Title: Sony announces full-frame point-and-shoot RX1 at $2800
Post by: Kone on September 13, 2012, 18:40
Sony is the first to have managed to pack a full frame sensor (24MP) into a point and shoot body. The camera is equipped with a fixed 35mm f/2.0 Carl Zeiss lens.
With a pixel count of 24 million, the RX1 can shoot RAW along with a burst mode of 5 frames per second. It features pretty much all DSLR functionality.
This is exactly the camera I've wanted for years, if only I could switch the lenses too (or 20 mm fixed).
Biggest downfall for me is the price tag at $2800.
I have Nikon equipment and I will wait and see what Nikon and Canon will say about  this revolutionary decision.

Sony is always high. The same sensor is packed in the new Nikon D600, 700$ cheaper.

This camera is doomed before starting to be delivered. I believe the real price is max. $1500

I think this camera will sell well.  It has no competition at the moment.  Street photographers will love it, that seems to be very popular at the moment.  Pro's that can't take a DSLR in to some places will want one.  It could be a good travel camera, for people that don't mind just using one lens.  I often look at the forums on dpreview and I'm amazed how many people pre-order cameras, knowing the price crashes after a few months.  I'm sure lots of them will be wanting this.

If they could make this with a built in electronic viewfinder and interchangeable lenses, I would be interested.  I'm pleased that Sony and Fuji are making different cameras from the usual Canon/Nikon stuff.

This camera is making Canon 5Dmk3 a cheap camera ( considering the $3500 launch price )....

You are right, Sony and Fuji only way to resist on the high end cameras market is to produce such type of cameras. But the $2800 price tag for such a camera i believe is far too much.

$2800 is for the people that have to have the latest camera at any price.  I'm sure it will be much lower after a few months.  It's great that people will pay extortionate prices for new cameras.  Makes them cheaper for those that can wait for lower prices.  They also find all the problems with the camera that can be fixed with updated firmware.

The Fujifilm X100 was a crazy price when it launched but now it's about 40% lower.

bought the sony rx100 2 weeks ago, 20mp 1" sensor. A lot of fun to have a little camera again (as opposed to a900) and the difference in image quality (in good light) between it and the a900 with zeiss 24-70 is much less than expected (I could submit some as stock without an issue) at $2200 cheaper I'm happy as I am :)

Yes, I think it will sell.
Reporters who want to stay discrete will love it.
