Is megapixel important for stock stills?l

As a buyer I like to have the option to crop and maybe just use part of an image. Not always, but it can influence a buying decision.

For the same reason, in some agencies you have the choice of a size filter for your search to only get xl or xxxl file results.

And I am sure some agencies also have size as one of the many factors included in their search algorithms. By how much is everyones guess and these factors are probably weighted differently every time they update their system.

Also as a producer I sometimes like to crop into a file for whatever reason.

I really like having 42MP. In bad light situations, I can also downsize for a better looking image and stillhave 20MP for upload.

So for me size does matter.

But if you are starting out, like others have said, any decent camera will do, I think 16MP would be great, still allows you to downsize a bit to 12 MP and still have an XL image.

I shoot with many different cameras and some even just have 12MP.

For sales it is more important to do proper research what content is in demand, to shoot with great image composition, great light and post processing and then make sure you have the right keywords.

And to upload regularly, preferably every week, because nothing matters more than telling the agency „I am still here“.

I got my Sony used for 1100 euros by the way, I usually buy my cameras like 2 years late and then look for bargain deals or refurbished models. I really don‘t need to have the newest model at 4000 euros when they just come out.
