Title: Question: ball head maximum weight
Post by: madelaide on December 23, 2010, 19:50
I'm buying a tripod and a ball head tomorrow.

I've red people sy (can't remember if here) than Manfrotto's heads have a very conservative maximum weight, that is, one rated at 4kgs max would easily tolerate more.  Is it true?

My current system is a 400D (510g) with the heaviest lens being the 100mm macro (625g), but plans are that I will buy the 100-400mm (1360g) or something similar soon.  Thus my stuff wouldn't weight more than 2kg (or 4.4 lb).  I suppose people may let an allowace, so am I correct to assume that a model suitable for 4kg would be more than enough?  I would imagine that lens physical length would also matter, but I see no reference to that in the manufacturer's sites (checked Manfrotto and Benro).

That head would be fine, just remember to use the tripod collar of the bigger lens on the head when you get one, it balances it better.

Hi M,

You might check out The Ultimate Ball head by Acretech. They back their heads for 10 years. If anything goes wrong they will fix it or replace it for ten years. I have had mine 6 and they are replacing it from wear so I get a brand new one. Just a thought here is the link www.acratech.net (http://www.acratech.net)

Good Luck,
Jonathan

Jonathan,

I've heard of Acratech before and a friend in the USA has one of theirs, however they are not available in Brazil.

Hi Donding,

No it was a camera I was looking at for x-mas. I have a Gitzo that is super light and sturdy when I use it, I love it. There ws a camera by Sony I was looking at but after the test at the camera store I wasn't as impressed as I was with the article. No camera gear at all this year ???

Cheers,
Jonathan
