Title: advice on new laptop
Post by: qwerty on September 13, 2009, 05:07
My laptop looks like its died.
I'm after something with a large screen and fastish speed. More of a desktop replacement type of computer. budget is <$1800 US. Processing photos from 5d Mkii and would like to get more into using the video on the 5dMkII as well.
Any suggestions.

Thanks

You didn't say where you live or what type of O/S you want, so we will have to assume a few things...

For $1800 you can get any laptop you want (assuming you are talking about a Windows laptop).

You could even spend half of that and get a superb 17" laptop, and then use the leftover to get some accessories (a large external LCD monitor, wireless mouse and keyboard, etc).

For example, here is a 17" HP laptop that starts at $800:

FYI, if you are looking for a fast processor, then get an Intel.  The current generation of AMDs aren't as fast as the Intels.

Yeah I like  HP Pavilion dv7  worth every euro I spend on it.
If only I could rid of the vista I have on it......(I wait for window 7 to install on this machine)

Laptop is not for editing maybe only for transfering pics and movies to them and looking on histograms or sharpenings on it. But to be only machine for all purpose I really doubt...

Laptop LCD is not very good (as Suljo mentioned),  i have HP Pavilion dv9000.
You have to have an external LCD Monitor and good video card on your laptop.
I have a laptop with a Samsung "SyncMaster 244T" which I am very pleased with.
You can't judge images by looking at laptop LCD
For $1800 you can buy both  ;)
