DPReview has just released their 33 page review on the new 1D mark IV
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos1dmarkIV/

Very nice.

As much as I like the 1D series camera I am pretty sure I wouldn't ever buy one for stock.  They seem quite sports oriented.  I AM however looking forward to the 1Ds mark IV if for no other reason than to see what will be included on a future 5D model.

Is anyone shooting with the 1D series bodies?  1Ds or 1D?  I have thought sometimes that it might be nice with a bit better focusing, but really is it worth it over the 5D?  I know Andres said last spring at UGCX that he sold his 1Ds bodies and bought 5D's

I used to have both a 1D and 1Ds (both MkII), but sold the 1D shortly after starting my stock career - I just didn't have the need for it. The 1Ds is a great camera to have when you just can't afford to miss the shot, but those situations rarely arise when shooting stock. I'll probably ditch mine when the next 5D body comes out.

I used to have a lot of lenses, too. Now I have just three: 24-70mm, 70-200mm, and 15mm fisheye.

I am shooting with the 1Dsmk3 since 2 years now and I used the 5dmk1 before but I never tried the 5dmk2. The 1Dsmk3 is a fine camera, images can be extremely sharp with it but at the same time the AF system is terribly inaccurate. And it costs 2 times more than the 5dmk2 - it simply doesn't worth it.

And one more thing, You buy an 1ds series body and a few month later Canon will release a better camera for less money. Not again! Because of that particular move of Canon I am affraid this current one will be my last canon body.

I could agree with the extra cost statement of the 1D series bodies but not the release dates complaint.  The 100 series bodies do get released pretty often, but if you are buying a 1D series body (or 5D even) new bodies only come out every 2-3 years on a pretty predictable time line.  If it is a few months before the next one is to be released - it isn't too hard to wait.

Apparently it works great for low light conditions and very fast. Professional journalists love it.

I did last August, on a local photographer's jamboree. I wasn't happy at all about the focusing and it is very heavy. When I got my own 5DII later, my images were much sharper. But I didn't use a monopod with the 1D, and I didn't have time to really play with it.

I jumped from a 1Ds to the 5Dii. No love lost. So much lighter for walking around. I can ski with a 5D but not the 1D.

Leaf, it is not about the release dates. When I bought my 1ds I knew I am done for the next 2-3 years and this is still the case.
What I am complaining about is the feature set of the 5dmk2. If you are not a journalist (especially not a sport photographer) the 5dmk2 is overperforming the 1dsmk3. They cheated the pro world. They sold their professional line camera to everyone and then they released a better prosumer camera for a half price. In my case it was a year after I bought the 1ds.
When you pay for the high-end camera of a manufacturer you pay for two factors: for the features you really need and for the marked advantage you'll get with the top equipment. This is where I feel myself sacked. I know it is great for many people but this time I lost a lot of money on that so I'll not forget it for Canon next time when I buy a body. I'll not pay any extra for them for the second factor.

I agree, a while back I had a friend shooting with the first 5D and I had my 1Ds and his images were of a much higher technical quality than mine. My 1Ds was very tough but I am not that hard on cameras so couldn't see that as an advantage. There are many features on the 1D's that out perform the 5D's but given a 3x difference in price it's hard to justify them.

For me, it's a perfect camera as my primary source of income in the photography world has been weddings.  I also was shooting some sporting events and have a big focus on wildlife.  All of those subjects require speed.
...
If I were to buy a camera specifically for stock it would be the 5D Mark II.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
+1
The 1D I borrowed was with the famous 50mm prime of Canon and the guy shot weddings, events, concerts in available light (not for stock) and he had a leading edge on people with lesser cams. I prefer my 5DII for well lit stock in optimal conditions and I wouldn't dream to walk around with a heavy 1D in those circumstances. For every task the proper tool. (I could also add I can't afford the 1D with the 50mm).
