ok, I'll be the first responder.
a canon 10D (6.4 mp)
Hopefully I can upgrade to a 5d before TOO long, but the photographer earnings have been pegged for a few other things first.

My main camera is a 20D (8mp) which I got last November. I also have an ixus 55 (5mp) p&s which replaced my ixus 500 (5mp) p&s which suffered from a cracked screen.
Currently lens for 20D are:
17-85 is
70-300 is
50mm

My 'main' camera for micro stock and portraits etc is a 20D. My 'second' body is a 10D. I've also got a 1D (original 4mp one, not a MkII) which I use for sports because the focus system is soooo much better for moving subjects.
Currently saving my pennies for a 1DMkIIN..

You'll be buying the 24-70 first wont you? :-) That 28-135 IS will be not so hot on the 5D's FF sensor wide open. (as per your review comments.) Or did you already get the 24-70?
I got the 20D, then spent up on lenses... When I'd paid the finance on the lenses I got the 10D and 1D bodies second hand. I think I did things in the right order for the type of work I do. Having the good glass significantly reduces post processing/editing time, and that is very important for the paper/sports stuff that pays for my 'toy' budget.
On a slightly different topic..
The biggest thing with good lenses is the improvement in out-of-the-camera image quality. Contrast, colours and sharpness are all there. If you're shooting for yourself or hobby purposes it dosn't really matter, you can spend 10-20 minutes per photo editing and touching up... I'm doing three events this weekend for the paper, and expect to shoot 600+ photos. I have to get 20-30 of them to the paper by 8am Monday, so they can pick maybe 6 to print. If I miss the deadline, I don't get paid. Simple.
This is also true if you're serious about micro stock / stock... There's no doubting that a large portfolio is the way to go. If you have to spend 20-30 minutes per photo and you want 2000 photos online...
Well you do the math. But if your images only very slight editing you're going to get there a lot quicker, and your 'cost' price of yoru images will be much lower, getting into real profit quicker.
The camera body is slightly academic. Pick the manufacturer you like, and then save, srimp, steal, beg so you can put good glass on the front! (Unless you're shooting sports for money, get a 1D or d2x and just put up with the finance costs!)

I just got Canon 5D
Wow the 5D, so whats your impression from it? I've got the D60, quite a bit old, but it has the same sensor as the 10D, so I guess there is not much difference in quality. However a 5D, that really sounds great. That would be one I would like to have, but I cannot afford it. But as mentioned before, the lenses are so important. I just discover that with my Tamron 28-300 lens. Great range, but not the quality I wish it would have..

So far I only had a chance to shoot for one day. My first imression is WOW. I absolutely love it. My RAW files look so much nicer than out of 20D which I sold. I sold 20D and 10D to get the 5D. I am very impressed. I like the full frame. I am very happy. I also got a new lens. The 24-105mm. I like it too. I solfd my 24-70mm to get the 24-105mm. I just had to get a lighter lens. I travel a lot and the 24-70 was just too bulky. I will shoot more this weekend.

I use a 5D but also recently bought a 350D for my wife thatI will use for backup if need be.
I'm very happy with both and don't think I will change either for a while...

Yeah I have the 24-70 now. I am not sure how long I will be able to keep it, but hopefully for ever. I definatly agree that glass is more important than a new camera.. it makes such a big differance, as the comparison shows. I was actually surprised how much better it was or how easy it is to see the differance.

Yeah I have the 24-70 now. I am not sure how long I will be able to keep it, but hopefully for ever. You mean you've borrowed it, or you're going broke paying for it? :-). I've done both...
I borrowed one, and then couldn't do without it, it made a huge difference to the out of the camera quality of my shots. I had a sigma 28-70/2.8 EX before that in the mid-range, which was good, but in difficult light the Canon is like night and day...
Now I'm going broke paying off the finance on it. :-). I lasted about two weeks after returning the borrowed one before getting one on HP.

I bought it on a good deal with a few other camera things on an ebay auction. The plan was to sell all of it again, andif finances get tight I will, but if I can make enough from photography to warrent 'buying' from myself i will.

A little late jumping into the fray. I have a 20d and a 1ds. Use them both, more the 1ds now that I bought it. Lenses many, but mostly now all L. I think that the difference is worth the $$.

I have a 10D and 30D. I was really considering the 5D but finances being what they were I picked up the 30D instead. I've been toying with the idea of having the 10D converted to IR only.

I shoot with a Nikon D2X and will maybe upgrade to a D2Xs. Otherwise wil just wait until the D3X come out and hopefully it will be around 20mp full frame.

Not to worry leaf, I'm still stuck with a 10D also. I would like to get the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 lens personally. With a 2x lens and the 1.6 multiplying effect it would be a 384-960mm lens. The 20D and 30D just isn't enough of an upgrade. I'm waiting for the 40D or what ever it will be.

