Sorry I was asking Holgs if he was interested in switching (he's an Olympus guy now), but you shouldn't need to great of a computer to handle the video.  I have a 5D mark II and am using my laptop to edit (basic editing only) while traveling, when I get home next year I'll get a new pc to try my hand at more in depth editing.  I love the video so far it's much better than my HV30, I just need some sales to justify it.  The video also looks great at higher ISO which I would assume is pretty similar on the 7D.

Oh, right, now I get it  :D

Yes, I've heard great things about the 5D mkII's video  8)

I reckon I'll give it (video) a more serious shot once I'm comfortable with the 7D as a still camera. Hmmm... I wonder what type of video sells  ;D

Cheers,
PTLee

Just gotta give it a try to find out I guess.

Nice shot ptlee - looks very clean. Care to share your thoughts about the camera so far?

Thinking about switching to canon (I'm guessing for video if you are)?  I got the 5D mark II and the video stuff is fun hopefully it will translate to sales but I think I need a better tripod.

I'm looking at switching in general, so weighing up the options. It will probably be to a 5DII if I do though. Its a bit academic while I'm in Argentina, because decent camera equipment just isn't on sale here, and would be outrageously expensive anyway. While I'm still happy with the Oly IQ overall, one of my lenses needs repair (for a second time) and just I'm not happy with the service I'm getting from them at the moment.

Doesn't olympus have some pro photographer program where they will send you a replacement if you need a lens repaired.  I thought I had seen them advertising something to that effect.  The 5D II is great just go for it, or maybe the 7D I'd like to hear more about the difference in video quality.

For anyone interested, a colleague from Shutterpoint posted a little review about the Canon 7D he purchased, after a couple of weeks using it.  He is a landscape and nature photographer, not microstock.

EOS 7D: Residual Image in Picture

Thank you for using Canon products.

We have confirmed that in certain camera settings and shooting conditions, the phenomenon described below may occur in images captured by the EOS 7D Digital SLR camera.

Canon is currently investigating and analyzing the cause of this phenomenon, and we are planning to release a firmware update to address this issue.

Once the support measures have been established, we will post the relevant information on our Web site.

We offer our most sincere apologies to customers using this product who have been inconvenienced by this issue. Going forward, we will spare no effort in our quality management to make sure our customers can use our products with confidence. We hope our efforts will earn your understanding.

Phenomenon
In images captured by continuous shooting, and under certain conditions, barely noticeable traces of the immediately preceding frame may be visible. This phenomenon is not noticeable in an image with optimal exposure. The phenomenon may become more noticeable if a retouching process such as level compensation is applied to emphasize the image.

I for one am waiting with baited breath for Sony to announce an upgrade to my beloved A700.  I imagine that now with Canon raising the bar for semi-pro APS-C dslr's, I suspect that somewhere between now and Photokina in spring 2010 there will be a similar and very competitively priced Sony offering.

The 5D Mark II is a great camera, but I really feel that the 7D (with the exception of sensor size) is what the 5D Mark II should have been.

I totally agree with the statement above.Having said that   I only wish to have the frame rate adjustments on my beloved  5d m2 all the rest can be missed out, except for dual processor as it must be what enables the camera  to shoot HD video at higher frame rates.

Firmware update reported to be coming for 5D MKII to allow frame rate adjustments.

Oh you already put that in a different thread. Sorry.

I've had Olympus (E-330, C4000) and Nikon (D300, D80, D50) and liked a lot of things about both. But I moved to a 5DMII and I don't foresee going back to the others.

I haven't dealt with Canon service so I can't say how it compares to Olympus.

I'm pretty happy with mine. The features are pretty much what I wanted from a bird photography point of view.

Here's a shot at ISO1600 with some cropping (maybe about 10-20% cropped off). NR done on the background, but not on the bird.

Cheers,
PTLee

wow that is a lovely shot i must say.  ;D

Nice little video. I'm kind of waiting for the 7D MKII so I can buy someones "old" first issue. It has been about three years, so that's about time in the cycle?

looks like a 70-200 f/2.8 and later the 300mm "L". Should be getting good shots, those are two of the most fantastic lenses.

Funny that people mention "wish it was full frame", sure and I wish my Honda was a Ferrari, but I bought the Honda and it works just fine for sports and what I paid.  ;D If I wanted a full frame I would have bought a 5D instead. And actually if there was no 7D I'd be looking at a model old 1D for sports.

People who don't shoot sports all year long, won't need to make that decision, they can go full frame and then wish they had the faster focusing and higher burst rate. One camera doesn't do it all.  ;)

Photokina is Sept. 2012 which  is always a semi-annual show for Mfgs. to introduce something big and new. If it takes until then for the new 1D, 5D and 7D it would be sad, but very possible. Has the new EOS train slowed down? In the past January has been new equipment month.

There's a rumor about a 48MP square camera from Canon. Hey, that's my idea and now they are stealing it? LOL Cool for studio and making shots that don't have alignment, square and let the buyer decide how to frame it? Nice to dream, but I'd never be able to afford one. Oh wait, "if I win the lottery..."

Next camera for me is the G-12 for travel followed by a 7D for everyday use. On the list for backup upgrades, used 1D grab cam and paddock camera.

in my opinion the new 7d and 1Ds will be announced in Sept. 2012 at Photokina,  but the new 5D mk 3 i believe will be available earlier.
