There isn't just one right answer and that dictates that all of us should hold the same views or opinions.  :)

In a perfect world, yes.
But in the actual web, influencers if not everyone are trying their best to dictate what's right for us. From opinions to reviews to info. It is sometimes hard to separate biased to actual helpful knowledge any more.

:/

The best way to navigate the sea of information is to know that each and every blog/influencer is selling something, so you need to look at the facts rather than their opinion.  For instance, I have heard sooooooooo many people say over the years that one of the best lenses to buy is the 50mm.  I have a 50mm lens and I RARELY use it and will be giving it away to my son soon.  So, figure out what YOU need (what are you going to be using it for?) and go from there.

Wait, you have a Nifty 50 and don't like it? I still don't own one, seems like something else always comes first. Like a 24mm TS-E or a 135mm f/2.

Which 50mm do you have and why are you unhappy with it?

I have two Canon 5D4's. I fell and can't lift them so I didn't shoot in over a year. I just bought the Iphone 11pro and this phone camera blows the Canon away! Everything I am shooting is getting accepted. The color right out of the phone for stock is fantastic. It even shoots in the dark without noise!

Some days it's much harder to spot Apple fanboys, not this one. LOL

Although maybe there's a sale of the two unused 5D IVs coming up for forum members, since you can't use them anymore? Not me, I'm still using crop cameras, but there are plenty of people here who could use your used cameras for a good price? I mean, especially since the 5Ds have been replaced by an iPhone?

I just have the basic $125 version of the 50mm.  But it could have been the L-series and I'd feel the same.  It's just not the focal length I tend to use for the type of photos I shoot most (landscape/nature).  I think I have an aversion to prime lenses because I also have a 100mm macro lens that is collecting a lost of dust as well.  I use three main lenses....the 16-35mm, the 24-105mm, and the 100-400mm.  I'm using a 5D4 body.

Hi Everyone

This has been an interesting conversation thread to read, indeed cameras vs. smartphones :)
Well it is kind of hard in comparing the two and speaking of lenses, I wanted a tip from the professionals, and it seems like there are experienced photographers here 8)

I am looking for a camera that shoots photos as a mirror from the eye. Because I find that even though the settings are amended if camera or smartphone it tends to not look the same as if I where looking at the image. Especially making landscape or nature photos. I suppose that a good lens with a wide zoom effect in distance but also a camera with certain features is to be looked out for. So, what are the experts suggestions here?

Thank you in advance and sincerely

The phone is 12 MP and the 5D4 is 30.1 MP, so you're not getting the same in resolution.  It does NOT blow the Canon away.  It's a nice phone camera, but not a replacement for a dslr.  And according to this comparison article https://digital-photography-school.com/iphone-11-pro-versus-the-canon-5d-mark-iv/ [nofollow] they say, "As for noise and sharpness, I dont notice any issues when viewing the photos at a normal viewing size. But viewing the images large (which can be done here) shows significant noise and lack of clarity in all of the iPhone images."  So, you're not getting images in the dark without noise.  You're just not viewing them large enough to see it.

My first photos submitted to SS was with a Canon PowerShot sx540 super zoom which I'd just bought. They accepted some but rejected most photos taken with it so I got a Sony NEX 5n mirrorless later on which was fine. I still got rejections but no so many. My Sony also takes the old OM Olympus 50mm lens (with an adapter) that came with my Olympus OM10 which I've had since the 80's. I even used film photos taken with it & scanned into the PC to get accepted on Alamy stock as they didn't accept shots taken with the powershot.

On a popular youtube photography channel they were asked: What camera would you recommend for $500 or less? They answered you're better of getting one of the newer smartphones They actually compared a new iphone with a canon R5 by shooting the same scene and even in the dark (zoomed into the photo) there was hardly any difference.

comparison -- the iPhone 12 vs pro dSLR

https://www.iphoneincanada.ca/news/iphone-12-vs-6000-pro-dslr-test-by-canadian-photographer-video/

Nice photos and testing the truth vs the hype.

"At the end of the day, a phone cannot replace a professional camera for the most part."

But for the original question, for $500, hey wait, iPhone 12 is over $1,000?

Seems like year after year, we read how the DSLR will be replaced by the phone. Hasn't happened yet and won't for a long time, not for professional or high quality, images. Maybe for Microstock, but even there, it's tricky and there will be rejections.

My one reason that isn't changing, because of focal plane: iPhone 12 = 12 MP sensor (1.7 photo sites), 26 mm-equivalent f/1.6 (note, wide) 12 MP 1/1.9"

Price comparable camera Canon T8i = Total megapixels: 25.80, Sensor size:    22.3 x 14.9 mm

You can't fool Mother Nature.

Not Yet with a sensor that's 1/3rd of an APS-C and the software is creating the perception.

A clear example of the fact that a phone cannot be compared to a camera in any case. After all, the camera has one or two functions to shoot and take pictures, the phone still has many different parallel and important functions, therefore, in order for the phone to be compared with a DSLR camera, it will have to cost like two or three cameras, since the phone is also smaller than the camera and the quality like a SLR camera, it is more difficult to achieve at this size.
