Image Quality is

25% camera
75% lens

so in essence spend more on a lens

nikon perhaps a d40x with a good lens

or

canon a d400 with a good lens

I would look at the Nikon D80, which gives you more possibilities than the D40 (more manual control, better viewfinder, autofocuses with AF-D lenses etc.).

The Olympus E-510 is also a nice possibility. The Zuiko kit-lenses are excellent, and you get in-body IS, live-view and a very efficient dust removal.

And what about the canon 400D?
What is the best, Nikon, Canon or olympus?

I believe Canon & Nikon are about the same, can't comment much about olympus.

Go to a shop, hold the camera (with a lens mounted) in your hands, if it feels right, it's good. For about the same price, I think they're about the same.

I have a 400D  8) used to have a 10D.

I think that it is more of 50/50.  A Canon EOS 1DS Mk III takes MUCH better images than a Canon EOS 10D (because it has a better sensor).

The main difference to me between camera bodies and lenses is that lenses are more permanent.  Bodies come and go every few years, but lenses last much longer.  So you will probably end up keeping your lenses longer than your bodies.

Well I am a Canon user. I believe 1000 Euro is about $1460 US dollars?

I would go the Canon Rebel xTi for about $500. And a Canon L series lens ... f2.8 24-70 for about $1000

Michaelo is right in essence with his equation, but for under 1000 Euro you would have trouble going below the xTi as the baseline.

The new Sony A700 gets an excellent review here:

http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/sony/dslr_a700-review/index.shtml

The sample studio shots are really excellent quality from iso 100 thru 400 and possibly iso 800.

It is considerably cheaper than the new Nikon D300.

All in all a very tempting proposition.

I would go with a used Canon 20D, if it still is too expensive go with a used Canon 10D. You can get them quite cheap now on e-bay. Then I would definetely buy the Canon 50mm 1.8. It is excellent quality for 100 Euro or Dollar, depends where you live. It's a must have, if you have no money but want a bit of quality.
After that you will still have a lot of money left.If you buy zoom lenses go with quality.Probably you will not have enough money left to get the 24-105L lense. The next would be the EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS which I suppose is good but not a lot cheaper than the 24-105. (You cannot use this one on the 10D).

I would either take Nikon or Canon, they are known to be good and you have more lenses available then other manufactors.

If I were in your shoes I would go for a used body , probably 400D , and 70-200 F4 , cheapest L lens but it has better quality than most lenses , including 24-70 and 24-105.
Its sharp enough even at f4 and I jus love that lens. If you find a good deal you could save for 50mm f/1.8 II prime.

But maybe 70-200 it not wide enough for you I don know , but thats just what I would do if I had 1000€ and no camera.

I vote for the A700, if it's in your budget. They have some noise reduction control problem, but it seem Sony have a new firmware for resolve this problem. very good D300 alternative.
