Is there a lot of rumors going around these days or is it just me??
...On speaking with Nikon [in country unnamed], this came to light with various questions - they already had development plans for a new Nikon digital rangefinder with approx 48mmx48mm size sensor inside it, tentatively called the “MX” format, the camera is not to dissimilar to the older film Mamiya 6 camera philosophy.
The new camera will be backward compatible with DX and FX lenses (via mount adaptor), therefore the lens factor (based on using a FX lens) will be worked out like this:...

According to their BIG ad in Rangefinder, they will be releasing more details next month and having a big reveal at WPPI in February.
Other rumours suggest a leaked document lists "MX" on a list beside DX and FX (Nikon formats) with a row that might be pixel sizes... 6380x6380. A 40 mp camera!

Ironically, the bigger then sensor, the less demand on lens quality. So by getting a bigger sensor, you get less fringing and lens problems in general. Hassy lenses seem so much better, but if you know the physics, it is very mush easier to make good lenses for big sensors, then making good lenses for small sensors (full-frame for example).

Hm, not sure thats quite right. Doesn't take mp into account. Check the current pics of 5D II (which is FF) and 24-105. Looks like lens is becoming the problem. I expect all the major players to start announcing better lenses soon.

That's because of the increased pixel density, not because of the sensor size. The whole point with a larger sensor is that you can achieve the same or higher amount of pixels with a lower pixel density, an advantage that transforms into less information density through the lens as well.

Nikon Watch's source continues: The sensor will be similar in design to the D3 sensor and the camera itself will be able to use existing FX (full frame) lenses via an adapter. This will give a crop factor of 0.5x -- pop on a 50mm lens and it will act like a 25mm lens. It will also shoot rectangular pictures by cropping the image from the sensor, which means that you can choose either landscape or portrait orientation without actually moving the camera. Finally, the camera wil be cheap. Not D60 cheap, but a lot less than the current $40,000 offering from Hasselblad."
Even more good reason to stick with full-format lenses instead of DX lenses - at least you can use them if you inherit just enough to buy this body. I'm sure the MX lenses will be $3000+ each, and there won't be any 3rd party lenses for an entirely new mount - at least not for a bit. The square format is very VERY exciting, I love square compositions - and tons of room to crop to more standard formats.
I must say, though, that you will need to SERIOUSLY upgrade to a high-end PC or Mac with multiple processors and at least 8GB of RAM. And the hard drive space will be ridiculous, might as well invest in the hot-swappable hard drive bay with several 1TB drives. Oh, and a 30" or larger monitor to really see the details.

wow.. exciting news. Can't wait til it comes out. .. not that I am a Nikon fan, but it might bring something fancy out from the Canon end :)

Only thing is it will cost a lot. Someone said the price will be cheap. That mean under 40 000$ LOL. Because it will be in the same category as the Hasselblad's. And the only thing I was asking for was a 16mpx full frame. ::) Though let see what will happening the 22th October
