Took me by surprise, the current lineup - in the upper echelons - is very close to each other now.

I guess they mean to really bring it to Canon, with the D3x presumably coming soon too.

Canon is sweating on a couple of fronts atm it sounds like with Nikon covering thier entire lineup quite suddenly and Sony gaining a bit of market share at the bottom end of things.

I think Canon stand alone in the dark whit... a new 5D in his hand. Maybe 16mpx whit all the sensor performance the old 5D was having.

That would make the Nikon lineup a bit conservative whit many 10-12mpx bodies and a hypothetic D3x whit 24mpx. The D3 sensor perform very well, but do it will stand in front a new 5D... will see how the D700 specs will do in the market I guess

I think most people stopped worrying so much about MP after the 10/12 benchmark was hit.

Either way, the numbers say that Canon has lost market share to Nikon and Sony in the last year, we'll have to see how they do over the next fiscal year.

It's official now. I readed the specs from a french forum. No such surprise except for the boring 95% frame coverage. What they was thinking... some lazy engineers probably.

What's hit me first it's the specs looks more like the D200 than the D300, whit this 95% coverage and it's 5fps, one less than the D300 at 6fps.

This D700 is not what I was waiting for. Seriously, more than 3000$ for a D3 sensor in a D200 body? Not a good upgrade for the moment

Though it's only little things I will wait

why would they bring this out without a full size sensor?

It is a full size sensor. The D3's sensor.

It's on the UK and US sites now and the press release has been made.

It's the D3 sensor stuck in a D300 body with nearly identical specs to the D300 at an MSRP of $3000 American.

You need to check the details:

- It's not a D200 but a D300 body (the difference is rather big, start with the LCD)
- fps can be increased to 8 with the grip
- It's got dust removal which the D3 hasn't
- It has to systems for camera leveling (grid and horizon)
- It's only a 95% VF, but that's probably one of the most important cost-saving measures. A 100% VF requires a lot of manual adjustments to get correct.
- It's the only full frame camera on the market with a built-in flash
- The price difference from the D300 is the equivalent of just one good quality lens

Canon and Sony will launch their own FF cameras later this year, but for professional photographers with Nikon lenses, this is a no-brainer.

Hard to justify the extra cost of the D3 when the D700 has all the IQ elements, is more portable when you need it and has some dust filtering.

Still over twice the weight of my current body though ;)

I've been praying for this ever since I bought my D300 and MB-D10 last year. I made sure to buy FX glass and aside from my one wide angle I stayed away from all of the expensive DX lenses. It's a perfect 2 camera system aside from the right-angle viewfinders and wide angle lenses.

D@mn it!

And I've just taken the plunge and bought a D3.

Mind you, it's an awesome beast. If the D700 performs the same it'll be excellent value for money.

Hahaha. Yah I'd be sooo upset having that ratty D3 to deal with when you could have a D700  :P

Now if everyone will step this way I'll be taking bets on the announce dates for the D3x and D90, any takers?

Reminds me, didn't we see some black lenses on the sidelines at EURO 08? And not all grey lenses

"Only"  5 frames per seconds. 5 frames FX is quite a lot compared to 6 frames dx.    Anyway, You better tell those tomatoes and limes to stand still on the white then:)
