Title: Sigma or Canon lens kit?
Post by: stokfoto on February 24, 2007, 09:27: I got a Sigma 18-50 lens kit for my Canon 350D but I am thinking of changing it for a Canon 18-55 lens kit.I assume there won't be a huge difference in terms of qualtiy I could obtain.but unfortunatey it's not within my budget to go upper level glasses for the moment.
what do you think guys is it worth changing it? which one do you think is better?
would the lens hood that came with the sigma lens fit the canon?

All the kit lenses are so called "cheapies" and should be avoided.

Now it seem I'd better start saving up for a decent lens like the famous 17-40 in the mean time I have to make my kit lenes work more and more in order to get rid of them soon...

Canon doesn't make an 18-135? Did you mean the 28-135? I have both (the 24-105) and I like both. Sometimes a "good" Kit lens can beat a bad copy of an L lens. ;-) I find mine to be about equal so far, after about five years of use. The L is a better build, weather sealed and Fluorite lens. It should be slightly more durable and brighter. Like f/4 instead of f/5.6

Here's the ticket to the difference. The 24 costs about double what the 28-135 costs, and for that, I'd be sold as you are. Why spend $800 more for something that's pretty equal in image quality.

I still won't buy any EF-S kit lens.

I've used it on a crop body before and the quality is decent.

OH it's an EF-S small wonder. Make that why spend $1000 more. I don't have any experience with that lens, obvious since I didn't even know it exists. Now I'm working on skeptical that it's as good as 24-105 L. But lets not quibble. If someone is happy, and gets good images, that's what it takes.

As usual the way Canon keeps the price down on the Kit lenses, is by leaving things out. Which probably means more lens for the money. No case, no hood, pretty much just a lens. Higher price lenses you get all the accessories, which could be a better value, if someone wants and needs all those things.

Anyway, for a $499 lens it looks pretty good.
