why don't you upgrade to a 5D instead?

Oooo...  how much will this baby cost?  It's time for me to get a DSLR!

Apart from the 10Mpix, is there any significant improvement over 350D/XT?

Adelaide

It'll be a great stock tool.  10Mpx isn't enough of a leap from 8Mp to make me keen on going to a plastic body, but if you're on a 300D this is a good upgrade.

Not so keen on the loss of the second LCD, I imagine battery life will suffer for that..

The anti-dust feature looks nice.  Be interesting to see if that flows into their prosumer and pro models later this year / next year.

I think this is a marketing responce to the Nikon D200, I don't see it as a massive improvement in any technical area appart from the dust reduction, and they were probably working on that anyway.  Traditionally Canon roll out new tech like that in lower end models to test the water, so nothing strange there.

Not for me, I'm happy with my 20D/10D/1D(mk1) mix.  I'm still saving my pennies for a 1DmkII.

Interesting - so when does the 30Di come out then? Is the sensor better than the 8,p or just bigger?  Sensor cleaning is a postive.

a bigger sensor should = better sensor as there is less chance of sensor noise

The 400D has a smaller sensor than the 30D and more MP so it should have more noise.

But the sensor is only marginally smaller:

30D: 22.5 x 15.0 mm
400D: 22.2 x 14.8 mm

Hopefully, technology will help with reducing the noise on this

Marginally smaller yes but with 2 million more pixels crammed in. It will be interesting to see if they can match the 30D noise levels. Hope they do because I would like to see a 10-12mp 40D without additional noise released soon.

And how does it compare with 350D, since it's supposed to be an update of this one, if I understand it right?

Adelaide

4 main improvements:

1. 10.1 mp v 8.2 mp
2. noise reduction
3. self-cleaning sensor
4. bigger LCD

Lovely camera. Won't upgrade from 350 XT 'cause too little motivation. 10.1 mp will still not get me into the XL sizes on most sites (12 mp needed). Bigger LCD don't mean much to me, but self-cleaning sensor and noise reduction is a big bonus.

I have a feeling the noise reduction enhancement would at best only compensate for the noise brought by the upgrade from 8.2Mp to 10.1 Mp.

This is a quote from The Luminous Landscape website on a preliminary evauation of the 400D (@ http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/rebel%20xti.shtml):

"If the tradeoff was increased noise in XTi images I would regard this as a marketing driven update. But, my initial testing shows the XTi to be as noise free at most ISOs as its predecessor, so the extra resolution will be welcome."

So at first glance, it seems that there is no additional noise on the 400D. That is good news.

Any idea of prices?

I had chosen XT to be my first DSLR.  Now I wonder if I should pick XTi.

Whatever the price may be it's a better idea to hold off until the full reviews are out and regular people have had enough time to use the camera and post their feedback.

Not familiar with XT XTi, in Europe I think they call them 350D and 400D although the 400D is not released yet. Difference is 8mp and 10mp.

Just thought I would mention that I bought a 350D but the Charger quit after a month and I am waiting five weeks for a replacement from Canon, not impressed with their "service" in Europe. Service used to be good with the Pro Cameras but they don't consider the 350D/400D "Pro" Cameras, so no service locally.

Another difference is the "Lower priced" Cameras are made in China and others are made in Japan. I've heard other stories also like the Case cracking when putting on the Tripod.

Just something to consider when buying equipment. I would rather buy a 10D or 20D used than a new Camera made in China. Cheers, Joe
