I'm afraid it probably isn't the next 5D.. but I'm always up for a bit of hype and new stuff from Canon...

It'll be that 8-800mm F0.2L IS I've always wanted. RRP $300 and only 500grams

I doubt that it'll be a 5dMIII. From what I understand sales are still going great guns, no need for Canon to release a new one unless sales are slowing or the competition comes up with something really special.

I think people down at the entry level SLR are most likely to change brands as they haven't got as much invested in other hardware such as lenses etc or emotionally in years of brainwashing that Canon or Nikon or whatever is the best.

I'm sure it's a new video camera, why else announce it in Hollywood?  They really need to work on an EVIL camera, I think they will lose a lot of lower range SLR buyers to Panasonic, Olympus, Sony and Samsung.  Perhaps Canon are going to concentrate more on the professional market?  Lots of compacts are going to lose out to smart phones with built in cameras.  They're already losing buyers that are switching to mirror-less cameras in the lower end SLR market.

How about a large-sensor video camera, like a 5D mk II but in video camera shape and with more suitable anti-aliasing filter for video?

Try a search for "Canon 1Ds MkIV rumours". There's plenty of them. I'm actually staggered that Canon's flagship model is now 4 years old. That's almost ancient history with today's technological advances.

The new model, when it is announced, is bound to be something really special after all this time. I was struck by the Big Red's claim to have a dynamic range of 13 (the human eye is apparently only 12) so surely that technology is possible for a DSLR?

Perhaps medium format? Together with a brand new line of lenses with MF image circle?

Could be a Compact Systems Camera, they are bound to want some of that action.....

A Retro compact camera? (Think about Fuji X100)

How about a real 3d consumer video camera...

Sounds interesting, and so does the video camera.

Here's my guess.

25th Anniversary EOS special edition. Simple but drawing attention to Canon?

That would be my guess also, I thought one of their guys announced a while ago that they were looking into this market and then recently they registered a patent for a CSC EF lens mount.

Historic? Maybe a 39MP medium format?

A 5D2 successor aimed at videographers rather than photojournalists? (or maybe even simply a 5D3... that would be historic enough for most here... )

Certainly NOT a medium format camera. My guess is also a camera aimed for film-makers. And I agree they need to come out with an EVIL soon or they will lose significant market-share.

For what it's worth: I went to my Canon dealer (not a small one) in Europe 2-3 weeks ago to buy a good HD dedicated videocam. He told me to forget it since Canon stopped delivering all prosumer videocams since the end of August because "something big" was coming for video. The still cams were still easy to get in the shop.

Hollywoodreporter.com says "Canon revealed that Martin Scorsese will appear at its event, tomorrow on the Paramount lot. It also said it would showcase Canon's commitment to play a larger role in the film and television production community.

There is some speculation in the cinematography community that the announcement would involve a high quality new camera, but Canon isnt talking."

Whatever it is, it's clearly not aimed at stills shooters.

The new range of EF cinema lenses could be interesting... are these going to work on DSLRs?

(ok just found the price of these.... not something many here would be interested in... $6,800 for the primes, $47,000 for the 30-300 zoom... a little out of my budget!)

It seems to be getting pretty heavily bashed on the engaget forum.

Red came out with the scarlet for half the price.  Also the Canon lenses, if they are priced at 6800, are much more than the Zeiss video lenses.

Red totally destroyed Canon today. That C300 only shoots motion, and unlike the red, you can't use any lens you please (Red system has swapable lens mounts). I'm saving up for a Red :)

Just noticed this: http://www.dpreview.com/news/1111/11110308canondslr4k.asp maybe this is actually the most significant thing Canon announced today...
