Title: Bigstock announces Free Photo Library
Post by: lisafx on January 24, 2009, 13:00
Bigstock just announced a free photo library.  Details here:

http://www.bigstockphoto.com/free-photo-library.html (http://www.bigstockphoto.com/free-photo-library.html)

From what I can see reading their announcement, this is geared toward website owners.  They can add the free collection to their website and offer the free photos to their clients/visitors, who can then search the BigStock paid image collection if they don't find what they want in the free section.

Hopefully this move is designed to bring in new paying image buyers.  123, StockXpert, and Dreamstime all manage to have free sites or sections without undercutting their paid collections.

But I would appreciate some further information about how this affects contributors.  Where did they get these free images?  Are they the free images of the week lots of us have donated over the years?

I have donated free images on other sites to boost my portfolio visibility and would probably do the same at BigStock if promoting the paid collection is the ultimate goal.

Anyone have more details about this?

Lisa,

I had never observed their free images were only there for a week.

There is nothing in their forum either.

Adelaide

Larry,

I saw that, but I think a previous announcement by email would have been nice, plus the "free images" is not really understood.

I've asked in their forum.

Adelaide

It's an Iframe. Not really usable for a designer. It's more like a glorified product placement then. A designer wants to incorporate the shot. As to freebies: forget it that it will drive your sales. Freebies are downloaded like hell, and I do it too. I never look at who made the shot. I heard the same from others.

Larry,

It doesn't explain what images are "free images".  As Lisa pointed out, unlike in other sites, BigStock's free images are (or at least were) free only for one week.

Now, if I once had put an image free in BigStock for one week, I would be upset to see it being totally free now.  And unless BigStock pays us for each free download - not likely to happen - I don't want to be part of this wonderful marketing strategy.

Adelaide

I googled and Found one of my Free Images that I never gave away! At least I do not remember ever giving it away.

It doesn't appear as free to me.  I see the credits per size.

It is listed on the google search as a free image, but not on the link. You could do the google search yourself and find it. Search for Milwaukee skyline.

Larry,

I think "Royalty free" may have trigged the result in Google.

Still no reply in the forum.

You may be correct on this. I do not know.

On the link posted previously, go to it again and at the top of the page click on "Back to image results" and you will see the original google page. My image is in the bottom row near the center.

Thanks!

Larry, I do see what you mean. in the google search under your image it does say free photos, but when I click that it takes me to your BigStock page, where you must purchase it for credits. Not sure why it says free in the search, but I don't think they are giving it away for free. I could be wrong though.

You and Adelaide are both most likely correct on this.

Thanks a bunch to both of you.

No further info on this that I can see.

I have no problem donating free photos in an effort to boost their marketing - I have done it on other sites.  I just would like to know the details and if they would link back to my paid portfolio, like on DT and 123.

Who knows, maybe they are using a completely different set of images and contributors are not invited to donate at all?

BigStock is now offering a free image library that you can easily place inside of your own website in 10 minutes.

Your site users will have access to hundreds of totally free images, downloadable from inside your website. If they decide to buy other images from BigStock, you'll earn 35% commission on every new customer sale.

It's a great value add for hosting sites, marketing sites, blog sites, community sites, art and design sites, creative sites, educational sites, etc.

Get started now: BigStockPhoto Free Photo Library

copied the above from my alert messages on bigstock.  they are offering commissions from resulting referral sales.  is that worthwhile?

That wave seems movements out of despair to sell. Obviously, that's bad for the photographers and, in my opinion, is bad for these agencies as well.

Hi all,

Another new development at BigStockPhoto (we're busy!) is the Free Photo Library. There have been some questions surrounding this.... I'll explain:

These are images we licensed specifically from the contributors for this use.  They are not coming at random from the BigStock collection. They are a separate collection fully licensed through the photo owners for this purpose. The shooters get some special consideration because their names and links to their portfolios are there for the world to see.

That said, if any of you are willing to contribute 10 or 15 images (not your lowest quality shots however, they should be reasonably good quality), please contact Liz at our Support Page and let her know the image IDs you would like to contribute. It could be great exposure, as the response to the Free Photo Library has been very good so far.

The concept behind this is of course, more eyeballs - and a small free images offering is a hallmark of almost all microstock sites as you know. Each of the images is only 72 dpi, 500px max size...  web resolution. Each has a small BigStock watermark, for recognition purposes.

That's it folks.. hope that clarifies things. Thanks again to all who contribute to BigStock.
