What are you thoughts of a fair price to pay (Craigs List) for either the Canon 20D or the Rebel Xti / 400D?

Also any other thoughts on the 20D as my first DSLR body would be greatly appreciated.

I have read everything that DPreview has to say but I want to know from the people here at MSG ...

Thanks.

Mark

Why don't you just check on eBay?

Place a watch on a dozen or so auctions (from individuals, not stores) and you'll have your "fair price" answer within a week.

I had already thought of that ... but there is a difference between what people are currently paying on eBay and what people here on MSG ... THINK that they should pay. I am asking people here on MSG for their opinion. Thank you for yours ...

I have been watching various models on "Craigs List" as I will most likely buy my next camera locally.

The second part of my question of my post was my question about what is currently thought about the 20D in comparison to the 400D / Xti ...

That question still remains ...

My advice would be to get the 20D (or even a 30D) over the 400D. One advantage is having the thumbwheel on the back, to change aperture and exposure compensation. You might well prefer the bigger body too.

I've shot with a 350D, and also held a 10D and a 40D before - later switching to holding a 400D....man it felt like a toy compared to the magnesium bodied Canons.  If you want a profressional feel and higher durability, go with the metal body.  If you want to save money, or something more lightweight...go with the 400D.  I still need to decide, I'm in the same boat.  I want to get my own DSLR soon too.

Honestly I think the durability issue of the X0D line up compared to XX0D (rebels) is overrated. I have had the 10D, 20D and now I have 40D but if I was buying today I would buy the new 450D. My brother had the 300D and now 400D and I think it will last him just as long, I would never expect to physically break the camera.

The higher line has some nice features (like Phildate said the thumbwheel) but I feel for stock photo the 450D would be awesome (if noise is low at ISO 100,200). It is cheap, it has a enough pixels for XL at iStock and it has pretty much all the features of 40D (except the speed).

Anyway, with that said, I am waiting for the new 5D ;D
(But that is because I have plenty of money to blow and my time is more precious than the cost of a camera).

I dunno...to me, it's like holding a pellet gun (bb gun pistol) compared to holding a real Colt 45.  You just feel like you've got a serious piece of equipment in your hands, where with the Rebels they feel like childs play.  I'm not knocking them though - it's all personal preference.  The smaller size is much better for travel, and much more convenient.

I'm going to have to figure out what kind of bag to get, that will give me fast access to my 20D + Battery grip + attached lens.  Not sure if they make anything like that.
