I know that most of you use Adobe Photoshop, but for those of you that can't afford it or just find it too difficult to work with, there is a new version of Corel Paint Shop Pro.

Two of the new features that caught my eye are:

- Watermarks

- HDR (high dynamic range)

You can check it out here:

I've used PaintShop for several years.  It is dirt cheap, but it upgrades every 9 months or so.  When it was owned by JASC they packaged a fantastic user manual but FYI the Corel user manual is virtually useless.

I have been making a real effort to learn PhotoShop this year, but I know Corel's so thoroughly that PhotoShop is a major frustration.  I can definitley see the benefits of Photoshop though.

The express lab would be a huge time saver for events... you can crop photos, boost brightness etc. without opening and saving...

Watermarking would be fabulous.  I batch them through Ifran View right now, but I don't have a lot of control over placement without a lot of fiddling there.

I find that Corel often boasts about the new best feature, but they are quite often disappointing (i.e X's colour changer).

Next to Capture NX, PaintShop is the most unstable program that I run.  X isn't nearly as bad as past versions.  I hope this one is an improvement on that.

It's nice to see that with the Canadian $ so strong, this product is the same price on the Canadian site as it is on the U.S. site.  Usually our prices are bumped up quite a bit here - but then Corel is Canadian, and companies have been getting a lot of bad press that prices of imported goods are not dropping with the $.

I swore I wouldn't upgrade again, but I think i will give it another go.

I have also used Paint Shop Pro for years and years and just recently purchased PhotoShop.  I never had stability problems with PSP.  The major problem that I had was that the newest version (version X) was dirt slow.  When I installed PS, I couldn't believe how much faster it was.

I am also struggling through the learning curve for PS, but find it very powerful.  There are still a few things that PSP does that I can't seem to be able to do with PS, so I will probably upgrade as well.

To be fair on the unstable comment... I work on some pretty large files - 60, 80 mg - most of my unstability is with these large files, or with a file that has 20 layers.  I'm in the habit of save save save (wait wait wait).

I use PSP7 at home, and after so many years I feel so comfortable to use it.  We have PSP X at work (Ithink it was the first Corel version) and I must say I wasn't happy with the upgrade.  I found the program a bit clumsy, couldn't find many things, although it offers more tools. I guess it's supposed to look more like PS, but I'm not sure.  Most of PS tricks I learn (like in RJMiz's tutorials) I was able to reproduce in PSP7 and I believe all can be done in PSP X.

Regards,
Adelaide

For those of you thinking about purchasing PSP X2, there is an online coupon code for 40% off available through the end of September.

Just go to www.corel.com and enter UG40OFFSEP into the coupon code.

The upgrade will cost between $36 (download) and $43 (boxed and
shipped) depending on whether you want a boxed product shipped to you
or not.

You can also order to the full product for a reduced price as well.

FYI: I just ordered the upgrade as a download.  The download file is 328 MB!  Good thing I have a fast Internet connection.
