If you can put it in your check-in luggage it will be x-rayed. For me they opened suite case and checked. I haven't tried to check it in without bag like stroller. It might work too. Call airlines and ask them what you should do.

but why would you need to carry on the tripod. i usually carry on the fragile and important equipment (camera, lenses, film, mem cards, flashmeter, etc) . tripod is not going to be damaged by handling, and should better be in your cargo. in some countries you may be disallowed too, as this can be considered a likely weapon, considering that even a camping knife is disallowed in certain countries. this could delay your flight, why cause it a hassle for nothing. some security won't take no for an answer, and remember you're in foreign soil.
my experience is the lest hassle you cause airport security , or any foreign security , the better and more enjoyable your trip will be. Dubai especially. Be aware of religious protocol, eg. don't point a camera at women with hijabs, don't look at them, nor wish them, just move aside to let them pass UNNOTICED,etc...  even if Dubai is supposed to be the most "liberal" in that area.
P.S.
and brush up on your Arabic (shukran, essalamalaykum/alyka/alyki, la,mashallah,etc..). it'll go a long way.

Perseus , sorry about my English , obviously I wasn't clear enough.
I wasn't thinking about taking the tripod with me in the plane , only camera and lenses , and leave the tripod in the cargo that will go bellow.

So I guess  that's OK ?

Anyway I will stay at my friends house  , he plays some sport professionally there for a year now  so he already warned me about "protocols" in Dubai and even promised my mother
that he will be responsible for me  ;D .

I always take my tripod in the checked-in luggage, but when I have only a carry-on (domestic flights), it goes with me without any prolem.  But then we don't have such neurotic rules about carry-on luggage.

certainly, in cargo.  the restriction in cargo are mostly explosives (serious) ,and chemicals that could
explode or implode in the pressurized cargo cabins (spray cans, etc) or toxic stuff found in household cleaners,etc..

I guess airport personnel will know the difference between a tripod and a AK-47. They'll had photographers passing through before.  ;D

have a nice trip!

I usually am well above the 7kg allowed hand luggage with laptop, cam, lenses, USB disks, so the tripod has to go in the checked luggage. Make sure to use a reinforced case because the last few years, I presume they let elephants run over the checked luggage. Bahrain is the worst for damage, Abu Dhabi and Qatar are slightly better.

it's not a case of whether it resembles an AK47. ever tried carrying on a knife? especially on flights stopping over in those countries that are high security alert? we're not talking about flying from DFW or  DEN to LAX. we're talking about crossing international borders.

good point, and it's getting lighter each decade. remember when it used to be what? 18 kg or 15 kg???

if you're serious about that  ;D
i think it's due to the heavier traffic as Dubai is where most of the jet set from Abu Dhabi and Qatar go . so they chuck your luggage instead of taking the time to gently transfer from the carts to the cargo cabins

Last time I flew I had a my camera equipment in one hand luggage and my tripod as a second piece of hand luggage.  I had the tripod just free out in the open not in any bag and didn't run into any problems.

Tripod is OK in you checked-in baggage.

Ok to wrap it together with your clothes.

Remember to remove the head and wrap it separately as bumps during handling and travel might damage it.

Bye!

I generally remove the head and put that in my camera bag (hand luggage) and then have the tripod in the checked-in bag. I've never had my hand luggage weighed so I tend to put any 'heavy but small' lumps in there to maximise what I can put in the main bag.

good point. completely forgot about that. yes, if you have one of those manfrotto ball-tripod head that are susceptible to damage, YES, remove that and put that in your carry on luggage.
i was more concern that with a large tripod, you may be told by the airstwardess to let them hang on to it until the end of the flight.  depending on whether you get a seat with ample space or overhead storage  for the tripod. (you don't want someone opening the overhead storage to have your tripod fall on to injure the passengers below).

I've never had a problem with a tripod as hand luggage or checked in, and that includes flying in and out of the States. I've also never had my hand luggage weighed either, which is just as well because it tends to weigh much more than the 7gk limit. Either way you should be fine.

One tip

With or without the tripod avoid Etihad Airways , they just made me travel 1000 km for nothing , didn't sent my documents on time , I didn't get my visa approved
they wanted to make me pay about half of the ticket price more  to cancel the flight for a day or two , and they don't want to refund my money.

Their employment didn't know whats a .pdf file , even when they use them daily for their application forms , doesnt know what a attachment is ,  ( they lost 2 days in the process because of that ) ,we  had millions of stupid problems , and my two friends got their visas approved even they we sent all the documents together as group.

Imagine my surprise in  my  phone conversation with their employee who was working on our visas for more than 20 days , ( they claim they need 14 days)  when I find out she did not know that Dubai is U.A.E. as well as Abu Dhabi.

So they were apparently mad at me for canceling my flight they planned for me 2 days after the flight I payed, that was today , cause they need two more days for my visa approval.

Those people are not normal , and told me to forget about the money they took  for the flight and for visa expenses.

Great vacations I had  ;)

Sorry about your "trip". Still it could have been worse... at least you didn't have to spend 4 years in a Dubai jail...

Ah sorry, I forgot to mention, I took Etihad for the first time last month. What a mess. They objected I had no visa for the Philippines in Brussels but I just buy the Visa on arrivals and that works fine and cheaper. No use explaining them that on my previous 11 flights or so with Gulf, I had no problem at all with visa. They made me lose two hours at the airport and I lost the time to buy a Canon D5-II or an HD video tax-free. Never Etihad again. I bet they are running an undercover action giving kickbacks to travel agents, since my usual travel agent pushed them through my throat.
