DPReview just put out a press release from Canon with an announcement that they have just created a 120 mp sensor. It says it won't be put in a camera but gives proof that the pixel density in the 1D series cameras should be going up. A few years ago their record was a 50mp sensor

I would never have any practical use for a 120mp sensor (in 24*36mm size). A bigger sensor with that resolution would be excellent!
Even with my 5DmkII I see imperfections of the lenses, only with quality primes stopped down to 5.6...11 would there be any benefit of a higher pixel count than the current 21mpix.
Sure you will get better textures and remove some artifacts caused by bayer interpolation, but I think something around 60mpix would get rid of even that...

at RGB 8bit depth, it's 360 MB uncompressed each picture! or even more if an higher bitdepth is used
now the problem is saving/reading/transferring data at a reasonable rate;
most LANs are still only 100 Mbit/s - slowly moving towards 1 Gbit/s - and solid memories are even slower;
Consumer grade hard disks/CDs/DVDs/BlueRay are slow as well;
it's not impossible but still too dear for most users to use practically
nice though that they are experimenting

120 MP on an APS-H-sensor :D Which kind of PC do you need and which memory card. You need a backpack with a server in it.
No thanks, i like my Nikon D3X and it's enough for me, my pc and my mac ;)

Back to the reality - there is NO Canon lens even close to such resolution. In fact most of Canon lenses (remember most are low end or prosumer) have trouble even with 7D. Other thing is that there is simply no use for it - A3/300dpi is "only" 16Mpix and there is in 99% cases no need for 300dpi beyond A3. At least I do not pixelpeep billboards...

I wonder if one day they will get rid of zoom lenses? With a 120mp sensor, a digital zoom should work. Can't think of many other uses for so many mp's. Not sure they would want to lose their zoom lens sales though.

While it is true that such high resolution is not needed for general photography, there are at least two areas I can think of where this technology could be applied.
Astronomy and military satellite imaging.

Canon officials also mentioned that it isn't meant for home users, they especially mentioned usage in medicine.