There's nothing wrong with the 10D....
Use a D30, D60 or 300D for a day and you'll never complain again. :-). The only thing I dislike about my 10D is the occasional very contrasty image it spits out compared to the 20D (due to lower dynamic range???) for most things the speed difference is not an issue, and it works like a camera should. I supose the focus system isn't as good as the 20D either, but for non-sports stuff it dosn't let me down.

I am currently using two 10D's, and they have served me well... just itchen for an upgrade, when i see the fancy new cam's roll off the canon mill.

Yes I've done the ruler test and it always turns out spot on. The 10D just isn't consistant enough. From what I hear the 20D/30D focusing system is only marginally better. My second grip is the resposiveness of the camera. But I have gotten a lot of excellant shots and I'm pleased with the image quality and have no regrets buying the camera. I think the 40D will be released in May-July of next year. And I'm positive it will be a major update unlike the changes from the 20D to the 30D. Besides they just announced the new Digic III processing chip so they suggests it will be even faster.

I was interested in reading this. I have the 20D and have had many shots with very soft focus. A lot of this is user error and my learning curve, but for many, there is no excuse using AF. Thinking about reverting to my old AE1 program days and going manual focus.

Anybody here using Canon 350D??? ??? Can't blame myself.... I like you cameras but this is the only model I can afford. I could push for a 5D but I'm pretty certain my wife would throw me out once the credit card bill arrives. ;D
So I guess for now, I'll just drool over your cameras.... :o

I don't normally use one, but I have one sitting here at the mo, which belongs to a friend..
Personally I don't like the feel of the thing, it's a bit light and small for my liking (big hands), and the lack of quick control dial is annoying at first although if you've not use a Canon with the back dial you'd not notice it missing...
Having said that, it's a * fine tool for for the money. I've been doing some studio portrait work today, and used it for some shots wih the 24-70/2.8 on it, and a couple with the 50/1.8 and the images are great. As with the other Canon dSLR's noise is not an issue at ISO100, and for non-moving subjects it seems to focus quickly and accurately, although not as quickly as the 20D using the same lenses (Odd, but that's what I've observed).
The jpeg images (wasn't shooting raw) are very similar in tonal range and colour to the 20D, although I think the sharpening (set to 0) is more agressive than the 20.
For stock work the 350D is a great little camera. Save your pennies for some good lenses, they will make far more difference to your images than the camera body every could. Forget about the 5D for microstock unless you're doing very well out of it, or you need it for other more demanding work...

It's not just you. Canons are EXCELLENT cameras, but are known for soft focusing. I'm actually still using the 350, just never bothered upgrading. Find that 8mp serve most of my needs (except in the recent commission when I ended up needing to produce 9000 pixel vertical image (3500 is JUST a bit short). The art's in the lenses. Canon makes great ones. Now that there are Leica /R to Canon EF adapters, I'm drooling over the Noctilux

Thanks chellyar. Makes me feel a whole lot better that I made a good choice for buying a camera within my budget range. At least I know that I didn't sacrifice much for the price. I used to own the point and click types of canon (sd550 and g5). This is my first dSLR so I dont have much preference yet except on what I have read on forums. So far, this is the heaviest camera I've held which actually required me to bring along a bag for the lenses. Yet, I'm very much enjoying the use of it. I'm still a new hobbyist in photography and also new in microstock. It comforts me to see professionals like kacper still uses the 350D. I've even seen others use 300D. I guess the only thing I can't buy is talent... hope I develop one... :D

I am also using a 350d and am very happy with it. i coupled it up with a new Tameron 17-50 2.8 lens and have a fine setup for stock photo stuff. Just got started back into photography so this camera fits the bill. Also new to this forum and microstock itself.

the top of my pile of working cams.... which are ALL Canon...
5D Mk II..... and I LOVE it!!!
we have 6 Canons in the stable. My personal back-up, which I still rave about is an original Rebel. The only reason I went up to the 5D was for possible macro submission and with that large an image you have more to play with in post production...and still wind up with a massive file.
For those looking into publishing (books/magazines)... it is of interest to note that publishers have even accepted low MP quality images from our Canon Point and Shoots and have blown them up full page with quality results.
that is why to this day, I am baffled why micros wont take (generally) anything smaller than 6MP. I've had 2 point somethings printed full page in magazines and looked absolutely fantastic. 8)=tom
oh, one more feature I love about the 5D Mark, the ability to fuel the thing with double A batteries..... lost count of the times THAT has saved my bacon. LOL

For now still with my Konica Minolta dynax/maxxum 5D but hopefully after the vacation a brand new

Since this has been resurrected after 3 years, I wonder how many changes of equipment previous repliers had. I didn't reply to the thread, but back then I didn't have a DSLR (purchased in 2007), my film SLR was still working (stopped in October 2006), I didn't have the Powershot A620 I still use so much (purchased in September 2006) and I was using basically a 4MPix Powershot A520 for microstock.

