I have been looking around for a little business opportunity, and just found out about drop shipping.
Not sure if you guys know about this. This is where a wholesaler lets you sell their stuff - on eBay for instance - and pays you the difference between the sale price and the wholesale price.
They handle all the stuff, postage etc.
I joined one group in Hong Kong and the Canon gear was about 20% less than the prices on eBay.
Anyone else got any experience in this?
Might be a way just to get cheap gear for yourself, since there is no minimum purchase numbers.

I'd be interesting in reading up on this

Is it actually cheaper after calculating in shipping? If you look on ebay you'll see a lot of these drop shipping operations that sell the item for about 20% less but then the shipping costs more than makes up for the "savings."
-
yes it is. this is buying from the people the drop shippers buy from. so you are saving one set of margins.
-
There's an article on it here:

Watch out! Whilst it can be legitimate, there are scams involved.

check these prices in your country and let me know:
Sony A100 (with DT 18-70 lens) $US749
Canon EOS 5D body only $US2454
Canon xti (single lens kit) $US755

Well those are only around a 13% savings on B&H's prices. Not including the large difference in shipping cost and the fact that you don't get a US warranty. I think I'll stick with US companies that I know I can get my money back from if something goes wrong.

The cheapest prices I found. (In Germany)
The Sony: 643€, ~ 844 $
Canon 5D: 2227,50€ ~ 2926$
CanonXTI 660€ ~ 867$

Here are the cheapest prices that I could find.
Sony A100: $670 (bhphotovideo.com)
Canon 5D: $2789 (Buydig.com)
Canon XTi: $680 (bhphotovideo.com)
So I was able to find both the Sony A100 and Canon XTi for cheaper.
I am a little skeptical on the price on the Canon 5D. Is that after rebate?

There is a thread (I won't mention the originator) on DP Review that passes on the discount code "show" prices at B & H. All of the products available at the show price are currently starting with the prefix "PSJAN". I just ordered my 1DS MKII. The show special code is PSJAN07002 which is $50 cheaper than CAE1DS2.
B & H caught on to the fact that folks like myself have learned about this. If you want to see what the specials are, type PSJAN07 and then a three digit code (like 001, 002, 003, 004, etc.) to see the show special price.
This special has been going on for about a month and a half and may change at a moments notice. The previous code was PSDEC.....
Also, as fair warning, B & H caught on to people hearing about this - you used to be able to search by just typing PSJAN into the search area to see what comes up.
Don't tell anyone ;)

I've used newegg for all sorts of electronics gear. It's a thrill that they're getting into camera equipment now. Not everything there is the cheapest.. but I'd say about half of the electronics stuff I've ever ordered has come from there as they've had the best deals. The 3-day shipping certainly doesn't hurt how I feel about them either.

Are you doing this through Doba?
