Hi All,

I took a 4-5 month break from microstock and photography in general.  Would love to get back into it . Preferably with a new cam. So far I am using my good old 20D. I am going on a trip back to Berlin and Bali soon. That would be a good opportunity to get a new cam .. and get some tax back here at the Sydney airport.

Guess it comes down to 50D (or 40D) vs. 5D Mk2.  I hear various things about the 50D being noisy compared with the 40D. True? How is the noise of the 50D compared to the 20D? I would like to get a high MP cam, so I do not really consider the 40D.

My stock income could finance the 5D2 in a few months. However, I am not sure if this cam would be overkill for me?! Also I am used to the 1.6 crop factor.  Usage would be about 70-80% stock, the rest travel and personal stuff.

Any opinions / experiences with a similar choice or these cameras?

Does someone have experience with: http://www.camerastore.com.au
They list the 5D2 for 3,849 A$ (inc GST) and say it has Australian warranty (no grey import) (see their FAQ)

Btw, I have 24-105 F4, 70-300 IS, 90mm Tamron macro  and a couple of accessories (tripod, flash, studio heads).

Just for everyone interested. After I stopped to upload my SS income basically halfed within 1-2 months and then stayed at this level.  All other agencies basically stayed the same or only dropped marginally (<10%).  One of the reasons I stopped uploading was that I questioned the effort/ returns. However, its nice to take a break and still see the money rolling in. However, I think its time to get back into it  ;-)

I have a 20D and a 5D MK1 (not II).

The jump in image quality from the 20D to the 5D is insane.
I can only imagine that the MK II is even more so.

If you can hold out till you have enough $$ for the 5D MKII, I would say, go for it.  8)

Thx for the tips.

So far I did nor really consider the 5D. Basically because it is relatively old and has "only" 12 MP.

Also 40D has a lower MP count, but the 50D reviews have not been as good ... Had a look at the 5D2 in a cam shop today. It is sweet. Almost similar size to 50D. I am tempted ...

The 5D MKII where everybody is talking about, has 22MP, and it is around 6 months "old".

I went from the 20D to the 5D I.  Nosaya is right.  It is an unbelievable jump in quality.

I also own the 40D.  And the 5DII.  The 40D isn't half the camera of either of the 5D models.  It's focus is much less fast and accurate, the dynamic range is more limited, there is considerably more noise.  Basically eveything I want a camera to do is done far better by the 5D's I and II.

If you don't want to spend the cash on a 5DII then get the 5DI.  Remember, it's not just about 12mp.  Those 12mp are large, light gathering photosites on a big full frame sensor.  The image quality is not comparable to anything I have seen with an aps-c sized sensor.

Hi LisaFX,

thanks for tips. Seems you really tried all the models ;-) ok, 5D1 or 5D2. I am very tempted by the 5D2.

Although I am not sure if microstock alone would justify the higher cost for me. Sure, I would get the larger MP and better image quality ... however a 5D1 might comes "close enough"?!

.... on the other hand, it's nice to have the latest technology and "not run behind" ... decisions, decisions ... I already see my self spending the largest amount on a photography related item I ever did ...

Thx guys.

I'm in the same boat.  20D owner here, but what to do?  The 5D would create 12.8 mp images (a lot larger than my 8mp 20D) and would pay for itself just in higher size image sales.  BUT I also don't really want to spend $1000-1200 on a used 5D only to find that in 6 months it's worth half that, now that the mk2 is out.  I might just wait until the price comes down a bit more.  Like everyone said, the quality on the 5D is much better, and you can get away with higher ISOs.  A bit more mp to crop and downsize slightly, compared to the 20D.

If you're going to the 5D mk2 you also need a newer computer to handle the larger file sizes, and a lot of CF and additional hard drive space.  I'm not talking gigs, I'm talking tb's.  Those files are redonkulously large at 22mp.

As long as you have EF lenses, that's not an issue.  I love my 18-55 IS on my 20D, but that will be the new dedicated lens if I got FF.  Then I'll only have the option to go with my 50mm or my 70-200L on the FF body.  My wife has been asking to use my camera a lot more, so maybe I'll put her to work with the 20 and upgrade.  I feel a business expense coming on later this year...

Again, thx for the tips. Just a quick feedback.

I got the 5D II. Charged the battery over night and fired off a few shots. Did not use video yet. Most impressive coming from the 20D are the viewfinder and the display. Very nice. Camera handles very nice too, bit more heavy than 20D. Did not check the files on the computer yet. Will do that tonight.

Just for anyone in Sydney. I bought at http://www.d-d-photographics.com.au/
Its a imported  cam, but DD makes that very clear in their FAQ and they provide their own warranty. But I guess you never know its worth, until you need it Its mainly a internet business, but they have outlets in North Sydney and Brisbane.  Staff was friendly, got a tax invoice with my address and all details and payed by credit card without surcharge. I bought the body only, but got it in the kit box obviously they took the 24-105L out.

So far so good. Will get busy on the weekend enjoying the new toy , aeh tool ;-)))

I upgraded from 20D to 5Dmk2 10 days ago so my experience is also very limited. It's obviously better camera so I need some calibration :-) First of all I figured out that my CPL filter need to be replaced with slim version if I want to use it with 17mm lens :-) Second I got impression that in general photos are more saturated so maybe I have to be very careful with CPL. Viewfinder is brighter, display size feels like 3x bigger, card reader is way faster. Yes, my computer is chocking with huge files so maybe if it's not needed I should use smaller RAW size.

Just bought my 5D II as well, coming form a 30D  ;D . Wow what a difference. When I press the shutter I can feel the difference when the heavy mirror and the shutter moves. The colors are better the depth of field is smaller. I have the feeling it also focuses better. The viewfinder is huge compared to the 30D. You finally can inspect your file for sharpness. The high iso setting with the comparatively low noise is also amazing.  But yes, 25 MB raw file size is a drawback. I need to buy a new hard disc (fortunately they are becoming cheaper and cheaper) and maybe also a few new CF cards. I filled up a 4 GB card with just 120 files.