at the time of original thread I would have using the pentax ist ds, since then I have had the pentax k100d, k10d & k20d.
For the last 2-3 months I have had the sony a900 which unfortunately I've barely had the chance to use (but only another a week or so and I will back to shooting :))

I'll let you know :) not sure what you are using now, I came from pentax, mostly to get the cz zooms which I'll have the 24-70 and 70-400 in a couple of weeks and 16-35 before end of year (I'm a zoom type person). Certainly lots of little differences from pentax system, some are good, some things I'll miss :)
dyxum.com is the place for info on sony stuff. one of the sony sites, leaked a a850 manual which appears to the be the a900 with 3fps (rather than 5) and a few other small differences (I havent taken a lot of notice), but the rumor mill is saying anywhere up to $1000 cheaper, I'd expect the press release very soon. Depending on your needs and budget it may be worth looking into. They also just announced new sensor technology and apparently will have new dslrs out that use before end of year, again I havent looked much, but I think at this stage it is mid range apsc, basically there is a lot happening :)

Thanks Phil, I probably won't be upgrading until the new year, so I can hang on for all the latest stuff. Using a Nikon D80 at the moment and I shoot mostly still life and land/seascapes.

Nikon D700 as main, D300 as backup.
Also a Canon G9 but 99,99% of the time taking dust in the cabinet, I tough was nice to have a quality P&S but really the images produced are NOT up to my personal IQ standards.
Mainstream lenses for 2009 shooting sessions are:
Nikkor 14-24 2.8
Nikkor 28-70 2.8
Nikkor 70-200 2.8
Nikkor 50 1.4 G
Nikkor 60 1.4 G
Nikkor Micro 105 2.8 G
That pretty much what I use today. Tomorrow nobody knows...

I used to use the Olympus E500 and E510, but now I use mostly the Sony A700 with the A350 for backup. I also use the Canon G9 on occassion.

Hah, that was long ago :D now I have a 5d Mk II with L lenses, such a difference ;D I Would feel handicapped with a D60 and the old slow and soft tamron ::)

Canon T1i and I love it! I use Canon Image stabilized "L" lenses only.

Note: On the new Canon T1i the noise level at ISO 100 and 200 is the same as the Canon DII Wow!!
But I will still buy the DII when the prices drop a little.

it's been a long time coming :) (and I grabbed it 2nd hand :)) a lot of saving up as gear slowly got replaced. it used to be 50% of stock went to gear, last year it was 33%, this year it will be 20%. But that will give me almost everything gear wise that I want (cam, lenses, lights etc etc) and so future will less, but then more for props, models etc :)
I always told myself that gear doesnt matter, but was always looking :), now I have got to the point where I really dont care what comes out :)

How much of an improvement in image quality have you noticed? I appreciate that better glass is required to fully show of the FF advantage and that pixel density has it's part to play, but on the whole, has upgrading to FF been worth it?

On the contrary, you need better glass where you have big density of megapixels. Such as for 50D or 500D. The cheap glass performs better on FF ;)
As for improvement in image quality, there is no contest.

As long as I have been in photography, the greatest masters and those who taught me were spending more time making photographs instead of checking up on keeping up with the joneses of next years top of the line. In fact, most of these masters and working photographers I know kept one favourite old workhorse and run them until it falls off literally before they junk it or repair it. Seldom did I see them go for the latest with the bells and whistles. They don't need the status of being seen with one.
Many times I , being the ocassional saleperson, would mouth off the specs of their cameras and compare them to the super duper new ones, only to have these masters look at me saying nonchalantly, "Is that so, how interesting!"
and moving on to other more important subject. lol. I know where they're coming from, and sense they have a different perception of priority.
On the other hand, working part-time as a pro photo salesman, I do suggest the next years model to certain kinds . Even if I personally feel it's as you said, not going to make them better photographers,
I still sell them what THEY WANT. Or else they will go elsewhere or find another salesman who will agree with them to sell them the top of the line and next years model.
Trade in after trade in after trade in. Oh well, I make the commission each time they do,
and they feel good, everytime they walk into the store feeling like a pro.
You get two types of photographers. It all depends on the perception.

Recently dumped a Nikon D300 and some lenses for a 5D MarkII. Image quality is amazing.
So far I have:

Kind of hard to stay because I jumped from Nikon APS-C to Canon FF.
But, in general, I'd say there's a very noticeable difference. The D300 produced good detail but the 5D detail is really impressive. And I don't mean just 12MP vs 21MP but pixel detail. There's something funky going on with the D300 sensor I couldn't quite figure out. With the D300 I spent a lot of time with post processing fixing technical issues. The 5D doesn't have those issues. I'm not sure if that's a difference between Canon and Nikon or APS-C and FF.

nikon d50, but in a few months hopefully upgrading to a nikon d300 or canon 5d mark1. trying to figure out if there's a real difference between those at iso 100 and at iso 1600 on both machines.

I think it took almost three years and sony to release some competition for them bring out the 5d mk ii, I wouldn't hold my breath :)
