Quote from the Canva e-mailing of 30 November 2023 :

"Starting December 1, 2023, we will be asking you to register with our new payout provider Trolley by March 31, 2024. In order to receive your payouts after Mar 31, 2024, you will be required to both be registered with the new payout provider and to have completed the requisite tax forms. The tax forms are US W-8 (non-US Resident) or W-9 (US Resident) forms, and are needed in order to properly identify you and calculate correct taxes with the US government.
If you have not registered with Trolley and completed the tax forms by Mar 31, 2024 we will be unable to process your payouts. "

So March 31 is approaching, and (I suppose) we all completed the tax forms, but did any one register with Trolley?   I had a look on their website, and there is no such thing as a free registration. You're supposed to go for a paid subscription.
Or did Canva just use the wrong wording in their e-mail and we're not supposed to register on the Trolley website at all ?

I'd never heard of Trolley (or Payment Rails, its former name) before your post, so I was curious. I don't supply Canva, so I have no specific knowledge about their setup. It appears to me, based on this review and looking at Trolley's site, that the fees are for the companies who set up Trolley to be their payment platform for employees or suppliers, not for those receiving money from the platform.

https://www.jibble.io/us-hr-software-reviews/US-payroll/trolley/

There are references to being able to make payments to a bank account or to a debit card, but I couldn't find anything specifically saying that recipients of Trolley payments don't pay fees. There were complaints about onboarding being cumbersome - I think that means adding new payees to the system :)

Assuming there aren't any recipient fees, the reviews seem to say this makes a ton of sense for a company sending out payments worldwide - and in local currencies (no idea if Canva will be using that capability)

That sounds totally reasonable, I mean recipients paying no fees.  But why is Canva telling us to register with Trolley then?  It seems to me that this is not even necessary.
DannyCanva, could you enlighten us on this subject?  Is there any action required by contributors except for filling out the tax forms?

Since December 15, 2023, I have 3 payments that have been made through Trolley, if I believe the lines written  (https://www.canva.com/settings/payments).

I did not create an account at Trolley.
All that I di is adding a Payout Methods for Bank Transfer, and filled out the W-8BEN tax form. (https://www.canva.com/settings/payments/details).
I hope this is ok for future payments.

Yes, I noticed the same thing.  Canva is already using Trolley to pay us, but the announced "changes" are planned after 31st March.  I was also hoping they would stop taking off the taxes as from 1st April, because that complicates my tax form every year, so that's two reasons to pay extra attention to the Canva payment next month.

Any more news on this?  I filled out my tax form which has been reviewed and accepted.  But I've done nothing about registering with trolley.  Do I really have to?

It looked like the last 2 payments from Canva (that went to Paypal) were processed through Trolley, so maybe we don't have to do anything? I looked on the Trolley page and it didn't seem to have anything appropriate to get paid. If it does need to be done by March 31, they sure haven't provided much guidance.

Agreed.  I went to the Trolley web site and couldn't see any way for an individual to register.  I'm going to write to Canva.

I am sure their wording was just a bit inaccurate. You don't actually have to register with Trolley to receive payments. It was just about selecting one of the supported payout methods.

I wrote to Canva about this.  They replied immediately saying that 'there is functionality in your Canva Creator account to register with Trolley'.  Well I've spent hours looking at my account and for the life of me I cannot find any reference to Trolley and certainly no 'functionality to register'.

Anyone had any success with this?

This was right at the beginning of their e-mail:

"To meet these requirements, you will need to complete the following actions, otherwise we may withhold payments:
- You are required to re-register your payout methods
- You are required to submit tax forms applicable to you"

I think that's all that has to be done. Complete the tax form and select a payment method (https://www.canva.com/settings/payments/details). It's pretty clear. Maybe they should just not have used the word "register".

Did all that, and payments have been processed by Trolley for months now ...

Well, I just started to think you're right about that, but today I noticed a big pink bar at the top of my Canva page :

Important reminder: The deadline for registration with our new payment provider Trolley is March 31, 2024.  If you do not register with Trolley and complete the tax forms by this time, we will be unable to process your next payouts until you do so.  Your payments will be held until the next payment whilst you complete this action.

Yeah, the bar has been there for a couple of days. I think it's visible for everyone regardless of whether you updated your information or not.

There's nothing you can do except the steps mentioned above. There's definitely no way (and no need) to create some kind of account on Trolley to receive payments. I have been payed through Trolley since December, so everything seems to work.

I agree with you Chris. That's how I interpreted Canva's letter as well, the payment method must be updated and the tax form must be filled out. I updated the payment method in December as requested. Since then, I too have been receiving payments via Trolley.

Today I received this reply from Canva:

"Hello there,

Thanks for writing back to us.

Apologies for the confusion, signing up with Trolley simply means updating your payment details.

If you have submitted your tax form,  you're good to go.

I hope this clears it up! Let us know if you need further assistance.

Cheers,
Alex"

Clearly the instruction to 'register with Trolley' is completely misleading.
