Title: Canon rumor site, new medium format camera
Post by: sharpshot on August 06, 2012, 04:09
I like this rumour of a Canon medium format camera.  It would need all new lenses and would be huge but hopefully it would encourage what I want, a mirrorless medium format camera.  I think Fuji are most likely to make that and if Canon are entering this market, they might be working on something.

Yes and no. Im still using the HD4, for commissioned work, its cumbersome, slow and need all sorts of softwares. Not your ideal stock-camera at all, besides, the latest generation of dslrs, are so good, its not really any need for, MF, unless studio and product shoots.

Real simple, it may use an EF mount, but I don't think it will use EF lenses. Here's why...

In order to get a large enough image to cover a bigger sensor, you will need to move the lens further from the focal plane. In which case the lens will not focus properly.

It is possible that some sort of adapter with an element can be used to adapt EF lenses, but what does that do for image quality?

I'm very skeptical that an EF or EF-S will ever work because of the focus issues.

They'll definitely need new lenses but perhaps they can make some nice pancake primes that aren't too bulky?  The problem I see is the big mirror, don't know why they wouldn't use an electronic viewfinder?  Remember the Pentax 6x7?  If they could shrink that down a bit, I might be interested.  Full frame might be good but you get a different look with a much bigger sensor, just like FF looks different to APS.

probably a price factor, an electronic viewfinder similar to the Penta 67, would cost a lot. Also they have to price this one carefully, since it cant compete with the hassies and Mamiya, MF cameras. I might be interested, especially with super quality optics. Im always interested in great optics.

Why would an electronic viewfinder be more expensive than the big mirror and pentaprism?  Panasonic, Olympus, Fuji, Nikon and Sony all have relatively cheap cameras with a decent electonic viewfinder.  It might cost more for a larger sensor but so does the mirror and pentaprism.

It takes a lot more electronics for MF, take the meter prism for the HD4, cost a fortune, here in Sweden, 2K.

Hassleblad isn't a cheap brand, I'm sure Canon can do it cheaper than them.  There's a big gap between FF cameras and the cheapest medium format.  If the rumour is true, wont Canon be looking to fill that void?

You can read here their take that this is a misunderstanding and it's really a rumor that a high megapixel FF is coming out not a MF.

I'm all ears about a new Canon high MP FF body.

Me too... I just hope it's based on "5D" and not "1D" to keep the price reasonable (=Nikon D800-ish)

Ah ha for the same reason I was skeptical.

Yes High MP FF camera, interesting. The response also point out the other problem or fact of nature, the sensors are out resolving the lenses. Same reason why people go from a 12MP crop to 24MP FF and find their images are softer and they have focusing issues. (made up numbers example) Because now they can see the flaws that were softer in the lower resolution images.

Be prepared for a whole new flock of "front focus" issues and the camera labeled as a dust magnet, because we will be able to see the tiniest flaws.  :o

Yea but they don't have glass for MF sensors. What are they going to do - make adapters for Mamyia and Hasselblad lenses?

Sounds more like wishfull thinking, not a rumor.
A high MP FF is more likely.

If they were truly going to the trouble of developing a medium format, they would also go to the trouble of developing lenses for it.

But in that case there would be lots of rumors. They can't just pop up with a MF and 2-3 lenses just like that, can they.
Of course I would be very interested in a MF and 2-3 primes for studio and landscape. I just don't see it happening.

Get the pentax or mamiya then, they are probably less than what Canon would charge.
