First you made an excellent choice whit this lens. Second, Nikon is always late when a new product come out. Their production is not a massive one and it's not unusual to have to wait between 3 or 4 months before a new product become available everywhere.

Try to reserve one in a store, sometimes the stores have it at release date but in very small quantity, so it's down to zero in a day or two

Have you bought that lens yet dotshock?  I've been considering buying one myself based on bjorn rorslett's analysis, but many observer's over at dpreview have expressed disappointment with image quality (softness as a result possibly of poor quality control).

Given the price I'd like to be sure before I make the purchase.

Any observations?

For now it's confusing. Many of the magazine give a very high average rating for this lens. Photozone.com included, but lately like you say many users given it bad analysis. But I'm pretty sure that it's kind of difficult to judge correctly whitout having specialized software who gives accurate results. The old 28-70 was very good and the new 24-70 is probably better or just barely as good of the old one.

I also look to make the move for the 24-70 to upgrade from my 18-70. So for myself it would be greater in any way. I give you the 24-70 review from photozone if you haven't see it already

http://www.photozone.de/Reviews/Nikkor%20/%20Nikon%20Lens%20Tests/236-nikkor-af-s-24-70mm-f28g-ed-review--test-report?start=1

You can see that the graph aren't enough high for the 24 and 40mm. I see the same thing in the magazine, do they are sold to Nikon, that's an other thing

Thanks Vonkara.  I'm not that concerned about wide angle distortions because these can be easily corrected in photoshop using the lens distortion filter (I use this all the time with a correction factor of 1.35 - 1.65 for my 35mm F2).

Sharpness across the field of view is of greater concern.

I might instead look for a used 28-70mm on ebay.  After all, the price is about $1,000 less.

IMO you have to take the user reviews with a grain of salt.  There always will be variability in the QC of lenses, especially new models.  People that buy the lens are either A) Happy as can be, it is everything that they hoped for and more, B) Not blown away, but satisfied, or C) Disappointed to extremely disappointed, either from setting the bar too high in their minds or getting a bad copy.  Chances are either A or B aren't going to write a review, it is C that is mad and does the writing.

As an example I was considering a Sigma 10-22mm for a long time.  All of the mag and pro reviews rate it very highly and some user reviews are great.  But the bulk of the user reviews are people PO'ed that they got a bad copy and the lens stinks, it took them .....x tries to get a good one and it still isn't that good....whatever.  But I also happen to know 3 people that own one, they all love em and consider it their favorite lens.  All 3 got good copies to begin with and their pictures back it up.  While Sigma may not have the greatest QC, reading user reviews makes you believe that 50%+ of lenses are bad, which I don't think is he case at all.  Maybe high as far as lenses go, but they would quickly go out of business if 50% of the products that they sell are defective.

I tend to avoid all user reviews unless it is a general forum of owners (such as the lenses' group in Flickr (most popular lenses have one)) or I have a relationship of some sort with the person (even chatting online), a review left at Amazon et al is just pointless to me as it doesn't represent an accurate cross section of owners.

I shoot Nikon and have found that they will make something great, get a lot of glowing reviews, and not produce nearly enough units for the market release. Why? I have no idea. I don't understand their production process or marketing tactics. I think it kind of sucks but we still buy their products,  right? I am gussing for them its better to release and create demand then to wait until they have enough units to go around.

A little over a year ago Nikon released the 18-200 VR lens. It is a great lens for what I need but I probably waited 6 months before it was available through B&H and other retailers.   I could have bought it sooner if I wanted buy from resellers (like on Ebay) who were selling them for $200-300 above asking price because they knew everybody wanted it.

Your best bet if you don't want to pay hundreds more is to get on every waiting list you can. Once they release the next round you will probably have a better chance of getting one.

The Canon 24-70mm is my workhorse lens, and I can imagine that Nikon's version is of comparable quality. The only lens I'd consider replacing it with would be either a 24-105mm or 28-300mm, sacrificing sharpness for flexibility.

I think buying used is the way to go - in both bodies and lenses.
