Title: Lytro Illum Camera
Post by: Anja02 on June 10, 2014, 03:38
Does anyone have or know anything about the new Lytro Illum camera? It doesn't capture pixels, it captures rays of light.

Do you know if it would be acceptable for stock photography? The demo I saw looked amazing.

However, concerned about JPEG quality, artifacts, etc

It's interesting but I don't see the refocusable output having much of a role in stock. Maybe one day. As for the image quality if you reduce it to an ordinary jpg ... no idea, so far I haven't seen anything from it bigger than small web size,  but a traditional camera has got to be a cheaper way of getting the same quality.

"One drawback is low resolution: Users will be able to convert Lytro camera's proprietary image into a regular JPEG file, at a desired focal plane. The resulting image has 1080 × 1080 pixels – roughly 1.2 megapixels, and only 0.78 megapixels for a traditional 4x6 print.[28]"

I am still waiting for my Canon 44.7 MP - starting to feel it will never come out...

Awesome technique. Could become a big thing in website designs.
