After only 4 months or so, they have upgraded the 6mp sensor to 10mp along with a few other changes.

This takes the Canon 400D head on at a lower price point.

common canon - bring out your wild card and show us the 1ds mark III ... and maybe a new 5d with weather sealing and 16mp

I would personally rather see the replacement for the 20D/30D series.

And I think that this is great news, even though I am a Canon fan, because it just creates good competition and will keep prices low.

I think Canon needs to bring something out soon.  Loyal customers may stay with them but new customers will go with Nikon as the cameras are newer etc.  once you are with a system, you are less likely to change.  You therefore lose out on future sales.  With the large growth in the DSLR market, you cant afford to miss the boat.

I dont think a new 1Ds will do this. they need a new 30D or a cut price 5D.

2 days until the PMA.. maybe something will show up there... but i am loosing doubt as you would think something would have 'leaked' out by now.

The D40X is a real killer, and Nikon currently has almost 50% of the Japanese DSLR market. The reason seems to be that both the D40 (old version) and the D80 runs circles around the EOS 400D and 30D.

The competition is really tough now, and even Olympus will probably increase their market shares with their new cameras and lenses. I have both Nikon and Olympus, so I'm a happy camper  ;D

Wow, what a statement!

I can tell that you are a die-hard Nikon fan.

I do have an F-mount Fuji S3, but no Nikons, and an Olympus E-1 for rainy days and travel. For lenses, I would actually prefer Canon, since they have fast primes that I prefer to use. However, if I should choose a camera body today, the features and ergonomics of the Nikons are impossible to ignore, particularly the D40/80/200 trio.

One could always argue that the Canons have better high-ISO performance, but the difference is very small now, so ergonomics, features and lenses will be important to many. Nikon's amateur lenses also seem to be excellent value.

The change in the Japanese market is rather dramatic, since Canon had a very comfortable lead until last autumn. However, neither the 30D nor the 400D brought much new, except for the anti-dust in the 400. This is a big contrast to the three Nikons, which were all completely new cameras when they were released, all of them within a period just exceeding 12 months.

The recent launch of the 10mp D40X, which will supplement but not replace the D40, and the apparently excellent 55-200mm AF-S VR, just strengthens Nikon's lead here. I must say I'm very tempted to buy the D40X as a compact backup for my S3, even if it can't AF with most of my lenses.

Oh... and I would have chosen a 1D3 over a D2X any day. It's a better camera. But for the big picture, those cameras are completely uninteresting. The volume and the profits are in the lower price ranges. That's probably also the reason why Nikon is pushing so hard with consumer cameras and lenses, and more or less, at least in my view, ignoring the pro segment.
