So - does anybody know how the 'subs' part of our income is being calculated now? Clearly no longer double March. Seems a random number just....appears....
Did I miss any update?

There was no need to update, they informed us about this in the e-mail about the double earnings (in April):

"we are allocating a percentage of Canvas subscription revenue to a new royalty pool that will be paid to contributors like you every time your content gets used as part of our subscriptions.

What will happen to my earnings?
The current royalty pool is $9.5 million USD on an annualised basis and importantly, it will continue to grow proportionally as Canvas subscription revenue grows. Every time a Canva subscriber uses one of your assets, youll earn a share of the royalty pool, paid to you shortly after the end of each calendar month."

Random history note: This divide the pool method is not new. That's how 123RF paid subscriptions when it first started. At the time, it generated much lower earnings than Shutterstock's per download number, so it wasn't long before 123RF moved to a flat amount per download for subscription royalties.

I can't imagine Canva would be transparent and disclose what portion of their subscription revenue goes into the royalty pool - but that would be the only way to determine if the allocation was fair to the contributor community.

Other than November all the subs have been updated to bring things up to double March. After November they are in the ballpark of what sales were before March in 2020 - except I am guessing that actual sales numbers of subs are now way way more and we get a very small amount out of the pool per sale. I think one month they briefly had the number of subs and the $ amount before they removed it. Sadly I didn't write it down.

$ were pretty good there in 2018, for some reason they were rather lousy in 2019 for me.

Interesting. Going over the numbers, my monthly sales have all been steadily higher than the March 2020 sales, so I suppose I haven't seen any 2X payments the whole time?re their stipulations:

at least double your March 2020 earnings, or your actual earnings for the month; whichever is higher.

When this new plan started, the first month briefly showed many hundreds of downloads in the subscription area. Canva swiftly removed this information, which is very telling.

The only way to know whether we are earning a fair rate is to know the RPD, which they are not prepared to disclose.

$100 subscription earnings is great for maybe 100-300 downloads, but is terrible if it's for say 800-1000+

In this industry, it's pretty clear that we shouldn't trust anyone who is not transparent with their payment structure, or at least be aware that it's a solid indicator that we are being shafted.

It was something around 5-7c per dl if I remember correctly. I also lost a lot of my trust in them when they did that. I was really surprised they just deleted that information rather than trying to make a case based on volume or whatever. A really bad sign given how transparent they were (or seemed to be) up until that point.

As for as the size of the pool we get a cut of, I thought it was 50% of subs income?

EDIT: Just looked through some emails. what, they haven't even told us what percentage they are paying out! I was getting mixed up with another subs offering on another site. This is real bad. We need some clarity here please Canva! That is a really minimal level of transparency for us to ask for.

My RPD was 5c, now it's probably even less.
But they have just less than 4% of my portfolio.

I think everyone's RPD for subs should have been the same because of the way it works. If it is similar to the way other sites do it the pot is divided by total number of dls across the site and we each get a proportion equal to the number of dls we've had. So mine must have been around 5c too.

Surprise ... I just got my January payment, and it's the "double March 2020" amount again.   ?????

Me too, and I've no complaints about being paid more, (unless it suddenly gets reversed from future earnings).

Maybe Canva have decided we actually deserve a bit more than they are paying? After all, the double payment scheme was introduced because they were confident that their new subscription plan would double our money and, to date, there is not much evidence that this is the case for most contributors.

All credit to Canva if this is not an error, and I look forward to the explanatory email.

Good for the people who haven't managed to double their earnings organically since March last year. To be fair they should also be proportionately increasing payouts to everyone, including people providing the most saleable content.

Why not increase percentage payouts for everyone?

Does anyone has negative experience about Canva selling non-licenced images?
They do not communicate.

Canva have relationships with other places including iStock/Getty ... if your work is available through them then Canva have access to them.
Apart from that I have no experience.
