Title: CANVA Adds RF
Post by: w7lwi on May 19, 2016, 20:14
Just got the following message from Lee.  35% of $10.00 looks like a winner.  And the possibility of EL's later.

"Hi Russell,
Since Canva launched we’ve only had one type of license available: our unique One Time Use license, which permits users to use an image in a single design.

Our users tell us that they love it. But since day one, they’ve also been asking for a more typical license as well, where they can pay a bit more up front and not have to pay each time they use it.

And now we’re about to launch it.

It’s a standard Royalty Free license, but we’re calling it Multi-Use. It’s priced at $10 and your same 35% royalty rate applies.

Just like the One Time Use license, customers can only use it in their Canva designs, and can’t download the original file.
It has gone live for a small group of users today and assuming there are no issues, we’ll roll it out to all users over the rest of this week. You may start to see some $3.50 royalties appear in your earnings pages from today.

We expect this license will create a substantial boost to your royalty earnings. A little later in the year we’ll also launch our Extended Licenses which we expect will do the same.

If you have any questions about this or anything else, please feel free to reply directly to this newsletter.

As always, thanks for being a Canva contributor!
Cheers,
Lee"

I don't know about any usage limits (number of times it can be used by the buyer) but it looks like a step in the right direction.

Hey, I already got one and I didn't even notice! Nice.  At the most, I've seen the same image sell 3-4 times at once, so ten times the royalty from one buyer sounds pretty ok.

I wish they had called it something other than "RF" though.  Here's chance to get away from that term.

How many uses gets the customer for that 10$?

Nice addition, sounds good.

I assume it's unlimited uses, but with typical print run restrictions per use (250.000).

Exact license terms here:

https://about.canva.com/license-agreements/multi-use/

Doesn't say anything about number of uses, so I assume it's unlimited.

What I don't understand is this:

For example, customer spends 10$, for that money he/she can make (I'm assuming) 10 designs. From that 10$ 35% (3,5$) gets contributor, Canva keeps 6,5$. So does that mean, that a buyer must buy all 10 photos from contributor that got payed 3,5$. And if not, how are other contributors paid from that 10$?

Existing model (one time use license):

A customer makes a design. He can use as many images he wants in his design. For each image he has to pay $1, the respective contributor gets $0,35.
The customer only receives the finished design and can't re-use any of the images in another design.

New model (RF license):

A customer can buy a RF license for a specific image for $10 (contributor receives $3,5). The customer now can use this image in as many designs he wants (and combine it with other images he buys with either the one time use license or another RF license).

In both cases the customer only ever receives the finished designs, never the image file itself, so the images cannot be used outside of Canva.

That's how I understand it.

Ok, that makes sense. Thanks.

I've had some sell far more than ten times so it could be negative if they only have to pay once.  However, so far Canva has been very good about increasing sales and if this gets buyers to pay a little more up front in case they need it later it could be positive long term.  Since the commission rate is the same it is in Canva's best interest to sell more as well so I am very hopeful that this will be positive for contributors.  I also like that they are calling it "multiple use" rather than "royalty free" - that sounds much better.

They are planning to introduce ELs at some time in the future as well which would be another good step.  Go Canva!

I wasn't talking about overall image sales.  I have the same image sell 3-4 times in a row, so it's obviously one buyer.  If they spend 10 times that, instead of three, that's great.

Also, the email was titled "Royalty Free Licenses Are Here", which is what I was talking about.  In the sales column, it says "multi-use", so I hope that's the phrase buyers see.

BTW, I've updated my greasemonkey show thumbnails script to color any "multi-use" cell in the table green.  To make it easier to pick out.

We might be talking about different things.  I am thinking about images used in a composition, where the composition sells many times and they pay for each use.  For those the buyer paying ten bucks at first might be cheaper for them but less for us.

I didn't think about when you have 2-3 sales of the same image in a row - you're probably right that those might be used for the same design.  If buyers pay ten bucks up front for multiple uses that might encourage them to do it - that is probably the target market and in that case it should be a big plus.  Hopefully we will all see an effect soon.

Do you mean the pre-made layouts?  We get paid each time our image is in a layout that is bought.

I hope we carry on getting paid every time our image in a layout is bought, that's working well for me.

So I had a sale today and under the ID of the sold file, there is some new line: ---> via "ID and link to a design with sold photo".

Is thios something new or I just haven't had it before?

Like this:

04. junij 2016    MALEiEvsbUZk
→ via MACC1Hd7XkaI

MACC1Hd7XkaI is ID and link to the design of the customer that bought photo.

Nothing new.  That's the sale of a "template" which is something someone has made that incorporates one or more of your images.  That's one of the nice things about CANVA.  Someone can buy one of your images (and you get paid) and use it in an original composition; then, put that composition up on CANVA as a template for others to buy and use.  Whenever anyone subsequently purchases that template for their use, you get paid again for your image(s).  I had a couple last month that used three of my images for a single template.  That template was then used by others three different times and I received nine commissions for those three template purchases (3x3=9).

Edited to add the image number listed after "via" is not the finished composition, but rather the template that someone made up using your image.  Someone else then purchased that template to make up their own final composition.  Thus MALEiEvsbUZk is your original image and MACC1Hd7XkaI is the template that was made and was purchased by the end user.

Thanks, I just haven't had this before (even though I sold this file in the past) so I thought it's something new.
