got an ordinary (not NU, not UKNewspaper) distributor sale yesterday, netting me $1.63 (sic). So if you're able to be in NU, you're not necessarily losing much.

OP here. Thank you guys for the responses. I am still trying to figure if it's worth uploading to Alamy after all. I am doing pretty good on other sites but on Alamy it's just very quiet. Though I am not too surprised because why anyone would pay $49 for a vector when they can get the same image much cheaper on other sites. So I thought Novel Use would be the answer... probably not. I guess I still don't quite understand Alamy market yet. Their vector collections are also a lot smaller than other sites as well so it might not be a place for me a the moment.

Other sites don't let the customer download the image, use it, take up to 3 months to report that they used it and then up to 45 days to pay after that. Images should cost a ton more at Alamy given the payment leeway they offer.

You've only got five files there! I had hundreds of files there over months before I had my first sale, though prices and my percentage was higher then. Also my files there are not on any micro.
